Reckon you should go have another look at Serong, he has seriously good acceleration from the contest, I'm not convinced he's all that inferior to Rowell as a midfielder given they're of similar height and he most certainly has more strings to his bow with his leap and strength overhead to go with his outstanding forward craft.

Go back and watch last year's NAB AFL All Stars game between Team Bartel and Team Riewoldt, he and Rowell were absolute standouts in that game.

Cooper Stephens the forgotten player in this draft was pretty good in that game too, and covers our need for a "big bodied mid" as well. 2nd or 3rd pick please. ;):fire:
Not saying he’s slow by any means and he’s definitely got that forward craft string to his bow , I’m a big fan

It’s just whether he’s our type for this particular draft vs ash and the like

He may be great but how many small mids is too many?
I wasn't aware he was the only mid in this draft.....and btw there's not too many "bigger" mids in this draft that have the talent required that will be available to us.

Maybe because a lot of those scribes don't see as much of the country lads as they do the likes of Anderson and Rowell, that and the fact the bulk of the media fanfare has been based around those 2 mostly.

Caleb Serong an AFL draft prospect with ‘no flaws’, say experts

Shifter Sheahan's words : Note, not the player comparison I'd use....Toby Greene for me.

“I liken him to Tom Papley,” AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan said.

“He’s clean, he’s a great kick, works hard through the midfield on the inside and the outside. He’s a goalkicker as well and such a consistent player in the big games.

“He’s got a low centre of gravity, he’s powerfully-built, quick, strong overhead for his 178cm height and just has no flaws in his make-up.”
fair enough. Having said all that, if you had to rank the 4 of them in order on who you would pick, - Rowell, Anderson, Serong, Ash would serong or Ash be breaking into your top 2. Just really trying to get my head around whether it is better to hold our pick and go high or maybe better to split it / trade for a player we want

Did I say he was the only mid in this draft? Not sure what you’re one about.

We have 3rd or 4th pick, hopefully we find a player that suits our needs.

And don’t take offence but the way you react when anyone makes a comment on one your draftee faves can be a bit tiring

1. Anderson
2. Serong/Ash sorry difficult to split them.
4. Rowell

Rowell 4 because I see him as a pure mid, a very, very good one but for mine the others have more strings to their bow.

Thanks for that. It gives some of us confidence that we can nail it at pick 4 even if if GC get a PP and maybe it is better that we don't trade our pick unless it is a really good deal. It also makes me think that it would not be worth the expense of trying to trade up to pick 2

We have 3 picks to address your size want in mids with Anderson gone that leaves Brodie Kemp recovering from an ACL, Tom Green GWS Academy and Finn Maginnes Hawks F/S as the bigger mids in 1st round contention that I'm aware of anyhow. Hayden Young is 188cm but I'm far from convinced his best position is going to be midfield. All the rest of the proven mids likely to go 1st round are around 180 - 184 cm so not much different to what we've got already.

The crows need better kicking and more aggressive ball use out of the backline. So if thing stay the way they are i like they look of hayden young who could develop into a good outside midfielder. I'd also like to trade up our seconds to get dylan stephens on the wing.

Well, he's an inch shorter. Same height as Marc Murphy though.
Caleb Serong - 178cm - 83kg
Matt Rowell - 178cm - 75kg

As far as midfielders go there is only really two Marcus Bontompelli/Nat Fyfe types at the top end both size wise and athletically Noah Anderson and Brodie Kemp, with Kemp's unfortunate ACL injury it will be interesting to see if we are willing to take the risk anf pounce early.

Speaking of slightly undersized players for their position. Have you heard much on Luke Jackson? I heard some draft pundits criticism on him was him being “non optimal AFL ruck size”. Think it might have been on road to draft a while back.

At 198cm I guess he’s not a giant, but do you still think he deserves the “best ruck in the draft” tag that he’s seemingly got based on mock drafts?

If we want a young developing ruckman/forward my choice would be the very athletically gifted Gippsland Power lad Charlie Comben who probably has as much upside as any player in this draft....reckon around our 3rd pick would nab him or perhaps even a little later pick if we pick up one through a trade. Have to say I'm not as sold on Himmelberg going forward as some others and Hunter is a list clogger IMO.

Pretty much every article has Rowell at 180cm.

It's not much difference, though.

He was 178cm at the pre-season NAB League measurings and that won't change until the National Combine where the players are measured again.

I have to say personally that's the only time I've seen his height as 180cm anywhere.

I highly doubt the AFL's draft head Cal Twomey would not have that info at his fingertips, this article last month.
