Out of interest - who is more confident now than they were this time a year ago? Not whether or not you think we will improve on this year, but do you feel better than you did last year?

I was pretty worried this time last year, felt like we were in danger of being swamped, thought our fixture was brutal, this year not so much, but I'll probably have a better gauge on it after the draft
This time last year I wasn't thinking doom and gloom like most on this board. I did think a lot of things needed to go right in terms of development for us to become a good midfield and I think it's fair to say that a lot of things did go right. Sloane played at his usual level (albeit couldn't handle a tag), Brad stayed injury free and got some consistency into his footy. Matt took his game to another level and won the B&F. Atkins improved a bit. Douglas had one of the best most consistent years of his career. Charlie provided glimpses through the midfield albeit very inconsistent and we uncovered an absolute beauty for us in Greenwood. Bottom line a lot of things did go right.

Going into next season, I think our midfield should be better and possibly turn into our strength as the season goes on. Our backline should still be very good but we will miss Smith's rebound and run and carry next year. He does it at an elite level and is up there in terms of meters gained across the competition. I do think that Lever is easier replaced than Smith. Players seem to rise up a notch when they know that spot is there up for grabs. They generally put in a massive preseason and someone does come in and cover the loss in a different way than the player they are replacing.

Our forward line should still be good BUT I am worried that we are losing a lot of "intangibles" with Cameron's departure to Brisbane. The defensive pressure drops off (and not just the tackles but Charlie's ability to worry teams with his pace, rushing them into ineffective disposal). We also become slower and lose more of the X factor, something we don't have a lot off.

But a bit like with the backline spots, I think some players will realise there is a spot available and will put in huge pre-seasons to get than spot and perform their role, albeit a bit differently to what Charlie did. I think Knight will spend a lot of time there now that Gibson can tag. McGovern will take his game to another level injuries permitting.

Overall, I think as a list, we are better placed now than we were 12 months ago due to a great deal of player development that took place in 2017. Even players that didn't play much or at all this year (e.g. Gallucci, Doedee, Poholke etc) are better players now than they were 12 months ago. Their SANFL form at the end of the season was significantly better than it was at the start of the year. There is clear improvement there.

I think while we lost some key players from our best 22, we are in a position where we are still a young team with a lot of improvement from those players in our best 22 plus the youngsters in SANFL that are eying off those vacant spots in the side and readying themselves for a big pre-season. I think we will be top 4 again next year.

Could he develop into a mobile ruck?

He's way more dangerous as a forward. I think he will be a Jenkins style replacement in our forward line and cause no end of headaches for the opposition. We haven't used him as ruck option yet in the SANFL, but I think that also would be working around the body/age issues we have been mindful off. It will be interesting to see if we trial him in ruck in the SANFL or not at times next year. So far we use ROB, Hunter and Dear as our ruck options there.

He'll still be just 19 at round 1 next year, and showing as 198cm. Still some growth I'm guessing and could push to 200cm before he's done.

Def ruck potential when his body is developed, but so agile and strong in the air - imagine KPF will be the go.

Is a ripper imo.

Will be an interesting one to watch, if he does gain a couple of extra cms would be a very interesting Ruck prospect.

The loss of Smith has me concerned the most, he had a very good year and when on is a gun. Who can take his spot? I don’t think anyone will be a like for like and therefore we will have to change our style a little. Plus we will miss his kick outs. I’d really like Milera to have a crack at it.

I also think the coaches stubbornness with selection and respecting oppositions gameplans will need to be resolved, I’m hoping Don is switched on enough for that to happen.

It also depends on how well teams around us improve.
Yep, the loss of Smith is my biggest worry as well.

OK, since I don't think it is worth it's own thread and poll I'll ask it here:

What do we think is the biggest must do for the pre-season?
  1. Work out how to replace Smith (might not be just a player, more a strategy - same for below)
  2. Work out how to replace Lever
  3. Work out how to replace CC
  4. Get Milera ready for Rd 1
  5. Have Thor get super fit (bit tougher now..)
  6. Have Gibbs in sync with the mids
  7. Get Guv ready to be THE MAN
  8. Make sure the bodies of Gallucci, Milera, Poholke are AFL ready
  9. Get Brad through without injury
  10. Get the new coaches working in sync with the team
  11. Get the mindset that playing in the GF does not guarantee you a game in Rd 1
  12. Work on new game plan
  13. Improve old game plan
  14. Get someone to do one of those catching games at half time in the T20 matches
  15. Get Sloane to re-sign
  16. Something else because I can't think of anything more and the cricket is about to start

The club believe he will be taller than Jacobs easily.

He's not much of a defender (though to be honest, Smithers is not best at actually defending either)
if seeds accepts smiths role ... he will play every week guaranteed as long as he plays well... otherwise he will be fighting for a wing position with the likes of dmac, etc ... if i were him, id just play it to guarantee a spot.

Agree that EH is looking like he could be another one of Hamish's draft steals. His highlight reels are fantastic. I think he needs to start dominating the SANFL this year. With another AFL pre-season under his belt he should have a body that is at least SANFL ready next year. Even if he is at least a little bit inconsistent I would be expecting him to take apart some games and dominate the forward line next year. If he is going to be our JJ replacement then he needs to be a player that gets 15+ touches a game at AFL level, so he probably needs to be doing at least that much every week in the SANFL. Think he did do that at least on one occasion last year.

These poor draftee kids arent afforded much time to develop before the next kid comes in and I think if he is going to be a really good AFL player that he does need to be one of the best SANFL forwards in the league in 2018 even at 19yo.

Errr, I am pretty sure that is incorrect.

We have recruited Seedsman as wingman and that is where he feels that he plays his best football as well (I tend to agree with this). Even when Smith did not play, the coaches preferred to play Mackay and Atkins across HB instead of Seedsman who they preferred on the wing.

I think when everyone is fit and firing, Seedsman is in our best 22 players as a wingman. The reason why he was not in the team early is due to the injury issues he had to finish the previous season and his pre-season.

Seedsman on the wing can be really damaging and I suspect that we will be playing through him a LOT next year. He needs to have a big pre-season and be at his best next year. Its encouragin to see him back in training on day 1 with the 1-4 year players. He practically had no pre-season last season.

17. Get Talia fit and sharp
18. Jake Kelly to go up a level
19. Teach Sloane how to break a tag
20. JJ to bring the desperation from last year’s Carlton game to every training session
21. Tex to get a bit lighter and fitter
22. Precautionary removal of all remaining players appendices
23. No injuries

On Himmelberg, I like a lot of what he does, but I am slightly worried about his lack of physicality. This may come, but we all know how much better it is having a big forward whom will hit a pack. Hard.

That fwd/ruck role is where I see him playing in future.

Ok i guess its mackay then...

Bit worried about his kicking in that role, but Mackay isn't exactly the best kick either (in terms of being able to consistently hit a target, not just hoofing it 50+ metres to a pack).

Gibson will chew metres like you wouldn’t believe

Smithers short to medium kicking game was rated by champion Data a year or 2 back as poor, below average. It’s long booming kicks he’s ok at
