AFL Player #13: Nik Cox - Subbed out vs GCS

Having no issue is a scale. Hes certainly not elite in the area for example
Does not need to be elite if he is not playing on Charlie Cameron or Luke Breust types. He has already shown that when he has played well at AFL level he is good below his knees. He is not one to continually run over the footy.

With Hunter's injury I wouldn't mind seeing him forward instead but defence is probably the go.
I know a good portion of this is when he was on the wing but the 2021 highlights show he could easily adapt to playing half forward.

I can see Ridley, Reid, Cox and McKay working. Particularly as you will have a smaller midfielder coming back to support.

Ridley is good at ground level and faster than people think.

My main problem is that you would basically be taking Ridley away from his most dangerous position as a floater as that is what Cox would need to do in that configuration.

Ridley's most dangerous position is playing on the opposition's least dangerous medium/small. Let the Joker run up the field and leave Ridley to clean up the defence.

I think Cox could double up that role and we could easily play:

2 KPDs - McKay and Laverde
2 Mediums - Ridley and Redman
2 smalls - McGrath and Hind

... in 2024 .. and I hope by 2025 it is:

2 KPDs - McKay and Reid
2 Mediums - Ridley and Cox
2 smalls - McGrath and Redman

As Ant has been saying, I want them to work on their craft in VFL and force their way into the team.

I've been saying all summer that I'd love Cox to be that KM covering CHF we've never had! Perkins, Cox and Langford make a half-forward line that have all had midfield minutes (which I think helps them build running patterns that fit in with that) and can cover a lot of ground, as well as take a mark. They would make a lot of room for Stringer, Wright and Gresham to work, and give us a lot of options to play fast through.

He might be in the backline but it’d have to be a remarkable preseason for it to be in the seniors in Round 1.

Ridley, McKay, McGrath, Kelly, Laverde, Redman and Hind are surely the front of the queue based on what we’ve seen.
They are for sure. He will have to show the form in the VFL to start with if there are no injuries.

Something something if your aunt would be your uncle something something.

Cox has looked lost as a wing /forward for two years I have no idea why aside from hope people think he can play there.

He can play back as a medium and be very good there. I’m not sure why you’d want to mess with that

Agreed. He looked lost and disinterested. That said, he needs to play where we need him to play. Currently that's not on a wing. It could be as a forward. High roaming half-forward for me if he does, but even then I still don't see where he fits in.

it seems our solution when talls don't work out to send them back

McKay, Ridley, Laverde, Baldwin, Reid, Hayes, Cox
That's a lot of tall KPD depth

Agree, i don't see a winger/flank option.
it's CHF or he plays back for me. And it's only been glimpses of being a competent CHF, but at 21 ideally there's time to work on that at VFL level for a year.

It doesnt necessarily matter who they are or arnt playing on. Plays some sort of role

But its more so the entirety ig the back 6 and whether they can win the ball once it hits the deck

Reid, Mckay, Ridley and Cox with (Redman, Mcgrath, Martin)

Are found wanting too much as an entity in that regards for me

Ridley, Laverde and Cox aren't really KPP's though. Ignore the fact that Cox is 200cm. He's a flanker. The same with Ridley.

KPD/flank was where i was going.
basically the defenders who aren't redman, mcgrath, hind, kelly, etc.

effectively the intercept/spoil types. we're quite well stocked and Cox is the best candidate, for me, to focus his game on being a pure forward.

Cox played CHB as a junior and was drafted as an elite defender

It’s a very tall group but Cox and Ridley can play on mediums which helps. Laverde is probably in the odd one out. I’d be looking to build his forward/mid skills in the VFL

Might want to check your wording there...

Weve got HJ and Caddy for that

Can we remove the unicorn from the thread title?

He's a better chance of being selected as a unicorn on a Gridley square than an AFL team.
