If offers are going up, then it probably means Kelly's first instinct is to stay put. So clubs are making bids that he can't refuse...

Michael Warner suggested 'On the Couch' that the bidding for Kelly is at such a level that it's more likely that he leaves GWS than he stays.

And we still have 1 premiership I'm well into my 50's we need a bonafide star to come to us we are a side of good players no stars or match winners, put a Dangerfield type into our side & it changes our dynamic Martin or Kelly will do that.
Are you suggesting we didnt win the flag in 09 because we didn't have Cousins?

A Cousins who tore his hammy game one and was ordinary all year for Richmond?

Love this statements. So provable.

Wow. I can't believe how many people on here ACTUALLY seem to care what journalists say or write about us! Wow, how sucked in are you by these unskilled self-promoters who have no influence on anything unless you acknowledge it?!! You put what journalists say ahead of winning a flag? What will the media say if we get dusty and blah blah blah? WHO CARES?!!! If you say somebody would be a bad influence on younger players fair enough, but to make a case against a player based on what the media response would be is just....wow.
I think it's extremely fair to say you're completely missing the point that those you're ranting against with all these capital letters and exclamation points are making.

I for one don't particularly give a flying rats tossbag what they write about us, but if you think the likes of Matt Finnis and our board- who are working their asses off to repair all the damage that years of negative publicity have done to the club- wouldn't care, then I'd suggest you are absolutely kidding yourself and are extremely naive.

We're a small club, with a small membership and massive debt and I imagine we have to work twice as hard to get anyone to sponsor us as some clubs do and so-on, and whether we think it's fair, or like it or not, negative publicity would make all that sort of stuff an awful lot harder. Making it much harder for us to become stronger as a CLUB.

So I can pretty much assure you we're not in a position to just recruit anyone we like, solely because we believe they'll help us on field.

This would be a big part of our "character first" recruiting policy in recent years and we probably took a bit of a step away from that when we recruited Jake (who had widely known issues, on field and off) and within hours we were probably regretting it, as we walked into a shitstorm. That would have been a timely reminder of what can happen when you take a punt on someone of questionable character, or associations, etc.

It's not just as simple as "will they help us on field", as we learned the hard and expensive way with Andrew Lovett, for instance (someone who's character we had to have assurances on before we agreed to take him).

Maybe Dusty fits this sort of description and maybe he doesn't, I'm sure the club would have a better idea than most if not all of us, but if he does, and landing him would require committing millions of dollars to him, I can certainly see why the club might baulk at the idea and why plenty could be against it, as much as they'd love to have him on field.

If the club believes he ticks the character and so-on boxes then I'll be pumped if we get him, but it doesn't mean I won't also be slightly nervous from an off-field perspective..

Exactly.

I don't care who wins us a flag as long as we get one.

Get Dusty. Get Choco to mind him & get a bloody flag.

Good, then instead of saying "I don't want him, imagine what the media would say", how about "I'd love to have him but I doubt the board will let it happen because of what the media would say"? I could almost stomach that. By the way, I would imagine that conversation has already happened or I doubt the club would be going ahead and announcing their interest in Martin as Cox just did. Wouldn't you imagine that chat has already taken place? So if you really don't care what the media say and the board has OK'd the whole thing, do you still care? And yeah it was a rant with capitals and exclamation marks. Good to see it was interpreted as intended. I can't stand the gutter dwellers in the media and I hate it when people suggest that their opinions matter.
As for sponsorship, is this naive?
June: "Oh damn, we just lost a sponsor".
October: "Awesome, we just won a flag. Can all you prospective sponsors line up out the front?"
Companies have short memories, flags are NEVER forgotten (especially Saints flags).

Was the club informed off the record that he's re-signing? I find it unusual to be so heavily linked to a player for so long to then drastically pull out so early. Smells funny.
My understanding as of yesterday when I made a call was we felt happy at about 1.2-3 and Fyfe made us aware that he then wanted 1.5 and we developed cold feet.

I think with every week kellys price becomes to much..

1.5mil is almost now the starting point, plus the 2 firsts in a trade. No way, I'd sooner take a whitfield/hopper/smith and hawthorns pick to the draft

What if he is the only real good player available? Id take him now at that price. Nearly already the best player in the comp at 22 years of age.

Or the fact that he would always re sign and the club found that out. Moist likely outcome for mine. I reckon like Dusty they were dreams where as Kelly most likely isn't for one Victorian club. Just hope its us. That's why a good performance for the rest of the year is vital.

Rediculous money. Surely a sign that he's happy to stay at Freo

Hard worker? Hmmmm....I know Richmond players who say when it comes time to do the weights in the gym he does nothing and sits around. Have a look at him he is just naturally freakishly strong and bulky but doesn't have any gym definition. Does this impact his game?? No it doesn't however I think he is just a natural freak but not necessarily a hard worker. I would still take him but we would need to be strong enough to deal with all the media backlash, Saints cop it worse and of course Bombers fans think they do. Captain Luke Hodge got done drink driving not long after Brett Ratten's son died and it wasn't a big deal or heavily pushed by papers to over the top proportions. If all this pressure about the Marc Murphy crap has affected them then imagine the s h i t that will come.

Not sure who your source of information is, but it was mentioned in the media this week that Dusty does about 3 boxing session per week in a private gym outside the club's training schedule.

To think that you can become the most dominant midfielder in the modern competition without a fanatical work rate is delusional.

On a 26 y.o with two broken legs who hasnt set the world on fire.

For a 22 y.o who is almost best in the League with his best to come.....most certainly

A couple of seasons back Dusty's name was being bandied around for trade and the Saints (I think Richo) was quoted as saying "not interested". Admittedly Martin circa 2017 is a lot better player but I wonder if the club's stance on him has changed that much, that we would now throw the cheque book at him ?

Players are becoming more and more money orientated. No consideration for the rest of the clubs list just pay me 15% of the the whole TPP - greedy! Good luck to him getting that at Freo I hope he gets shafted.

On current form Fyfe is not worth much more than $600-700k. Factor in the prospect of him returning to his 2015 form and his worth gets bumped to about $1.1m-ish. With every week that comes and goes and his form doesn't improve, that value is going to diminish.

If I was Fyfe, unless I knew that the current form is temporary, I'd be signing pronto.

As opposed to Carey getting a million way back in 1999. Things haven't changed in that regard for years just like most stars stay at clubs or leave to get back home.

called it early this year that fyfe would stay at freo on stupid's amounts of coin and play out his days in an average football side

he's going to enjoy 5-6 years of being driven into the ground, similar to kerr at wce when their star mids all retired

I think Fyfe will be back to his best next year with a big preseason behind him. Never write of a champion
