I don't like short teams, you are quite correct.
If you don't like Sydney as a place to live long term, you would explore other options, particularly if your heart is in Melbourne. The two cities are chalk & cheese (Melbourne is far more liveable). I wouldn't be ruling out Mitchell wanting a move.

Why would any player, who is on decent coin already, jump ship from a team in contention for the flag to the reigning wooden spooner ??

Reckon I could find Sydney livable enough on good money playing alongside the cream of the sports representatives including one living legend.
It'll be a money issue if we offer considerably more he'll play for us.

id be happy with mitchell but cant see it happening. i would really like to see us target a real leader. who, i have no idea but if we could get a hodge, boak, murphy type whilst we are in the reset it would make a big difference. i like murphy but i dont see him as a great leader. good just not great. i reckon he would do better without the pressure as well. i dont want to see too much pressure on cripps & weitering yet. give them time.
Would love to see us get Mitchell. I think it would be more than simply getting a gun player. It would send a message to the rest of the competition as well as us the fans and football community alike, that Carlton is once again a destination club. A marquee signing like that indicates that we are once again a club that players want to play for.
We got a great pick up in Docherty, but that didn't send shockwaves in regards to Carlton. The Docherty story was made about the mass exodus of Brisbane. A big get like Mitchell would impact the way Carlton is viewed. It would be big for the club and put us in the right direction in the eyes of the many.

I like the move. To address a few reasons:
1. Fits the right age profile. Cripps is 21, Kerridge 22. Add Mitchell and that is a solid core for 6-7 years.
2. Midfield runners is where the game is progressing with interchange caps. Endurance athletes become more valuable
3. Absolute ball magnet, and we do not have enough of those. Right now our midfielders win at most 30-32 touches. Other teams are now getting players in the 35+ range each week.
4. Son of a former Blue is a nice story to add to the gun midfielder joins Blues angle.
5. Money-wise we ought to have a bit to play with at the end of the season. A few players are either likely to retire or be moved on from senior contracts, replaced with draftees which gives us wiggle room. Not to mention the impending end of some expensive contracts.

Didn't Chris Judd leave Wesr Coast a year after they won a flag and come to the 2nd last Carlton?
The article says we are banking on homesickness. Sure it says he has friends in Sydney but his family is in Melbourne. Judd had friends in Perth and his girlfriend's family were in Perth.
Plus we may not be looked at purely on ladder position but on rebuild progress and coaching philosophies.
I think that's simple enough.
What guarantees have you got of holding the cup at Richmond, Fremantle, Collingwood, Essendon etc?
Success is important.....Money is important....but being at the right place for you, may be just as important for many.
I like to think that there's some AFL players out there who are looking at Bolton and thinking "ooh, I wanna play for THAT guy!"
