For everyone stating Sloane out was unfathomable, remember we had to give him 5 years out to 33 to keep him, we’ve just paid out 2 contracts for long term deals but we moved out 2 players because we wouldn’t give them contracts to 31.

Anyway... I know that trading our a player like Sloane is a taboo subject here.... I was exactly the same at the time.... happy that we signed him for emotional reasons, but I did feel it wasn’t smart and was quietly hoping it went the other way.

for all those playing the loyalty card....he held us to ransom to a 5 year deal that keeps him here till he is 33....yeah we would have been pricks to say no to that.... keep telling yourselves that... would he have stayed if he got the big offer that was rumoured for him before he did his lifransic and when Belinda was going to be the next shit hot thing on channel 7... I think loyalty has gone one way with our club and our pla

for those playing the heart and soul card.... just be a bit honest in your judgments of him... he hasn’t been the same player since he started to get tagged in 2017... he still puts in the odd good game and in a team that finished 12th two years in a row hedoes poll relatively high in our b and f..., but we have been a very ordinary side for the last two years so he isn’t polling ahead of guys in very good form.... Rory is a pretty overrated player if you go on his most recent 2 years of footy... and it’s pretty one-eyed thinking to be condfident that he is going to turn all that around at 30, as opposed to his best footy being well and truly behind him...

i do love Rory.... one of my favourite crows to pull on the guernsey... but like the Hawks did with Mitchell, Hodge and Lewis, there is nothing wrong with making decisions for the betterment of the clubs

anyway enough from me on Rory... you might figure out I’m secretly a troll from another club if I keep going on like this ;)

I think you may need to look at Atkins, MacKay, Hartigan and I’ll even throw in Seedsman fore you start looking at Sloane

none of those blokes would have got us pick 8. I reckon Hamish might have taken Clarke, but otherwise Hately or Caldwell. It’s more that pick than the contract we gave him.

but anyway... it’s history now

Geelong have 14 and 17, but that's not enough for 4. What if they upgraded another of our picks?

I would want their 2020 1st as well.

14 & 17 for a player they are hanging desperately for, I would say no way. Make the bastards pay for him.

Why help Geelong again? Just take their man instead.

This is where Haggis takes over, up to him.

For example, if Geelong are desperate for Flanders...

Geelong give: 14, 17, 24

Adelaide give: 4, 45

Leaves us with 14, 17, 23, 24, 28, 37

6 inside 37, maybe that's making the best of a shit situation.

Mediocre talent? No thanks.

Who do you think we will take at 14 and 17 if we did this deal?

Those picks will also push out with academy/ FS bid matching. It’s not worth trading pick 4 for those picks your talking about. Take one elite kid and let Hamish do the rest with the picks we have.

If we can bundle those two picks in the 40s to improve some of those earlier picks, I’d be keen for us to do that and upgrade Murphy and/or Butts.

Probably, a player of Rorys quality would have had that offer on the table from a Saints, North, Carlton etc, even with a lisfranic. Remember loyalty has little to do with player negotiations, both ways.

He asked for it, and we decided he was worthwhile keeping seeing at the time we had a list that was in contention, I'm honestly fine with paying for Sloane. It was part of the gamble that 2017-2021 were our years. After all, the worst part was if we fall apart we still have a high-quality player to guide and for youngsters to model off and be a leader, which you do need them around the club if you want to avoid the pits of an eternal rebuild.

If Sloane wants to go on past 33, sure, give him the Mitchell/Hodge treatment, that contract though was well worth the risk at the time.

If you're actively not going to sign one of your key players to a contract, you need a damn good plan as to how you're going to counteract it. Not resigning Sloane would have done the exact same damage to our premiership hopes as the camp/and the whole kerfuffle after that did as you've put more stress on a weaker area. We didn't have a talent to take over the number 1 midfield spot seeing Brouch is too much of a risk, we needed to strengthen the midfield as is, and at the time we weren't in a crisis.

It's a much different barrel of fish to bit-part players like Keath, and Greenwood where the question is just - are they worth the money and how easy they are to replace?

Gross.

Turning 4 into 14 + 17 completely undoes the work of turning 9 + 19 into 4.
