I was interested to see that Jon Patton didn't get picked to play for GWS on the weekend, even though Jeremy Cameron and McCarthy were both out. Seem he's fallen out of favour, despite kicking 5 goals in a game not long ago (not sure if it was was practise match, or a neafl match).

So if he can't get a game for gws, despite being in decent form and there no.1 & 2 forwards being out, one would suggest he may be available come seasons end. How would we feel about picking him up? Not sure what we'd have to give up to get him though. If the rumours of Everitt being unhappy are true, perhaps a straight swap would be in order? Would we need to give up more? 3rd round draft pick?

I did look up the contract status of Patton on the weekend thinking the same thing. He's contracted until the end of next year, but what will be interesting to see is how GWS structure their forward line with all of their talls.

Looking at our list closely, assuming certain highly rated kids develop and turn into good players (Plowman, Curnow, Cuningham, McKay, Byrne, Boekhorst etc), I foresee small forward as a major weakness on our list. Sumner has missed a lot of footy, and Lamb while he has endeavor just doesn’t seem like he will be a dominant small forward. And then there is Smith who is a fair way off it as well. Interesting then the no.1 pick this year could be a small forward (Ainsworth). If we finish last and take Ainsworth, it would mean we don’t take a mid or tall at 1. But I see Ainsworth as a small forward genius who could well develop into a mid, so a bit like Boomer Harvey. And, I actually have a sneaky suspicion Marc Murphy might play out his career in the forward line, in a few years’ time.

Ainsworth is the one I want with our first pick next year. Jet goal kicking small forward who can turn games and run through the midfield. Absolutely perfectly fits both best available AND our need criteria.

I don't know, I've just read in the past that it may have been him who requested a trade to Gold Coast last season. I stand to be corrected, however.

Still, he might be a viable trade option should Patton be available
Everitt didn't want to go but Rocket was keen on bringing him to the Gold Coast, he was his first coach at the dogs I think.

If you look closely at Patton's onfield efforts thus far, he really hasn't fired a shot of note. Yes, injury has restricted his availability but therein lies another potential problem.

You won't get an argument out of me regarding the need to recruit genuine key position gorillas but it may be a case of buyer beware with Patton.

With the mooted plethora of quality big bodied mids available in the upcoming draft, there is no way known that we will be snaffling a 178cm goalsneak with our first pick.

Might be a nice player but we have other pressing needs that must be addressed first.

He's supposed to be a rare talent, but I tend to agree with you. All depends on who else is available with our first pick and, depending on where our other picks are after the trade period, who else we think will be available to us.

Certainly will depend on how our draft picks fall (ladder finish & trades will be quite crucial again for us this year) but unless we are all reading the wrong tea-leaves, they'll be trying to pick-up another couple of rugged gutsy mids to add to Cripps & co.

Sam Powell-Pepper (East Perth) & Will Brodie (Murray Bushrangers) will be high up on our shopping list.

Essendon will get him 100% because Joey needs help we need a key forward more than that... I know mckay and curnow will be good forwards but Curnow will be a mid/fwd mckay will be fwd/ruck we need a stay at home forward Patton would be a good pick up but in saying that they would as for a bit and I'm not sure we want to give up early picks while rebuilding and we can't afford to trade off many senior players

I'm not so sure about that bit.

Trading players is the one thing we would be able to do, especially those who won't be part of our next premiership assault.

I note that Walsh & Watson have failed to impress in their first 2 hit-outs in the WAFL. Holman on the other hand was named in the best players for Central Districts in Round 1 of the SANFL.
The last two saturdays in Perth have been very wet so not great for a big fella like Watson but you would think ideal conditions for Walsh. Unfortunately for him he is playing for Peel who are aligned with the dockers so he is stuck with Ross Lyon's game plan.

Very good chance we will go after a highly rated tall forward.
McKay is a long term speculative pick really.
Curnow is 191cm, as is SOS.
Levi can't kick.
