The loss today means we just put a couple away and have a look at rice and give the big bloke another run etc.

Doesn't make waiting for the trade period any easier.

I like the idea of trading a few out if we can get the players we want in return, obviously I'd prefer to use our draft picks but some clubs may have little interest in that.

I don't like Ross, Stevens, Steele and Dunstan all in the same midfield it's way too slow. It might be different if we had a couple of flyers outside of them but we don't.

Are we the slowest side in the league and if we aren't who is?.
Stevens is depth

Part of me wants to say go after full forward by trade or free agency. Would bruce perform better if paddy was in and playing good football? but then again can we risk having a forward that can play better when others are around him. Given where we are at and who we want to get over the trade period , also with roo retiring. He will get another year, unless stkilda do some thing out of the box. They will want to try and give paddy, josh and membrey a chance to try and gel. With all the misses this year and about it being so well known. They are already in more pressure they need to be. If they were all kicking straight. It takes the pressure off the player because you know your team takes most of their chances. Every thing is about being relaxed, confident and in the zone. I know they have sport scientist, but if must be a mind set our group has. If only we won 09 and 10, the club could have that confidence and winning culture.

Assuming Carlton lose their next two matches and North lose at the Gabba, Brisbane will miss the spoon and end up with pick 2 or 3. If Rockliff goes for big dollars and AFL ticks off on band 1 compensation, they will have two top four picks.

Saints 2017 First (~8) + Future Second acquired through trade + steak knives = Brisbane pick 3/4?

Hawks pick and future first can be used for a big fish trade

We still don't win the ball in tight though. For a team with so many insiders we lose a lot out of the middle and stoppages. Billy feeding Rocky would have resulted in much more first use. Losing Stevens didn't help, he can go inside and outside.
We won clearances today by 31 to 27. That's an area that Melbourne are strong in. Our main clearance players today were Longer (24), Ross (24), Dunstan (22), Steele (21) and Steven (27). The first 4 still have their best years ahead of them, and Steven continues to look like he is playing injured.

Stevens barely played today and Armo's on the sidelines.

We don't need any more inside players. The game was lost today because we butchered the ball in the 1st quarter, and then failed to execute when we were on top in the 3rd, scoring 4.7.

Poor foot skills and lack of outside run killed us not lack of contested ballwinning. Inconsistency performance in those two areas are the story of our year IMO.

Rice to replace Geary in future
Steven has a few years left I hope but have midfield depth with Dunstan , Stevens , Freeman
Brown would like to draft draft someone like Brown from GWS

  • Maverick Weller trade for Balic / highly skilled ball getter
  • Armitage trade - age and injury has caught up to him
  • Battle
  • Marshall
  • Long
  • Lonie trade
  • Hickey trade
  • Mimchington
  • Wright
  • Pierce
  • Rice
  • Mackenzie
  • Holmes trade

Amongst all the melting, I think we're forgetting one critical point. We have an extraordinary amount of cap space, that must be used or we lose it. It's all likelihood that we make some god father like offers if need be, just to use that space. If it's not Kelly, it'll be someone else. Remember, Ameet and co. do their best work away from the media spot light, if you think we've only got a couple of irons in the fire then you would be extremely naive.

Can we just hit the jackpot already? Not intending more jacks but LUCK with players that will instantly improve us. High likelihood they will start with a J.

I posted something similar earlier.

Roo, Joey & Dempster retire. Billings & Robbo unsigned. Take those blokes out of our best 22 & add maybe Fatlop....

& you thought the 2017 season was a disappointment...

I'd be close to microwave time I reckon

Some amazing posts on here tonight. Last week we had people saying Richo is a genius and this week we want him gone. Not to use mental health as a joke but a large portion of saints fans must suffer from bipolar when it comes to this club.

In fairness I can understand after the first quarter and a half today. That was the most putrid display of foot skills I've seen for a long time.

But let's take a reality check for a moment. The team we're fielding at the moment would almost be our youngest in terms of age and games played for a long time. We played horrendously for basically the entire first half and only lost by 4 goals.

Not much to cling to there but what also gives me faith is knowing that we have a very strong off-field team to take us forward over the Trade and Draft periods.
Don't think anyone said Richo is a genius.

I think people can get a bit caught up in the whole issue of our midfield's lack of pace. What is a far greater concern for me is the skill level (or lack thereof) of those mids. None of Steven, Ross, Dunstan, Acres, Steele or Stevens are any better than average kicks (most are below average). Compare that with the kicking skills of Dal Santo, Hayes, Goddard and Montagna (from our most recent successful era), who are all above average-excellent kicks. Speed is of no use when the ball is constantly kicked to the opposition. Most of the recent successful teams have actually had a core group of slow midfielders, but who also happen to be either highly skilled, strong at clearances, or both (see Hawthorn, Sydney, the Dogs over the last few years and even our aforementioned 09/10 group).

As Saints supporters we obviously watch them play week in week out.
To me,i feel our best is awesome to watch and our worst(yesterdays 1st 1/4) is woeful, so is this because it is a young developing team,is it the coach, is it mental,is it because we are StKilda and thats been our culture forever.
How can so many (Recruited because they are the best in the land) AFL players kick so poorly so consistently,in general field play and when having shots at goal.
This team of ours should be playing finals this season(and thats a definitely should be from me),but they just waste so much of their good football with, just one silly play or a dreadful kick at goal.
Is all we need just a big fish,i doubt it,and not only do the players need a psychiatrist,i think all us long suffering supporters (just for being a Saints supporter)do to.
Our Administration need to sit down at seasons end and look long and hard at every facet of our club, and fix all the issues.
And personally at 59 years of age i want the problems solved sooner rather than later.
I love the Saints and i want success

I came to bigfooty because Facebook comments made me want to stab myself but some of the **** on here belongs on Facebook.

The club came out and said we can see improvement while getting less wins. Every chance we end up on 12 wins again going from one of the softest draws to one of the hardest. We will probably end up being one Ryder to Robbie Gray set play away from finals also. This year has been a successful DEVELOPMENT year. Steele and Carlisle have come in, players like Ross and Billings have taken the next step and Freeman has shown great signs in the VFL.
While Acres and Sinclair have cemented spots in the 22, and White looking very capable I only am disappointed by McCartin and McKenzie who I had high hopes for this year.

To the team out there yesterday, we could potentially add three top 10 picks in Paddy, Kelly and Freeman who all add something we desperately lacked.

With finals now out of the equation I look forward to giving Rooey a proper send off and looking forward to a very exciting off season for us.

For me there is absolutely no reason to trade our picks (for other picks), unless it involves pick 1. Raynor would be the only reason, but we'll get a player so I feel its a wasted conversation.

As for the why would a gun want to come to a
side not playing finals, Treloar, Adams, Prestia, there are plenty of examples of it. Add in Jellys class yesterday and some decent goalkicking and we win by 6 goals.

Stevens is depth

No he's not. While he's not elite , he wins contested possessions.
This stat is mostly ignored in favour of the more simple. "total disposals".
But if you let the other team get the ball in front of you its worse than a turnover. You've turned it over before you even get it.
A player like Clinton Jones if he has 50% turnovers is better for the side than one who allows his opponent to get the ball.

StKilda do not have a player who is "elite" at winning the contested ball.
Armitage and Steven have a history of winning a good bit of it , with the occasional elite game.
Steele has potential to be one, but ( and he's bloody young remember) he's not consistent at all.
Stevens is also not consistent, but has shown he can get in and to the job.

Dunstan has not had a great contested game since his third game ever. He's the depth.

You don't have to be Einstein to work out we are crying out for some elite midfielders. I was one of those against going after Rockliff because of his age but I have changed my mind. If we somehow snag Kelly what a perfect fit an experienced Rockliff would be in the midfield as well. You saw yesterday how the experience of Jordan Lewis was such an advantage in finals like footy.

It's always disappointing when you have even half a chance to play finals and the door gets slammed shut.

I really don't see how the conversation has changed much from 4 weeks ago.

We have improved and have the bones of a side, with a good offseason we are a finals side with a great one we push for the top four.

Paddy will be an A grader barring injury and we may have maybe two or three apart from him that could be best 22 that are playing in the two's. Opinions may vary but rice, battle, long, Marshall, freeman and the Irish boys are all a chance to break into this side in the next year or two and a couple have real pace.

Don't get too down on the saints at least give the club a chance to do their thing over the trade/draft period, if that's a complete waste, then melt away.

Get kelly and Whitfield for our 3 firsts 2 this year and 1 next year. I dont care we need run and speed.
Then get rocky via FA.and have a look at trengrove perfect second ruck and or menziel or anyone else with class and foot skills.

We need speed, foot skills ( hitting targets) and a genuine second ruck. Anything else is irrelevant

And work on Longers weaknesses, stop getting him to hand off every time he gets the ball, it's a joke. Gawn was having a giggle yesterday.
