31MAY24: Swans Daily Media

Brilliant article by the ABC
Just came here to post it and you beat me. One of the best AFL articles I have read!

Some interesting points:
  • Blakey having a stellar year defensively and offensively
  • Lloyd playing on way more than previous years (interesting this has coincided with much less criticism of Lloyd on this board, his change of role may also help)
  • Swans best at scoring from intercepts and defending intercepts. I think this is our success in a nut shell.
  • Swans not great at 1:1 defence but we limit these occurrences almost more than any other team through team defence
  • Swans best defensive second half team, especially when looked at overall second half scoring percentage

The point about Blakey is precisely my point from the other day that this fixation on Chad/Gulden/Heeney ignores Blakey's influence.

Anyone got a video or link to the Heeney Colgate ad? Wanna share it with someone overseas who's a big Heeney fan. 😅

My wife is obsessed with both Heeney and Petracca (in fact she also loves Jamie Elliott so has accepted she might have a thing for the league's #5s..) so was frothing at that ad haha.

“You look at their ball use, particularly off half back and through the midfield. My eyes say they’d have five of the best 20 kicks in the competition all playing in the same team, hence why their ball use is exceptional.”

I think we know who four of the five are - Errol, Blakey, Chad, Isaac. Anyone like to hazard a guess who Dal Santo has added to that group to get five? Florent? JMac?

JMac surely.

JMac surely.
I don't think I can sufficiently differentiate McInerney's and Florent's kicking prowess to place one in the top 20 kicks in the comp and the other not. McInerney is good at finding inside 50 targets, but he more often finds himself with a little time due to playing further up the ground. Florent is typically under pressure and/or weaving through traffic.

Without sitting and making my list of the best kicks in the competition, I'm not sure where I'd put either of them. Significantly above average, but some way short of our "Big Four" because they don't often pull off kicks that make me ask "how the >>>> did he see/do that?"

Campbell has the raw attributes to elevate himself into the top echelon but hasn't yet found a way to actually achieve that on field.

He doesn't always get a lot of chances to use it but I'd almost rate Logan as our next best field kick after those 4.

Love that they highlight the work done by our lesser known players like McInerney, Lloyd etc and how their constant running back to help the defence allows our midfield stars license to attack and score.

Agree with all those who've posted/commented on the ABC stat analysis. Brilliant. It doesn't preclude what pundits have said about eg, our turnover game or the exceptional role of our mids in scores and scoring chains, but focuses on some other stats like score launches and how we're massive on defensive spoils rather than intercept marks.

JJ looked taller as well
Yes, initial thoughts on JJ ‘potentially’ going to Stewart were he wasn’t tall enough, but he’s probably only 2 cms shorter. I’ve also noticed he’s a lot stronger and faster than what I remember of him from the Dees. Later on he could be more prominent in our midfield too.
Him and Brodie are really turning out to be the recruits of the year!! 😍
