I feel like we need to sit the new boys in front of some port game highlights. Tell them to go one step better than those boys. Put big Cox in the weight room and give him some tats and tell him to grow his beard. We’ve got a better back line and our maturing mids are awesome. Quick turn around for the pies!!

I think we did pretty well overall and, despite trading out a future first and a future second round pick, we still managed to trade back into the third round which could leave us with 1700-1800 points depending where we, Freo and Adelaide end up on the ladder next year.

We probably need to look at another KPF (Baldwin, Callow or even Kolar) and maybe another small crumbing pressure forward in the rookie draft, as McCreery is more medium forward size-wise than a small forward.

If we're going to grab another tall I'd prefer we look at a KPD capable option. The VFL side could already potentially end up with Lynch/Cameron, Tohill, Kelly, and McMahon squeezed inside F50. Add any more and I'd worry for their development. Defence on the other hand is pretty light on outside of Keane. I suppose Kelly gives us some flexibility.

EDIT: May allow us to look at someone like Baldwin I suppose who you'd imagine will take time in 2021 to get back to competitive footy. Kid was rated the best KPF before his knees so could be worth a punt. Toward the end of 2021 we'd know about Lynch, Tohill and Cameron and whether they'd likely be retained.

Wow what a night.

Absolutely stoked with our haul. Four players below value, and then a couple of needs, definitely an A+ without a doubt. This is a haul you can build a team around.

I was gonna say, if you're a belly sleeper I don't think you'd have been able to lay in bed last night 😂

I don't like our chances of nabbing a decent KPF in the rookie draft. I'd like us to target one more small forward and a KPD. They're needs and a more likely player type to find this late. But then again this is the year that you might find a gem.

Baldwin, Callow, Kolar and Treacy are all there waiting to be picked up.

There are probably reasons why each of them haven't been taken yet - ie. Baldwin still recovering from 2nd ACL injury back in June, Callow possibly lacking some athleticism, Kolar being a recent soccer convert and Treacy projecting more as a tall midfielder in 2020 with his ability at ground level - but that's not to say they aren't worth considering as a rookie pick up.

I don't know how many more KPD types there might be available either, as most of the more highly rated kids who didn't get picked up early appeared to have gone late or were NGA selections.

Like many, I'm really happy with the night and excited to see so much youth coming through the doors.

I don't think it's a "dream result", as no doubt we would have liked one of those highly rated talls. I was more hoping we'd use our future 1st to jump into the top 10, but then again none of the talls lasted past Essendon's pick anyway.

I'm a bit 50/50 on our trade to move our future 1st. In the end, we get 3 more kids...and Poulter looks a good get. But McMahon and McReery are very speculative picks and relatively unknown commodities. So it's a big sacrifice to have made. I also reckon those picks may have been available with our much later picks....so not sure we needed to move our future 1st. But time will tell on that decision. I just reckon it weakens us from a trade perspective next year, to ultimately grab a few late picks in a questionable draft.

There's still a few more opportunities, but we haven't really addressed our lack of key position defenders. Lord help us if Roughie breaks down next year. And we've only really brought in a project key tall to address our lack of KPFs. We continue to draft kids in the 186-192cm range. So the list is a bit congested on that front.

But when you have picks from 17 onwards...you have to take the best kids that slip through...and we've done that. Really excited by getting Macrae, Henry and Reef as first rounders. It really adds depth and excitement in that forward/mid area.

It also seems we have picked a lot of bottom agers. So there still might be a few cms to be added to some of these kids which might make them genuine key position height. Overall, it's just exciting to see a new look to the list, as it has had a very "same/same" feel about it over the years.

If some of these kids start pushing out guys like Thomas, Mayne and WHE etc, then it's a huge leap forward....and it gives me a similar feel to 2010 when we had been finals bound for so many years, but it was the moving on of guys like O'Bree, Lockyer, Fraser and Medhurst that saw us take the next step.

I got into bed about 2am, it was a long day haha. We're doing content for the Rookie Draft today, so was back in at work by 8am. I go on annual leave at the end of tomorrow, so there's that.

Ironic that the BF draft where I picked Ford and Angwin in the BF draft they almost went the opposite. Which just about sums up 2020. No one got the top three, which is remarkable, but also fun.

I actually thought we might have a crack at Callow when we got to the McCreery pick. We did get McMahon but we can afford to take Callow, and he'd be my pick of the KPFs, though at a rookie spot, Baldwin is a low-risk high-reward pick there, clearly a Top 10 talent on pure ability.

Jack Ginnivan is one I think is worth going for as one of my top picks yet to be taken.

It’s just a little bit of fun harking back to a discussion from yesterday afternoon. A hypothetical was raised about GWS bidding on Reef with their first pick and us then trading with them immediately after the bid once the garbage picks we had were exhausted. Things wound up a bit heated between me and partypie so I was pretty stoked for it to literally play out according to my assessment of things (albeit later picks) with no concerns over draft tampering. Although it does make you wonder whether there was some collusion between GWS and Collingwood...
Are you suggesting they didn't bid on him earlier, because we previously agreed that we'd do this trade?

Beat me to it 😜

Yeah, I'm not going on knowledge of this group, just on previous history. In this group there could be an anomaly.

119 goals in a season, even as a 12-13 year old, shows the kid knows how to kick them too 😁

Who you keen to rookie? I’d like us to try callow or Kolar. added KPP depth on rookie list. Leaves us with decent depth and options at both ends

I don't mind Kolar because he's shown he can play at either end. With Moore, Checkers and Kelly having that same capacity it gives us some flexibility

probably... has that type of rep by the sounds

It feels like a 6 circles thing - someone pisses in a team mate's lemon lime cruiser, that someone ends up being traded to another team, new team hires former team mate's dad as new coach, new coach drafts a slider who may have pissed in someone else's vodka mixer prior.

Thanks Sco, as you said I raised a hypothetical, it can only be collusion if it can be proved, which could only be done if entire conversations between teams are recorded. I suspect it is often done but almost impossible to prove.

I think the suggestion is that we may have arranged the trade with GWS, but asked them to bid on Reef before putting the trade through, which meant there was no risk in those picks we traded in from GWS getting eaten up by a bid. It’s sketchy, but with the way it played out I’m almost certain that it happened that way.

For me this is tonight was the final event in the disaster that was our 2020 off season. We have developed a very unbalanced list and as we shed more of our elite talent in the next few seasons we have little quality coming through the ranks. Our drafting from 2015 onwards, now 6 drafts, has been a mess

Left on our list from after 2014 we have the following draft picks (from the main draft)
2015 32
2016 35, 59
2017 39,50,
2018 13, 29
2019 40,45,55
2020 17,19,22,30,31,44

We now have 18 players out of a list of 40 who have less than 44 games of experience between them. (10 player 0 games, 3 players 1 game, 1 player 2 games, 1 4 games, 1 nine, 1 eleven and 1 fifteen.) All our 6 top 10 picks on the list comes from 2014 or before. It will be amazing drafting from Hine if this list turns into a good one in the seasons ahead. He is basically playing a poker game with no access to the picture cards. Very hard to win

This isn't a knock on the 9 kids we have drafted in 19/20. None of us can really tell if any of them make it. I like the look of Henry and Macrae in particular but I am just guessing like most of us. Truth still is we shipped out A grade talent a few weeks ago and on numbers will struggle to replace that. List very unbalanced now for mine.

We are massively into free agency next season.

Not sure who yet.

Oh definitely we are. I wonder about what position we might target. The talk seems to be guys like Merrett and Kelly. We just drafted three mids to go with two from last year. On a needs basis key forward should be a priority so it makes me wonder if thats the way we go, and if so who dobwe have in mind?
