I think you misunderstand.

If Kelly in trade week nominated St.Kilda ( after obviously verifying we would trade for him) and we backed out because we wanted to play hard ball, we and the player would look stupid incompetent, and not an organisation a player, agent, or other clubs would want to deal with.

Imagine if Bains said, oh dealing with Essendon is too tough, we will keep pick 5 and 23.

We look stupid, dont get Carlisle who had been excellent probably use 6 on Gresh ( hi David King) and get someone like Morgan.

Would have been a disaster, and probably a reason why we are talked about with these big trades because Ameet got it done.

This phoney rumour period doesnt count.

That wouldn't be a good look but I think all parties involved are a little too smart for that, still everyone would spin it their way if it did happen.

I know what your saying in your senario the asking price is not over the top and the player has agreed to come and has nominated us, the only reason that doesn't get done is because we decided we don't want him.

Just the same it's still not his business to tell us what to pay or to expect us not to bargain, counterintuitive to be hurting the side you have agreed to join.

I think of the treloar trade, he nominated Collingwood after a long period of rumours about where he was going. I always thought they overpaid I wouldn't have been bothered at all if Collingwood had said love to have you but that's too rich for us.

You can't have players telling you what to pay their old club, any player or agent that tried that on me would be told to look after their own business and let the club do theirs.

The Carlisle deal worked out better for us in the long run, he has been very good and I love Gresham. Having said that we have no idea what the club would have done if they had walked away, at the time we would have looked pretty smart given jakes happy snaps and 12 month ban.

theres a guy Liam Ryan playing in the WAFL... this bloke is a star !!! just won the goal kicking tally for the WAFL as a small forward (68 goals from 20 games in his debut season kicking 40 goals from 16 games) .. takes grabs like Howe regularly... i know we dont need another small forward but this guys is an upgrade on both Minch and Lonie ...

All good points and technically correct re just walking away.

As it is a small industry, everyone knows everyone elses reputation.
Essendon are campaigners
WCE are worse.
Some seem to trade well with others, GWS with Carlton and lesser extent us.

Point is you get a reputation of screwing over a player during trade week, clubs, agents and players think twice.

The Carlisle trade was a case in point. We could have walked but would have been heavily criticised.

Looked terrible the day he signs he is on snapchat, although the Saints came out of that OK.

Think the recruiters play the long game as well. Saints tried to trade up to draft Kelly, and have nurtured that relationship for years.
Would be almost inexplicable to get him to agree then walk because we didn't get a second rounder back.
And who knows what the long term deals are. Maybe GWS and Ameet came to a future deal and we got Jack Steele cheap.

All supposition, but hey what the hell else are we gunna do for 6 weeks?

About a month before seasons end - he was right to go and return to vfl as stated by the club.

Then nothing. No Paddy, no news, no update.. It just has me concerned.

If he was put in cotton wool, why not just come and say it? I've heard rumors that his parents are actively frustrated with the way we've handled the whole situation. His knocks and our reluctance to play him..
