I think it's a little unfair to say he never bought into us, when it's been 100% media driven. He's done literally nothing himself (except the Freo scarf thing in 2013, when he wasn't really on our list) to ever suggest he's not an MFC man through and through.

Agree, I think the problem for Jesse has been his introverted nature (Hates media and always looks very uncomfortable doing it) and the rumors about Freo have been around since he joined the club.

I don't know if I could cop the prairies in winter. Just a few hours of neg 40 in Banff was enough for a lifetime.

Ya kinda get used to it. I rock a t-shirt an thongs in minus 10 sometimes but on the flip the heat always kills me.
Still the first campaigner to tan of every one here but.

So I'm wrong about Jesse: he bought into us 100%? He's Melbourne through and through? But now he's going back to Perth? o_O

I think you Jesse lovers saw what you wanted to see. I saw somebody who was filling in time waiting for his chance to go home, and now he's taking it. I'm on the record as saying that from very early on - and I copped a lot of flak for saying it. The vibe was never right with Jesse - which is why I'm cool with him leaving. The only thing that would make me say he was 100% Melbourne would be a press conference where he says he's signing a contract extension with the Dees, and he's staying put.

I'm a landscaper, so I had 4 more patio jobs booked for between 3 and 5k each, half of that goes to materials roughly then split profits with the business partner.
When there's snow on the ground business shuts for best part of 6 months and turns into snow removal which is **** all money and not often enough
Ah, damn. Do you get it back on the other end of Winter, or does early snow typically mean a long Winter?

So everyone's ok with him leaving? No vitriol? No Scully bags or anything?
Jesse's had godfather offers since day one and signed contract extensions with us before. Right now we've got two key forwards who seem to work better for us yet Hogan's value is still absolutely massive. Trading him now gives us a chance to acquire talent in areas we're deficient and balance our list before a crack at the next six flags.

Also I spent a few hours stalking Jesse irl this year, he's weirdly quiet. I don't buy into the "not invested" line at all, i just don't think he's very expressive or comfortable with cameras. Also feel he's being nudged out personally tbh.

I'm fine if he goes, I just want ripper value is all.

Last year was an extra long winter I'm hoping this year might finish up early but nah she's looking shit. Pretty much spend 6 months going to the gym now and losing the summer gut. I'm a bakers 6ft an around 93 kegs. Wanna bring that back to a tighter 88

He was probably always going to go home at some point. Never mind all the personal things that happened, he's just one of those dudes who likes the sun and surf and seems to prefer the quiet life. I had hoped he'd stay a few more years, but I suppose ultimately he's being allowed to leave now because its the opportune time for us to cut the cord as much as it is for him to head back home. Its probably been quite tough for him, missing some of our real key wins as a team. He missed the Essendon game in 2014, Geelong 2015, Hawthorn 2016, and then those four wins at the end of 2018 after an amazing season. Even more pertinent is that he was injured against Collingwood rd 23 2017 in the first quarter, but everyone seems to forget that. Had he stayed fit, the result may, maybe, might have been different.

Probably sums it up. I never got attached to him as a Melbourne player, so easy to see him go. As long as we get a nice deal out of it, there'll be no hard feelings from me.

Wouldn’t be the first person to change jobs or move cities because of his family situation. Hardly a reflection on his commitment to us in prior years. If anything it’s telling that he didn’t leave when his dad was first ill, there’s no way I’d have not gone home in the same circumstance.

So you're saying the fact that he didn't go home earlier actually demonstrated increased commitment to MFC? So, now that he's going, how would you rate his commitment to MFC?

I think it's more analogous to a Hollywood marriage: rumours of celebrity couple in trouble, the couple denies it and says they've never been more happy. Extra photos on FB and Insta showing the domestic bliss. 6 months later, they announce their separation, but say they leave with nothing but love in their hearts. It's a snow job. Jesse was never staying at Melbourne.

Let's say for some reason the deal can't get done with Freo, and he's forced to see out his contract with us: would you believe him if he then said he's 100% committed to Melbourne again?

We're not getting two top 10 picks outright for Jesse - people need to get that out of their heads.

Melbourne have been soft to deal with for years now and have payed overs in every deal i can remember; we lucked out with Hibb and Melk who were not the players they are now when we traded for them.

We'll pay over for May no doubt.

Would not surprise me one bit to see us losing Jesse for May straight.

Just look at Hawthron - traded pick 24 and some upgrades for Jack Gunston where as we roll over immediately and trade two first round picks for Jake Lever.

Be prepared.

Yes I'm starting to feel that way.

Reading this thread I'm starting to visualize a movie where topkent has to relive the same snow day for 18 years. In the movie the dees lose after the siren over and over again. And then throw in the other stuff piano lessons ice sculpture a love interest.

Not sure if anyone will be interested but thought I’d post it anyway. A friend of mine and I do a podcast called I Like The Cut of Your Jib. This week we interviewed national recruiting manager Jason Taylor and had a chat with him about what goes on behind the scenes in regards to recruiting. We didn’t probe him on trades in particular but more the processes he uses with players. Anyone interested, here’s the link:

This is absolute horse shit.
We lucked out because we correctly identified talented players we thought we could add to our team and then got deals done?

campaigners are way too obsessed with 'winning trades' as far as I'm concerned if you set out with a plan to get player x and you get him then who gives a shit if you pay a little extra.

Players and managers will nominate Melbourne full of confidence we will get the deal done.

i guess that is why Mahoney said he wants record trade value for Hogan.

Freo are desperate and have offered him $1.5m a year.

They are going to pay up

I agree with this... if we get may for pick 5 Ill be stoked. We would have the best backline in the comp with May there (who people here seem to under rate) and by the time he is 30 oscar will be ready to knock him off his perch after 3 more years in the gym

the way you talk about booze and birds I thought you must have been a ski instructor.

I channeled the movie hotdog in my mind and you’ve ruined it Rudy.

I always pictured Topkent as a ski instructor too. I still do - the landscaping stuff is a red herring. For me though I kept channeling a little-known, straight-to-DVD type movie called Aspen.

I once saw a gif of a pelican eat a duck. Haven’t liked them since. So I’d prefer to be called a goose, turkey or pheasant thanks.

Now let’s talk trade.

I agree to a certain degree, but there's still an objective element to it: if we end with only Hogan out and May in, then we've objectively lost, regardless of whether we got the player we set out to get. That's because Hogan is objectively worth (significantly) more than May.

I'm open to overpaying a bit (for example, if we ended up getting 5&6 or 5&10 for Hogan and traded pick 5 for May I'd say we've over-paid a bit, but that's ok), but not just paying hugely over because we wanted the particular player.

Because ultimately it's a competition and we're here to win. And so while we don't want to be a club that no-one wants to trade with, at the same time we don't want to be the easy beats that get nowhere near fair value for players. Otherwise clubs know they can raid our players and get great deals. We need to be aiming for win-wins where we come out slightly on top.
