No. It said they met their budget for those games and project to earn a million for the season. It's probable that they had penciled in both these games to lose, say, $20000 each and the crowd figures were around their preseason estimates.
My favourite ground for watching the game was Princes Park.
I always felt that the ground dimensions were perfect for the spectators; Waverley and the MCG were/are often hard to see what's going on when the ball is on the opposite side of the ground.
Sitting on the wing at Princes Park, I...
Re: North lashes out at critics
Because they are making a profit, have a large supporter base, a good stadium deal and a large number of wealthy supporters who will help the club out when it's needed?
Re: North on the Brink
But the reason for the merger was that the management of the club knew things were going bad, and thought that the merger was the easiest way to avoid the situation before it happened.
Actually, until I read this post I hadn't even thought about whether the clock was counting up or down.
It was just an exciting finish.
I don't think I'm too fussed either way.
For spectator viewing distances from the action, I always preferred Princes Park.
I think it was a narrower ground, which meant you could still see what was going on on the far wing much more clearly than at the MCG.
But the expanded bench is a pretty new change to the game that coaches have only recently realised they can exploit. I think the problem was that this wasn't forseen as a consequence of expanding it.
From Wikipedia:
In 1978, the 19th and 20th men were converted into interchange players...
It solves the problem of teams having nothing to play for.
We're almost certainly going to go to 20 teams in the next ten years. That means that all teams are playing for one premiership. By the middle of the season, half those teams will know that they are out of contention, with nothing to...
The introduction of promotion and relegation was a success for the VFA when it was introduced in the 60s, leading it to its best attendances over the next two decades.
It was really the VFL moving to a national competition, and increased TV exposure that lead to declining interest in the VFA.
The problem is that that is not how they are used anymore.
The gradual evolution of the interchange bench has fundamentally changed the way that the game is played, and moved too much power to the coaches box. The coaches love the fact that they now have more control over rotations and...
Re: Economic downturn will sink book in to clubs
The proposed Footscray-Caulfield rail tunnel would go pretty close though, as it's supposed to stop at the University.
Re: Thousands of free tickets given away to " community groups " for the International series tonigh
Nope. I paid and couldn't care less who got in for free. I had a great time.
I'm more annoyed at the AFL members area which was empty. They could have gotten in for free but didn't bother...
It was always shaping up to be a lopsided set of group matches, but that was supposedly at the request of the teams. They didn't want two divisions.
And look at South Africa. I remember seeing them at the first IC getting absolutely hammered (they scored five goals for the entire tournament)...
Also, in Lukesta63's example Hawthorn would be actively making a decision to break the salary cap that they, and other clubs have agreed to.
Now, considering that the AFL has a tight control over the clubs' licensing agreements, I would say that the weight that they could throw at any club...
The turmoil of a significant number of merges/folds for clubs could only have a negative effect on kids playing league.
Will NSW kids be more likely to play league if the club they follow has just merged?
Will kids from WA and SA start playing league, where there is no team based?
Kids...
I think that once you get up around the 20 team mark any code would have to start looking at 2 division, promotion, relegation, etc.
Without it, there are a lot of teams that have nothing to play for in the latter half of the season (though you could say that already, with a 16 team comp!).
There is always talk about which players from the NRL would be able to make it in the AFL. There is also a number of players being poached by the English Super League, and Rugby Union clubs, both here and in France. Why should the AFL miss out? :)
What do people think would happen if the new...
I would guess that the reason for a three year period would be to ensure that there is more regular competition between countries, as for many of them there is not the opportunity for regular international fixtures.
Things like the European Cup are great, and will fill the gap for the EU...
How is any team expected to build support with the quality of football that the Melbourne team has dished up recently? Any club's fortunes are tied up in its on-field performance, and Melbourne just doesn't seem to be able to turn it around for any sustained period of time.
Though it's in the network's interests to talk down the amount of money that they are prepared to pay.
Why would they want to be talking about an extra 20% at this stage?
