From experience. Nothing worse than tears, blisters or cuts on the spinning fingers.
Depending on severity it can make it impossible to bowl.

Totally agree that split grip on off spin is a killer doesn’t matter what you do or put on the finger. If it wasn’t that bad he would’ve bowled 15 plus overs by now.
