I'm curious.
People are quoting our ability to pay 105% of TPP cap, and/or extra space in cap over and above current TPP.
This involves cash $'s.
We struggle to make a profit as it is.
Where is the extra $'s sourced from?
Our business model or AFL?
If the AFL, is it fully funded (ie: the full 105%)? Or is it funded to a point (ie: capped at 100%)?
Either way, the $'s need to come from somewhere.
And if we either fully or partially fund this stuff, no way can we do this long term unless our business model changes.
Interested in the answer if you have it.

If we head into 2018 with a team like this we could go a long way into September:

B: Webster, Brown, Geary
HB: Newnes, Carlisle, Roberton
C: Riewoldt, Ross, Kelly
HF: Acres, Bruce, Billings
F: Gresham, McCartin, Membrey

Foll: Hickey, Steven, Rockliff
Int: Gilbert, Weller, Stevens, Sinclair
I agree we could go a hell of a long way with that team, but I suspect the guy you left out of that team may be a big part of the reason we may not be into Rocky, in Jack Steele.

We might think we've got the next Rockliff and as such don't need to fork out a pile of money for the original one, especially if he keeps the next one from getting into the team.

Gonna be some epic melts from whichever club misses out on Kelly.

Pity the front runners are us and Nth really. Both badly need his level of talent and more.

Hope we get him. No point having a huge warchest if your not prepared to spend it on the best talent / value available.

yeah , Steele is in that team for sure

Also reckon our "new recruit" Freeman may figure into team calculations next season as well, doing everything asked of him at this stage. If we do land a big fish or two, 2018 could be a very interesting year, excitement plus.

All the clubs are just arms of the AFL, they'll give us enough money to pay whatever we need to.

Would love an either Kelly, Lever/May combo or a Martin, Lever/May combo.
I know everyone is expecting Goddard to be up and about, but what was said about him at Sandi, is he is just a slow lumbering player. Not sure how many games he has played since returning from injury, but slow & lumbering we don't need.
196 cm coming of an Achilles injury give him some time.

He was a forward if I remember correctly, I think he may surprise a few playing forward and pinch hitting in the ruck. At the draft combine his 20 meter sprint times were good.

I don't think Steele would be the guy to miss in that team.

Rockliff finds a lot of the football we really don't have anyone like him imho.

I think a lot of resigning are being held up by the afl messing around with the tpp. once they sort that out
things will move at many clubs including the saints.
need Kelly no matter what the cost with draft picks.

I find most of the real contested ball beasts have shown signs in their early games of what they are capable of.
Rockliff only played one game as a 19yo, ( and it was bad ) but a year later he had games with contested possessions of 12 , 12, 12, 13 and 17.
Now he gets over 20. Shit!, we do a little dance if Dunstan gets more than 20 possessions total.
Dunstan got 15 cp's in an early game , and i'd hoped it was a good sign, but he's not equalled it since.
Steele is still a maybe, but i doubt he'll win it to the extent that Rockliff does.
Ross really flies in the face of my theory, really improving his contested ball winning ability.

Out of interest, what is May's trade value?

Could we manoeuvre a deal for May and McKenzie? Future 1st and 3rd maybe?

I'll put my hand up and admit I haven't watched much GC footy, but from what I have (years previous), McKenzie could do with a change of environment and could provide a handy option off half-back with his ball use and ability to match-up as a 3rd tall. I know he hasn't played much in the past 1.5 years, but he could be a good "money-ball" pick-up.

I remember Rockliff pretty well when he was at the bushrangers they used to show more of the under 18 than they do now. Now you get the championships and not much else.

Rockliff was a funny player he was very strong overhead and they used him more as a small forward, if I recall correctly he also had ankle problems and carried a few extra pounds. I was very surprised he wasn't drafted I always thought he would be a player, he had a great game in the grand final but it seemed his papers were stamped and Sidebottom kicked about 10 and was the talk of the town so to speak.

The Knock on Rockliff was that he would be found out at afl level because he lacked pace etc. He was always a clever and aggressive player from what I saw of him but I guess he didn't test well and hadn't spent much time in the middle. They had another clever rover, I think he was their captain kid by the name of priest, quick and clever with the ball.

The recruiters are ruthless on these kids and seem to take an almost collective approach, watch that grand final and tell me Rockliff didn't deserve to be drafted on that game alone.

Anyway I guess he has had the last laugh, I like him he can really find the ball and I know he can be used forward.

If we were prepared to pay him enough he would be free, Brisbane as it stands would get pick 2 in compensation.

Kelly and Rockliff that would be a nice combo to add.

Yes I think you are right about the contested ball, I have asked the question on here before how many kids who aren't high possession winners as juniors go on to become one at afl level. Finding a lot of the ball is it appears an underrated skill by many.

Have a look at Toby green, kid plays half forward now and still finds more of it than some of our mids.

We passed on Rockliff last year and said we weren't interested. Why would it be any different this season? F/A would be the only reason, but we've already made it clear we don't desire his type.

He's almost unnoticeable on the ground. When we played them this year I thought he was injured and I check the end game stats and he has had 64839264 disposals

F/A might be the only reason, but it is a good reason!

I don't know that the club is interested, I'm just spitballing.

I like him a lot I think we could really use him, the stats don't lie.

Just for the record what is his type?. If you mean he is reputedly a bit of a campaigner show me a great side that doesn't have a few.

Why would our position have changed? I don't know another year to evaluate the list, the fact he would be a free hit other than salary, lack of other options, take your pick.

He hasn't had the same attention in the media as Dusty and Fyfe. Just got a sneaking suspicion that he has bought in to Faganism and is happy to stay put... on the basis he gets a decent contract from them.

If his manager was shopping him around at a decent price, you'd be crazy to not look at him.

That said, there's been no nouse about us or any other club chasing him.

Did we pass or were we content to have a crack when he would cost 0 at the trade table?

His "type" is the inside "extractor" and we may feel that Steele in particular will develop sufficiently in that role that we don't need another like that, who gets most of their ball on the inside, but isn't quick and doesn't spread much from the packs. Then we also have Koby and Armo and then Dunstan.

If the article on us dropping out of the Fyfe race was on the money, we're looking more for speed now.

On that basis, it will be trades all the way this year... no free agents, just trading for jets.

I think there is a spot for him in our team when you consider how good he is as a small forward/midfielder.

If we only want pace Rockliff isn't our man, however we have a few players getting games who aren't in his class and are glacial pace wise.
