I think our areas of need are pretty clearly ranked

1. KPD
2. Small/medium defender
3. KPF

KPD should be self explanatory. Look at the teams that have been in the mix over the last few years and they're full of talent down back. May, Stewart, Lever, Andrews, Moore, Taylor, Weitering.

Rampe has punched above his weight for years but we can't expect him to take the key forward for the next couple of years and I wouldn't expect him to play more than 15-16 games per year. McCartin has had some massive games on keys, but isn't as consistent as you'd like and whilst Melican's form has been a nice surprise, is it going to continue? Beyond that, the cupboard is bare. Francis and Hamling are ideally depth only. It's no wonder that was a focus last trade period and has to be again.

In terms of smalls, Lloyd has never been lockdown and Harry has lost a step. Campbell isn't a defender and Florent does his best work rebounding. There will never be another Nick Smith but we need someone in that mould.

Up forward is where it gets interesting. Logan's trajectory is looking fantastic but he's not a stay at home forward. McLean is a reasonable number two but has his limitations. Ultimately, it's a make or break year for Amartey. He has all the tools. He's quick, can leap with the best of them, and after putting on some bulk this year he's dominating packs. If he'd stuck a few more marks and kicked truly on a few occasions, he'd be one of the highlights of the season.

We're stacked in the mids and our small/medium forward and wings are looking strong too.

Agree with most of that. Defence needs to be stronger and we need another KPF. McLean & McDonald will be good for us but we need another and its not going to be Amartey he goes missing way too often for my liking.

We need another tall and we need another small down back minimum.

Anything out of the club about making another approach for Barrass?

Would you take the midget from the brave dogs , seems to be out of favour

I don't think there was ever any serious consideration from Barrass. Probably just using us as leverage to get a better deal from you guys.

We desperately needed another key defender so I think if he had any interest at all we would have made it happen.

He was already signed until 2027 so wouldn’t have been for leverage. Has a sister in Sydney and we are shit. Young family here though so probably a bit to consider.

If we don't sign Hayward and Heeney goes to the midfield for the majority of the game say 80%, then what is our forward mix next year? That is our medium forwards either gone or used elsewhere.
Is it 3 talls and 3 smalls and resting mids like Adams and Parker and Heeney?
Maybe they think Major will come on?

Maybe, though Magor is still not being used in the forward line, at least based on the practice games and first two rounds of the VFL.

It is possible they think Parker will see out his final couple of seasons playing as a medium forward, in the same way Jude Bolton did (very successfully). Though I doubt Parker will have the legs to do the hard running expected of half-forwards, and that done by Hayward now. So he'd be more of a stay-at-home medium forward.

I also think they probably expect Hayward to stay. I suspect he wants to, so long as the financial terms aren't too far apart.

Personally there aren't too many massive holes, the one thing I feel we do lack is a genuine wing accumulator, I love Jmac and for that matter Campbell but we do last a Josh Daicos type for instance, yes Gulden is one but he can't play everywhere. I'm actually fairly confident on the keys going forward, our defenders are fine with Edwards in reserve too.

How is the big forward we got in a year ago from WA going? I thought he started well here. Even got a senior game last year was it?

Buller showed a bit in reserves last year, definitely got something to work with. Reasonably mobile for his size, capable of dominating. His arrival helped significantly with structure and brought others into the game more too (small forwards didn't have to see the ball rebound straight out of F50 as much).

Has missed recent games due to injury/illness. Unsure if he played in the practice match at the weekend, but hoping he carries on with some good form when VFL resumes for us next week.
