ISC has changed its template this year, seeing a slightly different home and clash guernsey for the Cats:

Not sure if I'm a fan of the 'cut-off' hoop at the top of the home guernsey, or the new collar, but I'll reserve judgement until I see the real thing on one of the players.

Is the collar similar to what the Demons have had the last couple of years?

What on earth is this? Pointless alterations

Is it necessary to "tinker" with this sort of stuff? Our Jumper was fine just the way it was. I'm not saying they are horrible, I'm just wondering why the need to fix something that clearly wasn't broken?

Looks like somebody in the design department is doing their bit to justify their job!

Not necessarily against some modern "tweaks" (constructional/tailoring etc) to the guernsey, but for mine it is integral, essential, in fact in our DNA that we remain a HOOPED guernsey, This sort of alteration might be the sort of change than shifts a few more jumpers at the Cats Shop, but it worries me that it's the thin end of the wedge.

It basically is the earliest evidence of not staying true to hoops. Wouldn't surprise me if down the track (due no doubt to some "miracle" performance, structural reason) a side panel is put into the guernsey, interupting the hoop design (much like what already happens on the "clash" guernsey, or the Adelaide Crows jumper).
Similar evolutions happened years ago on the famous Glasgow Celtic shirt (which shares a similarly glorious hooped history), and this caused much dissent amongst the faithful.

I don't mind what the collar is doing with the new design, but don't see the positive in the "curved" hoop.

I'd actually like to see us further accentuate the hooped design by adding back in the areas of hoops that the modern, mostly white back design deletes.
It would look like what Geelong jumpers looked like up until the late 60s, with a white patch/panel for numbers. Think how the white patch works on the current (although I believe it is changing) Hawthorn jumper, and translate that style into a Cats jumper.
At the very least it would be great for a heritage round.

Top post.

Surely, guernseys get tweaked to encourage people to buy a new one every year.

Of course, this leads to changes for the sake of it and the degradation of the hoops we all love.

Yeah, I'd say almost every club releases a new version of the home guernsey every two years, even if the update is just to the collar or, in our case, something like the order of the hoops (so the Ford and AFL logo are on a white hoop, instead of a navy hoop

Doesn't look as severe as that guernsey pic posted earlier. I'm sure South Melbourne fans were more horrified when an opera house appeared in their red V.

I suspect that for Loyalists, it was yet another kick in the guts.
But that for Hands-Uppers, it was just another small humiliation to endure.

I reckon the collar treatment looks good, and I think it will look really good when worn.
Still can see no benefit (in style terms/construction or performance reasons) in the curved or angled/cut-off hoop.
So why do it?
Change for change sake which can only lead to regret.
I actually thought that the illustrated version indicated that shoulder area of the guernsey might look broader than before, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

I know what you mean, but at least in that case they had a reason.
The club had moved to Sydney and they were trying to connect/identify with a new (and largely disinterested) fan base.

There is no reason to tinker with our hoops, there is no upside in altering away from being hoop-like in style.
By degrees, thin end of the wedge etc.
Somethings need to be protected and this is one of the most important.

Experiment and do "innovative" ideas with clash or away jumpers (although I wish we wouldn't), but don't mess with the integrity of the hoops, they are a core value, a signature, the blueprint if you like, of what a Geelong guernsey is (and always has been).

IMO they have only done it so people buy another gurnsey to keep up - they havent changed manufacturer or sponsor etc so they had to change something.

They'll probably revert back to the 2012 style in 2014 and just change manufacturer so everyone goes out and buys yet another gurnsey.... :)

Don't have a problem with the new home jumper.

The away one looks hideous, what with that stupid looking cat on the side, not as bad as the previous 2 though with the cat face and the claw marks

And are we the the only club using 2 logos? What's with that? Both are terrible. Bring back the GFC emblem.

Is say most of the new 'logos' in the AFL look shocking. I could have done a much better job when I was a year 12 graphics student. Seriously, are the AFL trying to appeal to the 5 year old demographic with all these stupid looking cartoons as logos?

Only Collingwood, Carlton and st Kilda have a 'proper' logo.

The GFC emblem was bland, very uninteresting and represented minimal marketing opportunities. The side profile of the cat I think looks fantastic, and hopefully becomes part of the club's heritage over time. The more cartoonish cat face I can take or leave, but my 6 year old nephew loves it and I think that's really where the old GFC on a shield logo failed us - it had no real connection with the club as "The Cats".
