Re. Alex Silvagni:

First thing that came to mind for me was; Is Sam Rowe ok?
Other than for that reason, the recruitment doesn't really make too much sense.
We want protection? We do that via the northern blues......unless, one of the young kpds, has definitely been earmarked as a forward.
You could be right, I think SOS mentioned that Macreadie can play forward in his post draft interview.

I'm struggling to envision a scenario where both Sam Rowe and Simon White would be unavailable for selection.

Sam Rowe: 63 games in the past 3 years.
Simon White: 50 in 3.
A Silvagni: 14 in 3.

Some insurance.

I also thought Rowe but more along the lines of "Rowe goes forward" be it either if we get an injury to our starting forwards or as a starting forward with Alex playing as an experienced KPD with the kids. Rowe was originally picked as a forward and we need all the help that we can get up there so Alex may let us strengthen our weakness with little cost to our strength.

The reason we drafted Silvagni will become evident soon enough and it won't be for nepotism.
........but even Plowman is taller and just as capable of holding down a KP post, also protection to me doesn't cut it....nor does on-field leadership.

All in all though, I'm thrilled what we have picked up this pre-season against what went out. Absolutely miles ahead.

Weitering forward, Macreadie forward, Marchbank wing, who knows what's going on with the MC's plans for players in '17 and beyond.

Some may be trialled and aborted, others may succeed while there's possible failures in amongst plus injuries to factor in.

Not a big wrap on AS RD pick but maybe he could be thrust forward and be relevation or just brace the NB backline.

Be interesting to see how Schade performs at Collingwood.

I am referring to the VFL team, are you also? I see Alex Silvagni as a NB player. If that isn't his role, I got nuthin.
He'll only play AFL if Rowe gets injured. And the club won't want to expose Marchbank and Weitering to the power forwards just yet.

sounds like you have more info - anything you can share?

The one thing we know about SOS is "there is a plan".

AS has not been recruited on a whim.

The reasons may not be obvious to us now - but they will become evident in good time.

From what I have seen I am super impressed with the character of AS - seems like a great club man.

Our player development has been crap.

With so many young, impressionable and inexperienced players we need all the good leadership at the club we can get.

I have no desire to end up like Melbourne - a squad of talented kids all getting games in a rudderless club.

If AS acts as an extension of the coaches and reinforces the game plan and values we need - fantastic.

I would rather maximise the development of the talent we already have than get yet another kid who the odds say is unlikely to make it.

I have nothing, but common sense would suggest that SOS wouldn't have exposed himself to playing favourites.

That just way too risky and his say wouldn't have been made in isolation. The fact he knows Alex may have helped but it could not have been the determining factor. Whatever that determining factor is, we just don't see it yet.

Was a rookie selection for 1 or 2 years. It will cover some of our younger defenders and ensure we rotate the defense to give the younger bodies a rest. Has hardly cost us anything plus an additional Silvagni name may draw a lot of extra members. It was a good selection and can't see why you are getting bent out of shape over it...

I am not getting bent out of shape, i am just a little disappointing in the selection. I think we have enough experience all over the ground to provide the young guys get a rest and don't get beat up. I would of liked another kid, Scharenberg or Jarmen but obviously SOS doesn't rate them so we are where we are, i would just hate to see in a year or two's time one of the guys who was taken after Silvagni in the rookie draft killing it for another club.

It's quite possible than Silvagni is a better pure defender than Rowe. He's also been mentored by McPharlin and had a big end to the season, shutting down some of the best KPF's in the competition.

Rowe is full of effort, and performs reasonably for a makeshift defender, but given his relative flexibility, they may want to use him in the forward-line or as a depth option in the VFL. The pre-season will determine who the stronger player going forward will be.

I remember Plowman being interviewed, and saying he was traded as a potential midfielder.

Oh piss off, they had those jumpers already named. They all knew what each other was doing. Stop orchestrating shit.
.....and this is where the AFL loses all credibility. Not only does each know what the other is doing in the first round so does the press. I mean every journo's PD essentially had those same 10 players going to the correct club. The also knew who would make the first bid on an academy player, who the academy player was and if the bid would be matched. Brett Anderson also told me the Swans would bid on Cumming at 19. I agree that much of it is orchestrated.

Think Matty Lappin

Yeah but everyone keeps saying he is an inside mid, which Skinny Lappin was definitely not BUT I did love Lappin because he had a crack and that's all I can hope for from all our players. Show me heart and I'll keep forking out for multiple memberships even though I never get to go to games these days.
As supporters all we really wanna see is guys with skills, playing with passion & actually look like they care if they lose!

What your describing is the Melbourne model plenty of kids no real experience to guide and take on the big tasks. Its why GWS in their formative years picked up Thornton to help guide and develop. Guys like COS will if required help ease the load on our younger defenders.

Leaving them to work things out for themselves is akin to letting them wither on the vine. Its not the way to develop at any level let alone the AFL.
So silvagni who averaged around seven or eight games a season for seven seasons and played behind the likes of the great zac Dawson is now leadership material? Haha

Lappin was a beauty but maybe Lappin wasn't the best example so how about Jack Martin?
Totally agree with you're comment. Recruit well and show heart.
If you don't mind me asking Why don't you go to many games anymore?
