I wouldn’t rule out Whiteman actually. Carey isn’t exactly young

Haha he's like six months older than Whiteman.

Whiteman has a better average and they're the same age.

Agreed neither are certainties. Point is we're building as strong a core and as good potential as we've had in a number of years IMO.

Yes but there is more to cricket than averages. I imagine Carey would have the better first class average if the parameters were shorter, since 2016 or so. Think Carey had a pretty slow start to his FC career.

It is good to see Whiteman get some continuity with his body and his batting again. Looked like the next big thing early in his career. Certainly a good chance of consideration if he backs up his recent season. Fair bit behind Carey who I think might've already been in the team if not for a certain captaincy ban.

Hard to say, the rain has had an impact on the ball and England, especially Archer, have bowled quite poorly.

350 would be par against let's say, India''s batting line-up but this is England. Anything above 300 and we're well on top.

I’d rather win this, then wrap it up. Jesus another rained out drawn test and it’s all on the line in the fifth. Don’t fancy our chances. No one is in form with the bat other then Labs and Smith.
Khawaja is such a shame. Great technique, good shot selection. Then he gets comfortable and anything outside of wide he wants to nick it. Competent player just mentally fragile.

Still it can be a tough place to take 20 wickets, england having to win at the oval to save the ashes wouldn't be the worst spot to be in, the big worry was/is england being all over us in this test due to the momentum shift at headingley and that would mean we need a win on a flat oval pitch so a rained out draw wouldn't be that bad a result it kills of their momentum and forces them to make the running in the last test.

Why didn’t we just keep rewarding Burns. Honestly. Been solid, got into some form for Australia.
Then as soon as the trio comes out of their ban, Bancroft plays barely any good knocks for Shield and he’s straight in. Langer has a chip that he wants to prove.
Warner is a talented batsman who can go hard, real hard, he can also bunker down if needed, batting him at 5 gives us options.

Just seemed to be universally accepted he would fail in england, that his spot was then taken by blokes who couldn't even score tons on our featherbeds didn't seem to matter.

Give me a flat track bully who actually makes tons over blokes who cant bully any test side on any deck.

Predicting across a series in ENG has often been problematic because the variable weather and relatively bowler-friendly conditions: 1) give objectively weaker sides a chance of being competitive or even snatching a test and 2) has a way of stopping sides from developing momentum.

What's so strong about the players you mentioned (aside from obviously Smith/Lab who're proven?)

Patterson is worse then anyone who's failed in this Ashes, Renshaw hasn't scored a run in what feels like years and Whiteman is basically starting again having not played Shield for a while before this year.

I hope there's some talent coming through but the people you mentioned aside from Pucovski are just more of the same.
Renshaw is still 23 and Patterson 24. Both have tons at Test level and that'pretthay hard to ignore. Head is also only 25 mind you.

Renshaw had a shocking FC season but just a year ago he was smashing County records.

Anyway point is Labsuchagne, Smith and hopefully Pucovski is looking like a pretty solid base we can build around. And there's plenty of talent to fill the holes.

Ha. That sort of mentality gotten Australia nowhere. Thought Burns had the form and ‘brownie points’ to prove it. Bancroft coming in just was an ignorant move.
But a lot of people discount the fact he is also a wicketkeeper. Think he should focus on that more. Don’t think his skill or craft is as effective though.

Didn't Whiteman average more than Carey last season?

6.07pm Mel Farrell: It's brightened up considerably. Some late afternoon sunshine.

Play has been abandoned for the day.

mmmk, for a board with so much wealth the english grounds seems to have rubbish covers and piss poor drainage.
