It might not be a popular opinion but I think we miss Buckley down back. We seem to have lost any run from the back-line, I'd prefer to see Jammo, Weitering, Doc, Buckley, Byrne and one of (Rowe, White, or Plowman) depending on match-up or form.
I would use White as a third tall forward who can rotate into the midfield if we need him to relieve in there.

Plowman would be the one I would have as the third tall in defence with Rowe seeing out his current contract in the bullants line up getting the occasional call up.

He's never going to be a pack busting forward or ruck, but he can ruck most of the day with support from Levi, and we need to return to that.

He can rest forward and open up the 50 with searching leads rather than being a focal point in a pack.
I would use Phillips in the role that Casboult has been playing in the last few years... and use Cas as a lead up forward with Phillips playing the decoy role.

Phillips has shown zero propensity for this, and there are much better forwards and forward/rucks sitting there putting in decent form in the reserves.

We're too tall, and he's the weakest link.

I also agree that we're too tall but Bolton believes in tall backs and two rucks, he maybe wrong or we might need to practice the game plan better.
A compromise could be gorringe as he appears to have superior running capacity or maybe everitt in the ruck in a bilcavs role.

Phillips isn't doing what Hale did for Hawthorn, what Ceglar et al are now doing.

Casboult does. SOS and he will have sat down and looked at the analytics, discussed with the coaches and know it stone cold that the goal should be to have Casboult play that role, and that we need to bring in other forwards. Long-term, that's McKay.

Right now, it's a structure of Walker, C.Curnow, and one of Everitt and White. With a rotation of Casboult and Kreuzer, that's 4 talls up forward, and more than enough. We were the second tallest team in the competition on the weekend, and it showed.

Average height from the weekend's games:

1. Geelong - 190.2
2. Carlton - 189

3. Collingwood - 188.6
4. West Coast - 188.5
5. Port Adelaide - 188.1

=6. North - 188
=6 Richmond - 188
8. GWS - 187.6
9. Hawthorn - 187.5
10. Adelaide - 187.4
11. Gold Coast - 187.2

=12. Essendon - 187
=12. Brisbane - 187
14. Melbourne - 186.9
=15. Bulldogs - 186.7
=15. Freo - 186.7
=17. Sydney - 186.5
=17. Saints - 186.5

Green is an easy win, red is a heavy loss, blue is a close win, orange is a close loss.

What's the overall trend? Don't go tall if it's not where the talent is, at least to an extent (Freo picked just the 5 talls).

Love your work.
In an ideal world casboult is a fwd ruck (Leigh brown style) unfortunately for us he's our number 1 forward.

Don't forget we tried to drop Rowe for the weekend. Unfortunately Walker couldn't get up for the game.
I'd like to see Gibbs return to the back line, although he was much maligned as being soft when he played back there his outside class is undeniable.
It would be a good chance to roll Doc or Toughy through the middle and see what they make of it. We might just find a gem.

I like Gibbs' kicking skills off the back line (something that he tends to rush when in the guts), but I'm concerned about his defensive pressure and tackling efforts down there. Would rather see him on a wing or forward flank.

I agree. Id love to see him play more half forward. He is a good overhead mark, good set shot, and a good kick delivering into our bigger forwards.

Good stuff Jimmae

I don't think that North lost but it makes for an interesting look at things.

Tall is so passe.

I am not sure that was a fair dinkum In and Out.
Walker is a forward, and Rowe ended up Back.

I think we just need to bite the bullet on this and play the three from the list of names I mentioned and drop Phillips; plenty of teams are doing fine with shorter forward lines.

Formatting error there, noticed after I came back to my desk. :p

I think we should give Gorringe a go as that backup ruck/forward over Phillips. Think he will be better around the ground and also up forward. Also serviceable in the ruck and with his athleticism he might be a better option than phillips for the secondary ruck position trying to exploit the oppositions ruckman.

who has the fifth year option on the Daisy contract. Is it a player or club option?

I could see him traded at the end of the year to a team with depth willing to give him two years and a decrease in salary for next year. We wouldn't get much but it would probably help all three parties.

Average season would get a third round, good season could get a second.

Teams wont want him on the coin that we're paying him. That I agree is silliness. But do you truly think that nobody would want him at all whatsoever? Is he truly that bad?

If he had the choice to play for two years at a team that should play finals football at substantially less than what we're paying him per season he would be crazy to turn that type of opportunity down.

Hopefully i am not telling you something you already know but if Thomas is traded out of the Blues then he still has to be paid the same amount of money as his contract states. Im not sure what happens if he leaves and triggers the 5th year whilst at another club but as long as Dale is playing AFL no matter where he will be making the money stipulated in his current deal.
Potentially if we say he's on $650K we would pay $300-$350K of his contract and the other club will pay the remainder. Still a good outcome.

A sample of one round is a bit small to make a call like that. Last week Geelong towelled up last years premiers. West Coast were big winners. Port North and Richmond all won.

What would we have to give up for Tom Mitchell? Been on the radar a while, forced his way into Sydneys best 22, but may be surplus to needs as their academy selections develop.

Tom Mitchel is in the Swans top 10 players forget best 22, he is at a strong club challenging for flags getting paid very well already, we have nothing to entice with. That ship sailed.

Of course, and there's going to be outliers, I'm just saying if you go tall for the sake of being tall, you generally lose more games than compared with going small.

There's precious few good talls in the league right now, most are just functional, particularly those in forward/ruck roles. Phillips is a luxury we cannot afford, especially if he's playing poorly.

I don't think there is the data to support that conclusion.

Maybe if you pick too many players that can't kick you lose or too many players that can't run, or too many players that don't have clean hands. Or a combination. All of those are metrics where the Swans had it over us.

Having said that they are also all metrics that Philips is failing on at the moment, so I would be giving the best performed tall in the 2s a shot and I can't believe I am saying this but hit should be Jones

Does anyone else feel there has been an increase in free kicks paid for too high that actually were never high in the first place? It's doing my head in.

When was the deadline or hearing on that appeal ?
Fingers crossed.
I'm reasonably happy that they've copped their whack (as long as the appeal is upheld and Jobe eventually has to relinquish his Brownlow), but I'm also happy for them to feel the painful echoes of their failed experiment for years to come.
