I actually find "Bazball" less exciting than normal cricket on these wickets. Ashes 2019 was incredibly exciting - I've so far found the contest far less enjoyable because most of the wickets have come from dumb shots rather than great bowling and the pressure on the batters is so much less. Every run felt far more valuable and felt like I needed to watch each ball because a wicket might happen. Most of the England innings reminded me of the middle overs of an ODI and our innings was not that different.
As I say this we get the most exciting 20 minutes of the test match when the bowlers actually had the new ball moving. More enjoyable than most of the rest of it put together.

Watching this and have a couple of questions:

Was there much pressure from the media/fans on Mark Taylor going over 20 test innings without a 50?

Elliott batted without the grill. Who was the last test batsman not to wear the grill? I seem to remember Jimmy Adams batting without one.
Media and fans were all over Mark Taylor. It's when I started following cricket and I only know him as the guy who couldn't make a run.

Back then there wasn't social media. There is no doubt that social media definitely ramps up the pressure.

Taylor was never really a genuine chance at being dropped because he was a magnificent captain and Australia had just beaten the Windies in 95 or 96.

He was also an exceptional captain and slips fielder which gave him credits.

Still should have been dropped, completely unfair on other players who could or should have had the chance to play for Australia

Can only imagine this forum if it had been around when a trundler like Mark Ealham was picking up a 3-for.

It's great to have older users' recollections. I only started following cricket during England v RSA in 98 and seriously from the 99 World Cup onwards.

Just imagine if this forum was around during the 1989 Ashes.

"Come on Alderman"

"Piss off Gooch you Pommy w***er".

"That was plumb"

i think you could set australia 270 over 80-90 overs and they wouldn't try -too- hard to get it. that's about 40-50 overs of england batting.
could still set them 250 odd off 50 if there was a bit more wet weather and wanted to get them in again. still a chance australia knock over england if they chase quick runs.
reckon a draw has both sides feeling relieved

Bazballers don't feel relief, they want a result at all costs.

I remember he was deep into the run of outs as we got over for the Ashes and some Fleet Street smartass tried to get Taylor to pose with a bat that was a foot wide, as though he'd ever do that. Then they painted him as surly for not going along with it.

Why bother inspecting the ground at 6pm in England

The sun stays out there until around 9pm in Summer but I'm not sure it will be enough to dry the ground.

The groundstaff there will need to work overtime to get the ground ready for play.
