Can't see us thinking that having Martin, Luey and Trent West on our list that we would go for another tall ruck/forward prospect with a top 5 pick. We have been down this path before and it failed!!!!

Can't also see us picking up more than 2 key position types. Our midfield needs depth and we need a genuine speedster in the Brad Hill, Isaac Smith type

It seems to be near consensus amongst phantom drafters that we will want to and be forced to take a bunch of the academy kids with our 2nd to 4th round ND selections.

Their information is certainly as good and probably better than mine, so I wouldn't want to dismiss it out of hand. Having said that, Paige's draft has us taking Wright (203cm), Hammelmann (198cm), Andrews (198cm), and Jackson (195cm). Also Dawson. I think it's reasonably likely that Sam Michael and Lisle are on the way out, but even in that case we would be left with a very, very tall list.

Out this year or next - Brown, Maguire, Staker,
Potentially Out - Lisle, Michael

Merrett is also 30 before the end of the year.

If we took all those talls sure we might be oversized next year but things would balance out at the end of the year and a years development would probably be handy going forward.

That's a good point. I hadn't really thought about retirements. I guess we may wind up with an oddly tall reserves side for a year or two, but it probably works out nicely when it comes time to slot them into the senior side as these guys retire.

I think we'll take those bolded above...remembering that key position players both (a) take the longest to come on and (b) have the most currency at the draft table down the track :thumbsu:

In any case, we have a host of small - medium size players in our best 22. No issue for mine

Interesting that you keep Polkinghorne and Raines Quigley. Is that bexuase we are likely to draft 4 talls this year to keep team
Balance

Yeah as Eons said I was just going with the talls. Moloney and Polks I would have as definate outs on the smalls with Raines a likely. I would not have trouble keeping him as a break in case of emergency type given the positive feedback he has been getting for his work with the younger blokes in the reserves. He has not dropped his head at all which is great to see.

As rockypls mentioned McGuane one I missed as well. He got injured sure but when he was actually playing I don't think he showed very much. To get another contract I suggest he would have to show a fair bit more next year at his age.

and McGuane's probably already been passed by McStay as the 'third tall swingman' type with the club seeming to want to get Paine into a similar mould having played him in defence in reserves for much of the year.

in 3 years time you'd think all of Brown, Lisle, McGuane, Staker, Merritt, McGuire would be off the senior list. so getting 4 talls onto the list this year and then focusing on runners in future years would be possible. Especially as either way I doubt we'd be making finals (or at very vest be 1 and done) in 2015 so the club is looking to build its list for 2016-2020.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Raines was retained as a mentor for the kids coming up through the ranks. There's no doubting his commitment at Reserves level.

Kicking coach?:thumbsu:

:p

Let's face it, kicking was never Raines' strength. But making the best of what were only ever fairly limited skills is where he comes from and where he would add value. Commitment, in short.

Plus I haven't observed him boring it up the kids whenever they deliver a clanger, which at this level is inevitable.

It's a similar role that Buchanan played when he was at the Lions during his last season or so, seemed to play a good mentor role for the younger players in the reserves.
Yeah agree, except that Buchanan was pretty much spent when he came to us whereas I reckon Raines has a bit left in him. Will be able to step up into the seniors if required.

Yeah, was just gagging.:)
Won a "Most Professional" accolade for the club once IIRC. Could certainly provide something if kept on.:thumbsu:

Something will most likely be brought in next season because Sydney seem to have two very highly rated prospects in Dunkley and Mills.

While Eddie and co seemed unhappy about Heeney going to Sydney for pick 19, I think the bigger concern for them was when there were two highly rated prospects going in the same draft to the same club. I have a feeling the changes will mean Sydney can't take both with the picks they will be given. There may be changes to how the bidding system works meaning they can use picks they trade for to bid for those players, but I guess that will all play out.

Probably means Sydney will just try and do a better job hiding them.
