Why would we have given up Goldstein when he was one of our best players? And didn't want to leave? Which club does that for unpredictable draft picks.
The writing was on the wall at the end of 2016 for Goldie - according to reports we had a first round offer for him from West Coast - that deal should have been done - Goldie should have been convinced to leave and we now would have had 12 months experience into another promising kid. People on this board were arguing heavily for it.

Opportunities need to be taken - that wasn't - and having 3 mature ruckman on the list is just one of the imbalances we are dealing with.

What are the reasons?

The only two I'd agree of that list were McDonald and JZ

MacMillan, Tarrent & Ziebell - are heart & soul types. Trading them would hurt our culture.

McDonald & Garner - look like they could become stars, trading them for picks wouldn’t make sense.

Durdin, McKay & Ahern - market value in terms of picks versus their potential. We’d get unders.

We really need a someone with some big balls running the footy department- a forward thinker that's ahead of the curb not chasing it

That would have been a great deal for us and I suspect the club wound have bitten their arm off had he been willing to move . I understood that he didn't want to move to WA because his kids are in Melbourne. He has a right to see out his contract and you can't blame him for wanting to maintain contact with his kids. The point about 3 ruckmen is a good one. With the rule changes and the way the game is developing 2 is plenty. Trouble is they have no currency now. We'd have to pay half Goldies salary if we traded now. For that reason I'd favour trading one of Preuss or Daw.

'Aints still have picks 7 & 8. We are now 4 & 23. Their picks would not change you would think. Our 23 could sllde our further.
Jesus Adelaide who just nearly won the the flag after a reasonably dominant season have 10 & 16

Tempting..............very tempting. Should we dangle this carrot ? Sure is being discussed.
If they are so desperate for one of the currently discussed top 4 boys to complete their rise to the top.........?

We should be trading for future picks - even 3rd or 4th rounders.
We'll need the points to bid for Thomas if we want to retain our 1st and 2nd rounders next year.
I'd put Ahern as the equivalent of a pick 20 this year after a year of treatment.
Need to play the long smart game and not panic trade into this draft

You mean like someone who tried to get both Josh Kelly and Dustin Martin into the club?

Yes that was North being at its innovative best - just like many decades before.

It didn't work this time around for us but the intent was brilliant. We have to keep going though - we seem to have gone back into our shell now - whatever plan b is/was we need it to be equally innovative and ballsy. Its the only way we can compete at the highest level in this competition.

If we are not a destination club for big names then we have to do it via the draft, f/s and the odd speculative FA.

Our list is in no man's land at the moment and its going to take a lot of effort to improve it substantially - one pick 4 simply wont do it - we need multiple top 30 picks and we need our FD to be leaving no stone unturned to achieve that.

See, the thing with trading a contracted player is that they have to firstly agree to be traded, and secondly agree to where it is the club wants to send em.

Goldy to WCE was never going to happen because he dont want to leave the club nor the state.

Adelaide lost one of the most talented young players in the league to get in that position.

It wasn't 'on the wall.' And he's still our best ruckman and very capable of being one of the best in the league.

Who would disagree? But we don't have any earlier picks, and no way of getting them, except by trading good players out to get potentially good players. That's a stupid policy.

Better to do what other clubs have to do: trade in good free agents if we can, go to the draft, and develop the players we take, including later and rookie picks. What's wrong with that?

Sorta not rocket science to offer elite players big contracts..
Ok then, what did you want to see then? Joyce pull Dangerfield's twin brother from his arse?

I pick Groin Guru, with his crazy 13 club deals at least it would be fun, well only during trade week. ;)
.....with Snake Baker. Combined ticket. Can you imagine trade week and the draft? Multiple laptops churning out stats, graphs and spreadsheets....Cutting edge custom software to track bolters and sliders. Deals on the table everywhere....Phones ringing off the hook....Multiple balls in the air...Thriving amongst the chaos

They could be mentored by SnowRoo, I absolutely love his stuff, but he doesn't post enough.

Atley or jmac might get us a top 30 pick - think their ceiling has been reached

Better to let Atley's contract run out imo. Hes a FA next year and with teams not wanting to part with picks in a strong draft big chance he gets some reasonable offers. Hopefully he has a good year.

We should be trading for future picks - even 3rd or 4th rounders.

We should be looking to trade for future 1Rs. There is going to be a lot of FA movement next trade period thus any picks outside the first round will almost certainly suffer from erosion and the later the pick the greater it becomes
