Toast 2011 Draft Pick #64 - Cameron Ellis-Yolmen

Tbh didn't understand why we were playing CEY in the midfield at SANFL level last year as he'd be down the cue behind the Crouches, Grigg, Kerridge and Lyons for a spot but it seems that the coaches saw something in him. I'm glad they did.

On another note where does this leave Matt Crouch and Jarryd Lyons?

I think Lyons has no place unfortunately. Would be very surprised if he was here next year. Infact he should have gone last year, for his own sake. There is a half a dozen teams he would go straight into their sides. Its just we have so many inside mids, and while I would love to have someone like him sitting in the seconds in case we get some injuries, thats not good for him.
VBs form hasnt helped anyone either.
Matt Crouch had some injuries in the preseason that held him back.
Cameron could make way for Grigg or Matt Crouch, as could Wright.

Didn't Lyons get an offer from Melbourne a couple years ago?
I'm not sure where he would fit in unfortunately and Grigg as well. Grigg had a big opportunity in the pre-season games to impress Walshy and push for selection in round 1 but was a bit disappointing. Out of contract at the end of the year.
Matt Crouch is the heir replacement for Thommo IMO.

He did yes, but he wanted to stay in Adelaide. He has a hot Adelaide GF and gets along with his team mates. His grandfather played for Melbourne I think.
Grigg will be offered a contract but may wish to try and get more play time at another club.
We gave up alot for Matt Crouch and we want him to keep Brad here as well. He will gwt opportunities soon. Hes also a super player.
He is out of contract this year and I havent heard anything about him re-signing.

One of the sack Chapman avatars got some draft tests from Knightmare and Cam was basically completely average in all the running tests.
Whilst Id agree he doesn't have express pace, the draft tests aren't always an accurate representation. Smith actually tested very poorly for his 20m sprint and Dangerfield tested slower than he is.

yeah, I get that. Somebody asked though and this is the only recorded information we have to go off.

I am happily going to admit I was wrong about CEY. I think he looks the goods to be a star.

Yeah, I had grave reservations about him after watching him a few times in the twos last year. He looked like one of those players that had some weapons, but too many deficiencies to make it at the level. What a difference another preseason and a new coach have made.
Go CEY!

Kudos to some of the posters who attend the SANFL games regularly who have been talking him up as an inside mid for a couple of years

He always seemed to be a half back flanker and wasn't getting anywhere fast but I remember a few posters saying that his inside work was very good and there was perhaps a role for him at AFL level in that position.

Can't remember which posters this was sorry!

Wasn't me. I reckon I only ever saw him off half back. Add my kudos to whoever. Well spotted.

Loved his inside work last year and often commented on this and his physical attributes, eg. Height, Strength, etc., especially his intercept marks but i never thought he would rectify his kicking.

Still scratching my head as to how much he has improved it. Seems more calm with the ball and more assured of himself.

Might just be my eyes, but in round 1 he looked tentative and slow to react, like he didn't feel like he belonged. It almost seemed like he did well in spite of himself.

In rounds 2 and 3 he had all the swagger and confidence of a 200-gamer. It's as though it only took one good game to gain all the confidence he needs to be a great inside mid.

Didn't a poster here mention that he has been working on his game with Bunj ?

Couldn't have a better mentor and it appears to be working wonders !!!

Only strength and conditioning work as far as I know, along with possibly Jarrod Walsh??? (dont quote me on it) and a sprinter.

No AFL related work going on as far as im concerned, but given just how talented Bunji was as a player, there may very well be some fine tuning taking place on the side.

Disagree. His decision making process is still very much a work in progress and hasn't really improved over the first 3 games. Is fantastic in close when the pressure is on - but is very apprehensive when he has time and space.

He is deceptively fast. Has a brilliant running style. His whole upper body stays completely still and balanced and he takes very long strides. That goal he kicked against Melbourne. I remember thinking that he was just jogging out of the centre square (all the while wondering where the hell the rest of the players were). Watching the replay - you can see how fast CEY is purely based on Nathan Jones little legs pumping away.

I've actually noticed the opposite :) He is one player that has consistently used the ball well when he has time, and has been very good at making space and time in close. How many times has he hit a player in space running into the forward lines ? I'll bet his kicking efficiency is top notch. Look at his two great goals from the weekend - he slowed down and made great decisions.

I think this, as much as anything, has always been his achilles heel and a big part of why he fell so far in the draft despite some obvious talent and athletic prowess.

The few snippets prior to this season that I'd seen of him in preseason games, it was very much a case of him suddenly finding himself with the footy, from a contested situation, with time and space and him clearly thinking "how the f did that happen???", he'd then panic as a result and fluff the kick. The more he feels he belongs and the more he realises how good he actually is, the better he'll get.

Those who wrote him off after his half a quarter last year, clearly need to realise how difficult it is for a debutante to perform as sub.
