Yeah, my bad, remembered that once I'd posted it. The other good thing about that is that Harley is somewhat similar in style and plays a similar type role to Lachie, so getting Bennell reduces their need to keep Lachie and pushes him one further back in the pecking order, possibly making him more keen to leave. This really could fall into place perfectly for us.

If we walk out of this trade/draft period with all of Carlisle, Freeman, Weller and Rice we'll have absolutely smashed it out of the park!

Absolutely. And I reckon they will be having a definite crack at the Weller deal.

Clayton Oliver would be my choice at #14, the kid is a quicker version of Josh Kennedy an absolute bull!

I agree, my family live in Echuca and my little bro played both with and against Clayton and reckons he is a gun.. Reckons he was so thick through the hips and thighs that nobody could tackle him to the ground even in under 16's as a bottom ager.

Played seniors in the GVFL under Blake Campbell at Mooroopna at 16 and has actually dominated games at that level.. Played VFL for Richmond too this year (dunno how he went)

He has got that real competitive beast inside him, real grunt. Please Ameet!

E: Just found this article that supports what I just said..

Why wouldn't gws do the McCarthy trade? Line in the sand or want more compensation that what's offered?

I'm not opposed to waiting for Weller and using our pick wisely.

However...

Why don't we get Weller now and try and pry Mathieson from his club in a few years?!

Looks like an absolute beast. Competitive, big, quick, tough, won the Morrish AND tested well athletically and in goal kicking at the draft combine. Huge career coming up.

Maybe I think you got to keep some players and Gibbs is a club man they signed him till 2019

If they are smart they might be pushing in 2019 the Saints had the worst list of any team there have been so many miracles in our rebuild it blows my mind even just Bruce kicking 50

I would not be surprised if they do what we did and trade out a player or two each draft for a couple years and next year would be their big rebuild year

This year is a bad year to rebuild so this trade gets them some youth and competition for places also maybe one or two may come good like plowman or phillips

He is a club man alright. They are paying him a king's ransom. Huge money on Thomas, Gibbs and Murphy. I think they needed to break that troika up. Make a statement that finishing 18th from 18 isnt ok. We let NDS go as part of our re build.

I'm not a massive fan of any of the guys proposed in this years draft, we need a high quality outside running mid with some size and speed, and none of them seem to fit this bill.

Ive not been to a live game of course, so others will know better than me, but... I like Gresham, great skills, but very short and we have a few players like him in Sincs and Stevens. Both Tucker and Ah Chee have both not come on as midfielders and I'm sick of us picking players we will make into mids. Balic looks slow (and not in a Pendlebury way) and indirect. And Matho, while I like the lad, seem to be something we already have a lot of, and he may not get to our pick.

For me, this make L. Weller the perfect choice for us if we can get him. He is classy and exactly what we want. And as for this "we will get him next year cheaper" business; if this trade period has shown anything, its that - with future trading - cheap out of
contract players will not be cheap anymore, and if you can get him now for a good price, you should. This also allows us not to spend a first round pick on him next year, we will not have a second round pick, and if you think the Dockers will give him to us for a third, no way! So getting Weller this year allows us to use our first pick next year and the following years first to land a big fish.

I say get him now if you can, lets not get crazy greedy!

So, if the Carlisle deal goes through as expected, that will leave Hawthorn with picks 15 and 18 and they tend to like to trade their first rounders of late for someone who can improve their side immediately (this new "no trading of more than 2 first rounders over a 4 year period" rule could really suck for a top side like Hawthorn, BTW- if that rule had been in place in recent years they wouldn't have been able to build the side they had this last couple of years). They just lost Hale and now have extremely thin ruck stocks, from what I see, so I wonder if they might have a crack at a certain someone with one of those picks, to partner Macca?

Preference order at 14:
1) Aish
2) Oliver
3) Weller (next year when OOC!)

Draft Rice and best available with next pick, upgrade Sinclair and a job well done!

We've just shown with the Carlisle deal that we paid market value for OOC players.
Freo have a strong need right now which might just let us grab Weller now for 14.

Oliver seems like a big fish (physically) in a little pond a bit to me. Not saying I don't think he'll be good, I just think once up against guys similar to him in size and strength he'll lose a bit of what made him really dominant this year. Just my 2 cents, only going off highlights and one or 2 games I watched.

He'll end up being a big bodies midfielder in the afl eventually. I know what your saying though.
