I'd be very disappointed if someone with Martin's average history came in and replaced either.
Maybe he has just been playing at Melbourne's level. Looks the goods to me. Not that many mobile 198cm types out there.

So good he has struggled for game time at Melbourne in recent years, yet some here are already proclaiming him as being in our best 22.
I don't necessarily think he will be in our best 22, but all strong teams have a strong 25+ players to choose from and I definitely see him being in that range potentially. And let's be realistic, we finished 13th on the ladder and 13th in many of the main indicators so we have a fair amount of improvement in us.

Is it me or were Melbourne better with Bailey then they are with neeld?

So does this spell the end of the Hudson era or the Cornelius era?
I'd be very disappointed if someone with Martin's average history came in and replaced either.
Leigh Brown was delisted by North in 2008 and much jocularity was had at the pies for drafting him with pick 73 - I can see Martin as more of a Leigh Brown type and not a specific singular replacement for either a Hudson or a Cornelius.
So... even with hindsight on Brown - would I be correct in assuming you see Martin as less of a possibility of equalling what Brown achieved in his 3 years/65 games with the pies? [feel free to check Browns age/stats at north and compare with the improvements achieved at the pies.]

2011 started decently enough for Melbourne, but then the wheels came off as Dean Bailey struggled to maintain his position, including Geelong 186. Some players, including Moloney and Martin, were looking quite good early on.

Then this year came, Mark Neeld with his new game face and new strategies. Terrible season - probably as a result of multiple problems - where most players played poorly.

Good recruiting I think, to get a couple of experienced players with some previous form (Moloney more than Martin admittedly) in a 'down' year, thus buying them cheaply.

Mark Neeld has turned Melbourne upside down - after having a good look at what stocks he had this season....the shake up was required if want to get to the next level...it will be interesting to see if he succeeds

It might help in the long run but is doubt that they are any good next season.

I'm sure everybody at Melbourne said that Scully/Trengrove/Watts/Morton/Cook etc would all help in the long run.

What's to say that Melbourne continue their ways of wasting talent and Hogan/Viney/Barry all become busts.

Also picking up Rodan was beyond stupid and will add nothing to their list.

Martin is a great get. Demons put all the development into him and we get the reward. It is clear that Neeld is cleaning out. Martin is out because he is competing with Fitzpatrick, Gawn, Spencer, Jamar, Frawley, Clark and Dawes. He also probably got a hefty pay rise after 2011. It would be a pure list management decision. I really hope we try and use him at CHB and Goose at FB. I am a believer when it comes to Merrett the swingman. In Merrett and Martin we have 2 real swingman. Great pick up.

Asked this question earlier in the week, yet the answer has failured to appear. Just how many games did Stefan Martin play at Casey Scorpions in 2011 & 2012?

I would expect the number to large double figures (approaching 20 or even more) for someone that struggled to get a game in recent seasons.

You seem to know more about his form than anyone else round these parts, so I look forward to a factual reponse. ;)

Maybe it's me, but I can't believe some of the negative vibes directed at Martin already. FFS we picked him up for a song; cost us nothing virtually. Couldn't imagine us picking up a better player at pick 53! If he is not in our best 22, so be it! I still think he will have MORE impact for us than Dawes will have for Melbourne....and 33 picks cheaper too!

Merrett forward virtually cancels out not getting Tippett in the short term...surely I am not the only one that remembers Staker playing some cracking football as a defensive tall as well and Merrett can always go back to full back as he did this year.

I am getting very impressed with the depth and versatility in the squad now...I had good depth down to my No.30 before this trade period.

$300,000 cheaper too (at a guess).
