Traded #18 Jacob Konstanty

Only recently switching his focus from soccer may mean he has a bit of scope for further improvement with his skills.

Also his soccer background may help in certain scenarios like taking instinctive shots at goal.

I did not expect him to be one of the guys we were targeting, though I am happy with the pick . I remember him in the Metro vs Country game looking quite evasive and tricky to create a few opportunities he did not convert. So I think he has got potential to be a good attacking player as well as a tackling pressure forward.

National Recruiting Manager Simon Dalrymple spoke of the club's excitement in locking down a player of Konstanty's talent.
"Jacob is a ripping player. He is a very high pressure player with a strong footy IQ and he has a great turn of speed," he said.
"We think he has plenty of upside so we're really excited to have him on board".

Yes, fairly new to the game so plenty of room for improvement. No better system than Sydney to develop his skills.

November birth date too, plenty of potential scope for improvement

One commentator says Kon-STAN-ty, the other says KON-stan-ty.

Guess we'll have to just go with Kon-stant-Y.
More importantly, what nickname will he get from the boys? Konny? Kono? Konsto? Stan?

I'm a bit reluctant to buy into the Papley-Konstanty dynamic too much - the kid is his own player after all and this time should be about him, not about him and Papley.

However if Konstanty is as much of a Papley fan as he claims to be, he'd know Papley as a small forward came from nowhere to debut in round 1 of his first year in what eventually became a grand final side, and then played 20 games for the year.

Should give him some good motivation over the summer if he didn't already have it.

It's now under a week until the AFL Draft begins, not that you need to tell Jacob Konstanty that.

The Warragul local, who has in recent years plied his trade with the Drouin Football Club, will be waiting with bated breath for one of the 18 AFL clubs to read out his name.
It's been a big journey for Jacob, who up until a couple of years ago had given up his footy to play soccer instead.

When COVID lockdowns hit in 2020, however, and local soccer was shut down, an opportunity to train with Drouin presented itself, leading Jacob back towards his dream of playing in the AFL.
Playing a mid-week scratch match for the Hawks' reserves side, he managed to catch the eye of the right person in Gippsland Power talent manager Scott McDougal. Days later, he was invited to try out for the team, with the rest now being history.

"I sort of always aimed for it, when I came back in 2020 at the end of that year I sort of thought 'geez I think I could make it,'" he said.
"I thought 'I'm just going to give it my best shot and not look back' and I've pretty much had that attitude since. Every night I've always imagined what it would feel like to get drafted."

A small forward with an ability to play in the midfield, Jacob bases his game on Sydney superstar and Bunyip product Tom Papley, with manic tackling pressure and an eye for the goals. Thanks to a solid season with both the Power and Vic Country, he has had interest from 17 of the 18 clubs, and is currently projected to be chosen anywhere from pick 15 to pick 30. Although, according to him, where he ends up isn't too much of a bother.

He's his own player but:

* he models himself on Papley;

AND

* Papley has posted on social media giving a thumbs up to getting a small forward from Gippsland.

Makes it seem like they're both buying into it a bit.

They also met pre-season;
He likes the way Sydney Swan and fellow Gippslander, Tom Papley goes about his football.

They chatted before the season, a mutual friend arranging their pow-wow about the tricks of the inside 50 trade.
“He just talked about how he approaches it, what keeps him in the game, because obviously it can get quite lonely when the ball’s not coming down. He bases his game on pressure,” Konstanty says.
“That’s something I’ve kept in my mind. Pressure is a big thing for me.”

Love hearing Paps giving advice to the next generation. Also as far as marketing gimmicks go, leaning into the Papley comparisons is far less annoying than hearing every 5 minutes that Dylan Stephens was mate with Will Hayward back in 2019

Tom McCartin is still the youngest player in the AFL isn't he?
