I dont think so. The beauty of the NBA/NFL is that inequality in the conferences is only by luck not design.

The problem with the VFL is that 56% of the teams are all in the same city. The VFL is prejudiced against non VIC teams by its nature. The NBA / NFL are set up much better.

Maybe we need a thread about that. Some posters seem to be able to project vicbias onto every damn thing. Media is catching on

From what I can see quickest way to correct this would be to play finals (or at least the first week) over two legs
But I don’t know how two leg rounds sit wit AFL culture
Historically finals are meant to be at neutral venues

These aren't mutually exclusive, but they are a double whammy.

An interstate team can overcome an inequitable draw and still finish above a Melbourne team on the ladder and STILL be forced to play the most important game of the season on the lower ranked teams

Hawks won on at the MCG. The Swans lost on their home deck. Hawks won in the Grand Final at the MCG. That would suggest to me that home field is rather important.

Got over their MCG slump last week. The last 5 minutes of that game from Brisbane was some of the best footy I’ve seen in a long time.

What a story it will be. Lost the first 3 games, finished 5th, 44 points down in the semi, then come from behind against Cats at home. Honestly, they deserve it, too.

Swans terrible form back half of the season and I’m not sold that has changed. They really should have lost to GWS and Port was Port in finals (played their GF against 7th the week before).

Either way, hope it’s a cracking game!

1 there’s very few examples of non vic teams losing a grand final they should have has home ground advantage in. It’s made out to be a lot, but it really isnt. And the 2012 2014 shows it doesn’t mean much

2 totalling up the ladder positions over 20 30 years the non vic teams will be higher on average. It would be even more stark if the development years of gws and gc are discounted.
Bottom 4 is dominated by vic clubs, the highs and lows are more pronounde

3 no evidence in results and stats that non vic clubs suffer in the H&A. Probably the reverse

Real battle of the midfields today. Heeney/Warner/Gulden/Rowbottom vs Neale/McCluggage/Berry/Ashcroft/Dunkley

Neither forwardline excites me. Logan McDonald under an injury cloud means Daniher (depending on which one turns up) and Slenderman Hipwood probably have the edge. Brisbane's small forwards in Lohmann, Rayner and Cameron vs Papley, Parker and Hayward the more interesting battle.

Whoever wins the midfield battle wins for me. If Heeney keeps up his finals form, it's probably Sydney.
