Chad Warner
When the Sydney Swans swept up Chad Warner with pick 39 at the 2019 AFL Draft, they secured a youngster with an insatiable appetite for the contest. Warner attacks the ball and opponents with aggression and is relishing calling midfield bulls Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker his teammates at the Swans. Warner impressed for Western Australia in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.2 touches (50 per cent contested), 3.2 clearances and 6.8 tackles per game. He also tallied an average of 27.1 disposals, 6.4 clearances and 7.4 tackles per match at Colts level for East Fremantle in 2019. He earned his AFL debut against Richmond in Round 6 of the 2020 season, recording eight disposals and two tackles.

Chad Warner
DOB: 19 May 2001
DEBUT: 2020
DRAFT: #39, 2019 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Willetton (WA)/Aquinas College (WA)/East Fremantle (WAFL)

The main reason I made that comment I see he won the time trials first day back and presume pretty fit,of cause that does not mean he is starter in the 1st game senior wise.

So did Jack Hiscox

Our record in games without Warner since 2021, when Warner first became a regular in the best 22:

We're 10-4-1, average a score of 101.7 points and a winning margin of 34.6 points.

That win-loss rate of 66.7% without him is better than our rate with him (65.1%)

Not a player I'm bending over backwards to keep at all. He's one of those players who feels extremely indispensable when he is there, because so much of the game plan and what we do revolves around him. It's only when he's not there that others come to the fore and we become more of a "team." Less predictable, more dangerous. Similar to Buddy, but not as good, and not as reliable.

In general mids as good as they are are just so much easier to find. You try finding a bloke who is tall enough to be key position, quick enough to be a winger, and big enough to be a mid like Dawson. Those types are impossible to find regularly. He was a way bigger loss than what Chad will if he goes. Chad is fantastic but we could play Sheldrick, Cleary, etc there

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I didn't get the Dawson hype, either. I thought his last year with us in 2021 was the best he's ever looked and I wasn't blown away by him like many seemed to be. Now as a mid at the Crows I actually think he is overrated.

I feel that he may break through next year.Since he came he has worked very hard on the weights to beef up his already considerable athletic ability. In particular, he has vastly improved his ability one on one. Also, I think he will get a better go under Cox

Unfortunately you’ll see how good he is with Draper there next year, he should win the Rising Star to be honest. Dawson can’t do everything in there, their midfield was horrid bar Dawson really.

I just don't really get the point of him in the midfield. I think he is slow and looks like a headless chook under pressure. Why recruit someone like Jordan Dawson to be in those sorts of situations?

This is probably better suited to the Former Players thread though.

Yeah won’t clog the thread let’s go to the former players thread. I like him as a mid but minutes forward though for the recor

It's easy to forget Chad is 23. He call easily be the best player in the league one day. He is already one of the best players running around.

If we're not using him correctly that's not a reason to trade him away.

He isn't one day going to be a defensive juggernaut though. Look is he very good yes, but should we be tied down by him and his demands no we shouldn't.

My ideal world in sign him for 2-3 years, use him while we are in contention, then sell at the highest point if he has indications he wishes to leave. I am not saying trade the bloke okay but we have to be smart

Whatever helps you cope with the possibility of losing Chad.

Who has that break away speed from congestion and the goal sense ( mid ) on our list who replaces him?

Even in the competition at 23

I’ll wait

Could easily draft one with a top 5 pick next year if it comes to that (via WCE). Caiden has very good leg speed though to be fair

lol

Just stop

Who

We would change our mix up if he does leave, look will he be a loss, yes good players are. However we likely get two pretty early first rounders that we can draft/trade.

We also have Sheldrick/Cleary, etc to play in the middle (among others). They aren't the same player but you get the mix right and it will work. A couple from our academy look fantastic too.

It's not the end of the world if he leaves there's options.

If he can easily be replaced why would WCE bother trading for him? Just easily replace him with the top 5 pick and keep your other pick as well. Easy!

No he doesn’t. He has perfectly adequate leg speed for the roles he is likely to play but, by the standards of AFL mids, his pace isn’t a stand out attribute.

Of course, he might grow a couple of inches and develop explosive pace. Chad didn’t have it when he arrived. But I’d like to see it before claiming he has it.
