The proposed $12M deal works out to be $1.3M a year. He turns 23 before the start of next season. Paying a bloke into his 30s $1.3M a year is excessive even if the next CBA sees another 20% increase.

That's 40% so its equivalent to 900K in todays money. Seems ok to me. in salary cap of 15 million. Still leaves 13.7 million for others. Anyway if he helps gets us a flag he can have the whole 15 million for all I care.

Don't fall for that he can only get better routine, he doesn't need to improve mind you but it doesn't always work like that.

Brereton was always saying that about buddy after he had that great year in 2008, I think that was his best year.

I could find more examples of improvement than going backwards so I will go with the odds. Buddy is a great example of not going backwards even ast 30 years of age. Happy to use his name.

Yup 900k is pre last cba money is still very excessive for a bloke playing in his 30s. That's why I'm more inclined to pay the larger portion of the deal in the first few years. Call it a signing bonus. Pay $1.5M over the first 3 years then a further $1.1M over the next 3 years. 6 year deal in total.

What if at 29 he is the best player in the AFL and wants 2 million dollars a year over 5 years. It isn't a huge stretch that could happen.

Yeah great career but hard top what 113 goals another 80-90 points Coleman medal and premiership.

Anyway point is I'll take Kelly as is and be happy if he continues on as is.

How many flags has buddy won sydney?

I get how easy is to get carried away with an idea of a young champion player coming to your team. I get carried away myself, but theres no guarantees in afl.

If anything the whole world including some sydney fans were shaking their heads when they announced the contract. And in hindsight, there was reason. Players get pushed out.

Kellys a huge get but the club have to be reasonable.

What are the chances of that? 1%? I reckon there would need to be another team enter the competition & offer him that & Kelly's management want us to match it.

Its 40% increase from todays SC and Martin is rumoured to be offered 1.5 now. I know he will only be 26 but I'm sure Roo was offered a huge amount by the pies at around 29 years of age. There will be a 2 million dollar player in 2 years so 2 million in 7 isn't a big stretch.

The Kelly situation is becoming ridiculous imo. Very good player & a very good chance to become the best in the competition. But paying $12M over 9 years is too much for any one player. It's not even the amount that is the main concern, it's the length of the contract. I'd have no issue paying on average $1.2M per year but over 5 or maximum 6 year term.
I would even go 1.5 over 5. That takes us through our window and if he wants to FA, it will fast track the next rebuild

Cant read it. Who were the three who signed?
Setterfield, Perryman and Taranto. Hopper not being signed is the interesting thing about that article, would of thought they'd signed him by now if he was staying. Going after Hopper and Jones on around 500-600k a year each would still be a great off season and we'd be a strong chance of keeping our Hawthorn pick. Could also go after Tucker for a third round rounder.

Along with Kelly, Hopper, Smith & Kennedy also remain un-signed. Kennedy is another bloke I wouldn't mind. I reckon he's got a few more tricks than Hopper & will be the better player long term.

If some of you knew what some of our stars got up to over the past decade, you would change your opinion on Martin.

And with the things I have heard, which are pretty rife for a Caro type gossip column scandal, nothing has been written about them.

Some have alluded to certain illicit behaviour, but none of this myth of "if it was St.Kilda we would be crucified" myth.

Every club thinks they have been victimised by the media. Ask and Essendon supporter for example.

Couldn't care less about Martin the person. He is a hard worker otherwise he wouldn't be an elite AFL player at the top of his game.

If he came to the Saints, I would learn to love him.

Thank god there are still some sensible people on here. As you say, every club thinks they're victimised by: media, umpires, AFL. Just go look at every other club board.

(Cut to: BUT WE ACTUALLY ARE! :'( )
