There still remains a remote possibility that Carlton and Gold Coast come up with a face saving pick swap and GC retract their offer to Martin and delist him before Oct 31.

That way he can join us directly as a DFA.

Unless the club was supremely confident that Jack was a financial certainty to get through to us in the PSD for nothing, they may opt to come up with an agreement.

How do we rate our under 22’s going into Season 2020?

Top 8-9 are ‘best 22’ with one or two more capable of joining them by this time next year.

Should we have tried to find a home for Macreadie during the trade period? I just don't see a spot for him in the near future.

No.

I have my doubts as to his long-term future but:

- He's 21 years old
- He's nearly 2 metres tall
- He's contracted through to the end of 2020
- He had a whole season wiped out through injury

Clearly we rate the kid, so what's the point of moving him on whilst still under contract? It's not as if he's taking up much salary, and we certainly wouldn't get anything of value on the trade table.

He may be in trouble come the end of next season but there's no reason not to let him see out the remainder of his contract.

Until the 31st October?
1 more year, Martin becomes a RFA end of next year. He seems pretty keen to get out of there now but staying for a further 12 months is an option GC would be hoping for. They'd be talking to him about that at the moment. But taking him against his will in the preseason draft would leave themselves open to a lot of criticism so I can't see that happening (plus they'd have to give him a 2 year contract in that case). I think you either get him now in the preseason draft or in 1 years time as a RFA.

I get the impression Deluca may not have much of a tank from watching him this year in terms of AFL midfielder level. I can see how it may be difficult for him to get opportunity in 2020 but perhaps we are using this to motivate him to work hard on this and perhaps if he can meet a certain level in his fitness testing he may get picked back up again. In saying that it may simply get to the period in the draft where it is best available and if he is best available we pick him up, if not someone else.

He is out of contract this year as a non free agent.

Can't see him staying at the GC for a further 12 months.

Correct me if I am wrong Greek Goddess, but ain't players picked up in the PSD given an automatic 2 year contract (happy to be proven wrong)

How do we rate our under 22’s going into Season 2020?:

In my opinion:

Best 22: SPS, Weitering, Walsh, Setterfield, McKay, L’Ob

(Players 23-28 on list ... first in after injury / form ... or Martin if we get him takes the spot of ... ):
Fisher, Dow, Stocker, Williamson, JSOS

Depth: Macreadie, TDK, Polson, BSOS, P’Dwyer, Cottrell

Could play starting 22 in most Clubs (imo) are

Definately: Weitering / Walsh
Sometimes: SPS / Mckay
Developing Depth: Setterfield/Fisher/Dow/Stocker/TDK/LoB/JSOS
VFL : BSOS/McCreadie/Owies/Polson/Cottrell
Who Knows: Williamson

So this pre-season and next year will be very intersting with a fair bit of pressure to lift performance on: Fisher/Dow/LoB/JSOS in particular I would think based on performance in 2019 - because Simpson/Murphy/Kreuzer/Ed aren't getting any younger - 4 genuine quality starting players needing to be replaced over 1-3years.

I have been thinking for a while and I reckon that each team should have a seconds team who plays curtain raisers.

Total list size should be 55 (2.5 teams).

Players who can't make the seconds team can play in an affiliate VFL size.

The last 11 can be rookies if you like, only able to play AFL as LTI replacements.

Would certainly give a lot more second tier guns a chance to make the breakthrough

and the curtain raiser setup would mean that emergency “firsts” players wouldn’t miss out in playing that week when the firsts are travelling some distance - a major flaw when these players are trying to break into the big team.

What would be the type of trade that would make them both happy ?

Unconvinced Dow or Fisher are best 22 players, now or long term. I would sooner play Stocker ahead of both of them.

Would not be surprised if Stocker is a real bolter, out of all our midfield types drafted in this rebuild I like him the best in many ways. Most of our young players have talent, they just need to add a physical aspect to their game. If we play a hard physical brand of footy next season we're going to go a long way but that's hard with a young team.

I think it would need to be a trade that is slightly weighted in GCs favour, purely for Cochran to stroke his ego and claim it as a small victory:

e.g -2020 second for their 2020 fourth and fifth round picks

This is a possibility. I think the AFLPA may get into their ear and put a bit of pressure on them.
Part of me hopes this happens but I also want those idiots at Gold Coast to lose him for nothing.
