The umps are saying Broad was under less pressure than Powell, which is patently ludicrous.
I actually agree with the Broad ruling, we really want to see players having to keep the ball alive in most cases. But as you say, it needs to be consistent.

I watch a lot of footy... it's incredible how some teams are umpired differently. How particular 'in' players get free kicks, how you can almost predict when umpires are waiting to 'find' something vs letting the game flow.
It's interesting how the game notorious for the general least umpiring involvement (which makes no logical sense) also has the most monetary gains, the grand final.

The umpiring both ways was disgraceful. Send all of them to the VFL. Complete incompetence.
Whoever gave the 65m penalty in the last should be moved on.

Brad Scott also seems to have left a pile of dogshit for his hand in the umpiring performance of the last few years before he went to Essendon.

What was with the 50s last night , how many times last week a ball bumped out of hand or stray kick after whistle ignored , last night 50 every time
Notice that the Umpires go out of their way to actively reduce any physical contest for the footy...
The unappreciated style of TV Footy...not suitable for TV screens...the so called ugly pack...the physical contest...the bump...players of all types scrapping for the footy or tackling the ball holder...the tackle is long gone and buried with these umpires...it's about encouraging the 360 degree turn and then some more and then the almighty release of the footy...usually an undisguised illegal two handed rugby throw...awwww cos he made a weally weally good twy and errtemp at whaleasing da footy!
When packs of players form for the footy the Umpires now either go straight/immediately to a ball up or a free kick found and/or manufactured...
Seems the only way the players are now able to control the flow of their own game and even make a contest of it...is by clean mark and kick...
So now its all about who/players/Teams/Umpires can manufacture the fastest 'break with ball' from the center bunce...then clean mark and kick...GOAL!
The AFL game of Football used to be a broad Church and game for all types of Footballers...big, tall, short, huge, Teams with difference and character. Now the trend seems to be drifting to exclusivity...tall rangy players that can kick...Teams with skillful marque players surrounded by support players. SKILL is paramount these days! Instead of various Teams of various flavours...we have individual skillful players able to turn the game and its momentum! The AFL focus is now on individual skillful players!
And where are they found now?!? In the AFL Draft of course! Cue the cameras!!!

The TV Monguls add an AD after every goal kicked in a 4 Q game...and the AFL through their TV show and astute commentators...ohhh and ahhh, gush nonsense...scream and go hysterical for minutes on end at the various camera angles of the same goal kicked...3 and/or diff camera angles...just to help the viewer's memory in case they missed it!
Just crap "padding" and "flannel" and "nonsense" added to the so called game of footy...mindless garbage with absence of any intelligent commentary. What do you think Watson?!? Umm..ahhh let me turn my brain on first! Richo?!? ohh geee the Tigers were lucky to get away with that! The younger viewer these days would have no idea of what intelligent and humorous commentary looked and sounded like unless they watch some videos on Youtube!
Instead of footy entertainment we have an Industry in cahoots with the Corporates to manufacture profit$..
It all looks great on TV...whizz bang, flash graphics and cut aways...just check out the TV Circus these days with the presentation of the AFL Brownlow...the dresses of the footballers partners...the clothes the footballers wear...the countless TV shots of midfielders winning the footy...the AD's ohhh the Ad's...then the one minute interview with da winna! padded with umms and ahhs...all style over substance!
Currently the viewer is not watching Australian Rules Football anymore its a manufactured hybrid of Basketball and Gaelic ball movement and kicking! The younger viewers these days would have no idea of what traditional Australian Rules Football looked like unless they watch some videos on Youtube!
