ARE WE THERE YET FFS

Oh, I see, we actually are there. Well good. Now let's get this garbage done with, checks notes, over 2 ****ing days.

Seriously?

The AFL are too self-important for words with this stuff.

Apparently the clubs have to wait 5 minutes before making their selection, I believe to increase the "drama".
So does that mean Gold Coast, having had months to figure it out, have to be seen to think furiously before making pick 1.
And then think again before pick 2?
Shows what an A grade **** knuckle Gill is.

i don't think its about 'increasing drama'. They are trying to turn it into a viable tv product, which makes perfect sense.

Plus if you go back and watch the videos from last years draft where live trades were happening there is often plenty going on in the 5 minutes.

i dont think adelaide will do that, because i doubt we take mcasey.

It would more be a team with multiple picks who think they can get to our pick and take mcasey, and take a mid later.

Also GC with 15, 20 and 11 next year could put a pretty tempting offer forward.

Hawthorns first this year and next year for 5+32. Then we flip 11 for 15+20 with Gold Coast. We end up with a future first and 3 picks in the first 25.

There’s a might there and we could easily miss both! You are valuing pure insides way too much. We can get inside mids in the second and third round.

Flanders or Kemp at 5

Happy to gamble a bit with Kemp. If they recon he’s right, on talent he’s a top 3-4 pick.

I expect Flanders at 5 and I’ll be over the moon
Agreed. If he hadn't done his knee, we would not be in a position to select him at 5. He represents with his ACL high risk - a high bust or high reward. Roll the dice i say.

Rehab for most of 2020. A few games in NEAFL. 2021 he plays more time and pushes his way into the top side in the last 7-8 games and then goes back home at year end when his contract expires.

The thing that binds a kid to a club to prevent go home is the team culture but also his personal success within team performance. If he lags because of rehab I believe there will be greater risk of go home.

Would love to get a top 3 player for a bargain BUT his rehab represents a huge risk on many fronts. Do you take that risk? Most teams didn’t with Sidney Stack and Richmond did get a bargain. Our own Durak Tucker the other extreme....different quality of course but you get the idea. I think risk/ return trade off suggests he has a place probably around the 12-14 pick IMO. We are at 5

You are probably right to see it this way and my head is swayed by what you have to say. Given the problem you have presented with rehab for newbies I wonder whether there is any benefit in young rehab players being offered real jobs in the coaches box during games to nurture a different cultural pathway to become an invested blood?

Whoever we draft in the first round, I think we should take the Melbourne approach. Hype them up to ridiculous levels, heap totally unrealistic expectations on them and expect them to turn the club's fortunes around singlehandedly. That seemed to work out great for the Demons.

If you’ve taken the time and energy to produce a list as deep as pick 20 then I for one would like to see it. Am sure others would too.

It’s not much different to the others out there and we’ve all seen Snoop and Knightmare, Only difference in the top 10 is I have Young on the lower side of the 10.

Draft central seems to indicate he’s consistent without being truly outstanding.

Yes but re-read the by-line they put on him (below). What the actual? What else is there to be good at? Won S.A.'s best player at the Championships.

"A strong and hard working inside midfielder who is a classy ball user, who excels in clearance work and is a high possession winner."

Absolutely want this kid. If we don't move up to get Cooper Stephens in high teens then we need to move up a little to make sure we get this guy. Got a feeling he goes just before our pick as it stands.

This kid waaaay over Elijah Taylor please. Save Taylor hit-or-miss types for our third pick.

From all reports he’ll almost be good to go round 1 anyway so NEAFL for half a year and a debut after the bye.

Flanders my top pick though

Yes I don't see him missing most of 2020 like some in the media claim as he did his knee in June or July, and it is usually a 9 to 12 month recovery time so he could easily be playing NEAFL games early in the season.

Just don't want to hear the words "And yet again the Swans have made the first surprise pick of the draft at 5 with ..."

Have some trust in your club. Listening to Beatson, he reinforced how much better at player selection interstate clubs need to be in order to identify personalities that may stay at the club without wanting to go home.

I see nothing but one of the most professional sporting teams in the land in the Swans. Call it rose coloured glasses if you like but it is a well shared feeling in the sporting world. We are a well run club from top to bottom so I never understand the fear shown by Swan supporters. We'll pick who we think will best represent the club in the direction we wish to take it, knowing that to the best of our ability, it will be a good person who will be a leader of the club going forward & who will perhaps be a one club player for his entire career.

No guarantees, but if people on here are demanding that we 100% nail it, then you are being harsh as all clubs are guilty of stuffing this up far worse than we ever have & our picks in the top 6 have been few & far between.
One thing is for sure, we are the masters at nailing our rookie picks & turning them into some of the best footballers our club has ever had.
I trust the club to have a good crack at this draft & what happens, happens.

Wow that is amazing recovery. If he is that far forward then it becomes much more viable. I guess if he did it in July he has had 5 months rehab already.

Would be in the 8-9 month range from injury. Even if we go conservative and say he doesn’t play till day round 5-8, could easily play a few at back end. You don’t draft players on what they’d do next year.

The concern though is not the recovery time this time, but rather his increased chances of doing another ACL. If I was sure he would never do an ACL again then not seeing him play in 2020 would not bother me at all.

The fear is very justified as other than the academy picks the Swans do not have a good history over the past 20 years of nailing first round draft selections.

I think most of us can agree draft day on the Sydney Swans big footy board is no place for measured reflection. ;)
Please consider self-modding this outrageous example of non-hyperbole.

Least Darymple is taking this first rounder.

I might have a slight preference for Stephens but choosing "best available" as our first pick is a sound policy. Can't see why we wouldn't bid on Green if he was seen as the best available come our pick. When matched, if we select Flanders because he is regarded as next best.....I'd be happy with that.

Have him second on my list, I’d rather trade back in towards the back end (say pick 14 or so).

Should take Flanders at pick 5.

I’m not fussed whether we bid or not. We aren’t getting him. Let someone else bid.

For the record my preference is:

1. Flanders
2. Kemp
3. Cooper Stephens
4. Dylan Stephens
5. Caleb Serong
6. Jeremy Sharp ( hope he’s the one at our second)

If Kemp's rehab is successful and he is believed to be probably playing footy come round one - yet you prefer the selection of Flanders, what do you see as Flanders' upside for the Swans by comparison to what Kemp might contribute?
