Neither Yes or No with Hartung, but I thing using a 3rd or 4th pick in a trade vs a free hit as a DFA. He is miles ahead of the likes of Buckley and Boekhorst and would easily be better than 90% of the kids added with picks in the 90's. just saying

Anyway, we will find out soon

Agree Hartung makes perfect sense for a team in our postion.
He brings 63 game experience is young and runs like the wind, can play.
If Bolton and Bruce think he's worth a shot I'll support our coaches, two experts that know a hell of a lot more than me on the subject are able to evaluate his potential.

If it comes down to a choice between pick eleventy million in the draft v Hartung as a DFA, wouldn't hurt to take Hartung.

Young-ish, fast, and with a fair bit of experience already. Worst that could happen is he improves our VFL team.

I'd debate that at AFL level. If he struggled in the Hawthorn system with a side looking to bring through young talent then he has real weaknesses. His poor ball use under pressure and his lack of defence are big issues that can't be overlooked.

Agree Hartung has deficiencies, but then we're rummaging in the $2.00 bin.
A few of our recent discards were all lot worse.

Not a direct go at you but I don't get that. Just because someone MAY be better than what we have doesn't make it right especially when we have had so many players not up to it. We are trying to build a top 4 list. If a player isn't good enough, he isn't good enough. Simple.

I'd class Buckley as better than Smedts but it's irrelevant as neither are good enough.

Hartung has played more than 50 games and has shown he isn't up to it. Can't get better exposed form than that. In that circumstance I would rather go with a talented kid or a mature VFL/WAFL/SANFL player who is hungry for a chance.

Hartung = list clogger. We still have 6 to 7 of them on our list, why add 1 more? He's shown at Hawthorn that he isn't AFL standard.

Every team will always have players some would like to call list-cloggers. There's simply no getting away from it.

6 or 7? That's great, as it means we have 37-38 ready to go best 22. Wooooohoooooooo

Is this what you mean?

Hartung is a know quantity that is not AFL standard. We’ve had rookie selections that are better players than him, so the draft number is irrelevant.

Hit the draft and pick a rough diamond. An unknown is still better than a known miss.

Think you are under estimating his quality

Seen enough guys delisted to go on and have solid careers, Carrots and Wright come to mind, then you have Hamling, Membrey, Roberton

Having said that, if SOS deems a kid at 90 odd better than Hartung, so be it, some good quality could slide.

Unless Hartung serves a purpose now based on his abilities as they are now then go to the draft.

You can’t recruit a Hartung on the hope that he is going to get better. The fact is he’s had plenty of opportunities to develop.

Best to put these developmental games into a fresh talent that could be a much better player.

People's ideal drafts?

Mine:

3 - Rayner
10 - Brayshaw
30 - Tim Kelly
73 - Jack Roughsedge
3 - LDU
10 - Bonar/D.Fogarty
30 - L.Fogarty/Patmore
72 (in the current order) - Kyron Hayden
6th round pick - Amartey/Kreuger
7th round pick (next pick) - Sambono

Take that and run
If someone offered me the draft order listed, but I had to flip a coin where I've picked two options, I'd shake their hand and take the deal.

As it stands I'm sure Port, Freo and West Coast will see to it that Hayden and Kreuger aren't on the board before we get another pick.
