ST KILDA has zeroed in on Greater Western Sydney big man Adam Tomlinson to bolster its push for finals next year.

The Saints believe the 193cm running machine is open to a move back home to Melbourne and will sit down for key talks with Giants officials about Tomlinson on Monday.

The Oakleigh product is highly-rated as one of the most versatile young big men in the game. He gathered 26 possessions on the wing and was one of GWS’s best players in the preliminary final loss to Richmond.

While the Saints have not yet discussed any potential trade terms for the 24-year-old, they hold picks No.7 (from Hawthorn) and No.8 in the draft and are well placed to strike a deal with the Giants.

It is understood St Kilda could potentially part with one, but not both of their first-round aces to nab the hard-running tall.

St Kilda list chief Ameet Bains on Thursday said the club was also looking at delisted Swans’ defender and former Bulldog Michael Talia to help bolster its key defensive stocks.

Bains said the club was not looking to trade key forward Paddy McCartin.

“We’ve had some injuries in the back half,” Bains told the league website.

“Hugh Goddard, who we’re still quite bullish on, obviously has lost a couple of seasons now with an Achilles injury and a toe injury.

“So whilst we’re hopeful that he gets back to where we want him to get to, he’s still got to work through his rehabbing which is progressing well but will take some time.

“And we’ve got Nathan Brown and Jake Carlisle who both played the entire season for us and stood up but it’s a little bit thin underneath that.”

GWS has previously resisted strong attempts from Victorian clubs to land Tomlinson but the Giants could off-load him this year to ease pressure on their tight salary cap.

He is contracted to the Giants for a further two seasons.

GWS football manager Wayne Campbell would not comment.

The Saints have long been fans of Tomlinson who has enjoyed a career-best season in 2017, missing only one senior match for the year.

The No.9 draft pick modelled his game on Nick Riewoldt throughout in his draft year in 2011.

Tomlinson could help partner Carlisle and Brown in the Saints’ backline or add some marking power in the middle part of the ground following Riewoldt’s retirement.

The 91-gamer would help reinforce the Saints’ spine with the club again set to launch at a top-line midfield trade or free agency target at the of next season.

St Kilda has significant salary cap room after missing out on midfield trade targets Josh Kelly and Dustin Martin this year, and would likely try and entice Tomlinson with a long-term contract. West Coast’s Andrew Gaff is not up got trade, the Eagles confirmed.

Tomlinson’s manager, Nick Gieschen from TLA Worldwide, was unavailable for comment.

His best attribute is his kicking

I never really noticed it at the Bombers cause I just saw him as a decent mark but fmd he's impressed me so much this year.

Not only is a great kick but he can execute risky kicks and pull them off. Having a CHB/FB that is attacking like that is such a bonus.
I agree with whoever said he’s now our best player. Might be because Steven was injured. And he might be passed by Billings or Gresham or whoever in time, but right now he’s right in that conversation.

Mum will certainly bolster the wags.

To the person who said I missed the mark with Carlisle & said he is elite (then deleted the post).... Sorry, but Carlisle is a very good player but he is not anywhere near elite. Rance is elite, Michael Hurley is elite. Carlisle is not at that level
That may have been me. Still believe he is elite. Need a solid run at it this year but for a guy who hadn’t played for 12 months he looked mint. He is as good as Hurley no problems. Rance I will admit is better. But Jake is easily in the 10 best key position defenders in the league.

Oh come on lol.

I don't rate very many players at the Saints that high but Carlisle is one of the best in his position.

Harry Taylor in his prime sure was a gun but I don't think reputation aside I can ever think he was on a similar level to Carlisle. Once again he has/had a better tank so there's that but I think Carlisle is better then every other way, marking, kicking, decision making etc..

I would have him very comfortably equal to McGovern (a bit higher actually cause Jakey is a better kick as well). I can see May being a more imposing defender though.

My main "issue" with Jake is that he doesn't have much of a tank and he's got poor acceleration. He can run fast but doesn't to top speed very quickly.

For me:

Rance on his own

Hurley Tarrant
May, Carlisle, Haynes, Talia

McStay, Hamling, Liam Jones etc..
No way they are better sledgers than Jake!

Watts is popular at the Dees, & seeing a mate pushed out for a 21 yr old is likely to piss more than a few teammates off!
Add the fact he'll be the highest paid player, some egos are also copping a subtle hit..
Trout might get his man 3 years later..
How ironic if the Saints can get Petracca with pick 7, giving the Dees the 2 first rd picks to trade for Lever..
Even better as it was literally a free hit orchestrated by the best in the business..Ameet Bains............!!!
We can’t get Petracca for any combination of picks because he’s not on the table. That screenshot is a rubbish report. On to the next.

Petracca is the second coming of Leigh Matthews in the eyes of their supporters. If he was traded they would riot

WTF is with the Balic obsession on here? Kid has literally done nothing, and has a number of personal issues. He is pretty much worth nothing. Weller was a very good AFL footballer 12 months ago. Don' know why some are so quick to throw him on the junk heap.
Totally agree. Particularly on Weller. I was there at the prelim and was willing to offer up anyone with some sack to them (for a hefty value) then realised those same campaigners are actually very valuable.

Beady eyes man... it's the beady eyes.

Weller is a good player. Injury hindered him this year. At his best he is starting on the ground week in and out. Rewatch the geelong match last year or hawthorn game this year.

Trade both our first rounder for Tomlinson and a future first (and 2nd if ameet can milk everything from them). Next years draft is like 2001's superdraft where pick 20 would be like 8 this year.
Terry Wallace (who despite the knockers, is a pretty solid judge in this area) says that pick 1 this year is around pick 6 next year. This supports your comment

Completely agree. Maybe it was not well written. I like his mix of traits, quite a different player. Not a great year of course.

No idea where all this talk about giving up one of 7 or 8 for Tomlinson. He's not worth more than Steele was, no way we give up 7 or 8 unless something else significant comes back. I reckon a future second and maybe a 3rd rounder as well will get it done.
He is definitely worth more than Steele was.

Best 22, contracted and one of their established, good players.

could actually be a really good replacement for Roo, I really wouldn't mind Tomlinson for pick 8.

Would bargain a bit more tho, see if we can turn 8 into a later first round and a 2nd round pick just so we can pick 1 top 10 kid, and another kid who might fall through to a later pick
