A lot for people are forgetting we sacrificed our 2018 2nd too. We down graded it to Adelaide which is likely to be a 10-15 pick difference. I've noticed the afl sites media people are including it in their analysis nor is afl player ratings on twitter. I've responded to everyone who have someone how missed this one. Am I right? Or did we only throw away our 3rd and 4th rounders in 2018.

Our 2018 changes:

Out: 2018 2nd, 2018 3rd, 2018 4th.

In: 2018 2nd (Adelaide), 2018 2nd (western Bulldogs), 2018 4th (Geelong)

agreed but the trade we did for pick 16 was just brilliant and absolutely made up for that
pick 16 for 28, 30 and future second. thats 3 2nd round picks for pick 16.

i am struggling to work out how we could have ended with a better outcome out of that trade period. i mean kennedy for 28 and lang for 56, come on. 2 first rounders for gibbs turning 29 and an additional future second round pick to boot.also boosted our 3rd round this year to a second round. and only had to sacrifice our third round next year. only way if could have been better would have been to get rockliff, but in the long run that might be better for us as well. for afl.com to give us 6/10 is so weird. i cannot work that out. We are so well placed now its not funny, i truly believe we will be looking at the top 4 within 2 years, and a long sustained tilt at a flag into the 2020's.

Agreed. Bearing in mind the top 5 look really good this year, and the top 12 or so look great before it drops off sharply at 30 or so, the balance of the trades was:

Kept pick 3.
Upgraded pick 40 to pick 10.
Upgraded pick 58 to pick 30.
Got in Kennedy, Lang and Lobbe.
Upgraded next years 3rd rounder to a second rounder (Dogs pick 30 or so).

The key to all of that was trading Gibbs. Sad to see him go (I still feel a bit hollow) but we are really well placed this year and next in the final year of resetting.

I'm starting to form the view that we are largely set depth wise, and need to be on the lookout for genuine elite match winners. I say this because when you do a 'best 22 for 2018' you're squeezing out or making tough decisions on players like Cuners, Fisher, Macreadie, Lamb, Williamson and company already. That gives healthy competition for spots.

For mine though over the next 3 drafts, we need to be adding at least 1 Raynor ('17) and Rankine ('18) types if possible in each draft. Players that have a match-winning turn in them.

We can go for a more vanilla 'safe' mid with one of those 1sts this year, and maybe look for a more raw mid with a higher ceiling with the other 1st. They'll have 2 years to develop before it starts to really matter.

I'm also mindful of the fact that we have free agency next year (Lynch) and the year after (Shiel, Kelly) and with Gibbs and Palmers departure, and the likely retirements/ delistings of Lobbe, Simpson, Thomas, Rowe, ASOS, White, Smedts, and maybe Murphy (31 in July next year) over the next 2 years, will have a bucketload of cash to splash to address our three main glaring needs on our premiership horizon (elite mid or two, KPF, ruckman).

I think we're really well placed. We really need to nail those draft selections, and get some real elite talent through the door over the next 3 drafts and 2 trade periods though.

Its super vital we nail this draft and make that Gibbs trade really pay off for us. This is arguably one of the most important drafts in our recent history.

Thats what they're saying on the D+T boards. Top 4-6 (Raynor, LDU, Dow, Cerra, Brander, Brasyhaw) all look bona fide 200 gamers, and then the next half dozen (Coffield, Constable, Fogarty, Hayes, Bonar, Balta, arguably a few others) have shown enough to suggest many will be good players.

It drops off pretty sharply after the first round, with quality still to found through the second round. I reckon you'll even see some mature agers picked up at this point as well, with the Eagles grabbing a bunch of picks in the 20's and placing themselves in a strong postion to pick Schloithe (bloke that won the Sandover this year in the WAFL) before Carlton get to him at 30.

There probably wont be more than 60 or so live selections this year. Our pick 73 (looks like we're using it) will be among the last selections, long after most clubs have already bowed out.

Blues have earmarked Cam O'Shea as a rookie

Love SOS's work the last 3 years and he has done remarkable with trading this year (We have been waiting for a list manager like SOS for 20yrs). Though I would have preferred we have got Melbourne's 2018 1rd from Adelaide for the super draft instead of pick 10 or 16 and tried to keep our 2nd rounder which he probably tried all week for. The good thing with SOS he always has a plan with what he is doing with on trading picks. Now just nail this draft SOS and work some magic in 2018......

I think a first round pick from next year went out the door after they realised they wouldn't be getting our second rounder without us getting their's in return. If we had have acquiesced regarding our second rounder, we wouldn't have had a second selection in the top ten this year. We probably would have made the same trade with the Bulldogs, whether it was pick ten or sixteen. It would have left us in a better draft position for next year, with a first from Adelaide instead of their second, but without a second selection in the first round in 2017.

I would just rather see the club develop one of our own as our key forward, rather than commit to spending millions over 5,6,7 years to lure a Lynch or Boyd (going back a couple of years). If Charlie were to develop into the superstar some are predicting he will be, we might soon be in a position where we need those millions just to keep him at Carlton.
Speculation? Sure! But then these threads are all about speculation, aren't they?

I am not saying that it would be of no value to have a focal point in attack, or that Lynch isn't an outstanding player. Just that investing too much in one player - however good he may be - is potentially risky and limiting.
Developing a spread of potent goal kickers is still the wisest strategy for mine. But... I think that is what our people are going for, so it's not a startling piece of insight from me! ;)

I really cannot see SOS overpaying for Lynch.

The press have said Collingwood are going all out to get Lynch next year (supposedly) and STK and Richmond would likely follow. Every time a bidding war has broken out - SOS has walked away.

If we get Lynch, it will be on our terms because he likes what he sees onfield in 2018. We will pay a lot but it will not be Norf level stupid.

Alternatively, I see Kerr as having as much potential as grand final TF's like Xavier Richards, Tippett, Zane Cordy, Andy Otten, Tom Lynch, Jenkins, plus both Tex and Reiwoldt this year played average games.
