The sticking point will be Wines. From what I know, they rate Hately a lot. Wines would free them up with both salary and picks

I assume we both rate Hately highly.

That said, there is no guarantee Wines leaves. Whilst there is some smoke, he's not out of contract, not until 2022.

Still, due to our situation, we would still be able to out-offer Port + a guaranteed best 22 spot + there might already be an established relationship between Hately and Nicks. That said, we are quite toxic right now.

Theoretically, if we got pick 7/8 from GWS. Would we do a straight swap for Hately?

Unless Gollant beefs up a lot in the next year, we're really needing that big body/contested midfielder. The crouch bro's just aren't working at the moment.
O'Connor is probably the mid on the list now that fits the bill in that regard. Haven't heard much about how he's travelling to date though

It would never happen, but imagine if the Crows and Suns worked together with them taking Brad on a big contract, netting us pick 2, then we trade picks 1 and 2 for Lukosius and Rankine.
I think we need to forget about those 2. I can't see them coming home any time soon

Boner did two ACL’s.. and GWS took him at pick 11 if I recall..

Not that that worked out for them!... but he hasnt done another yet either...

Big risk... but if the kid has the talent..
Bonar was back playing for the Dandenong Stingrays in the back half of that season and killing it with his freakish athleticism on full display showing he'd come back from his recos in top shape with no agility issues whatsoever and was ready to go straight into his 1st pre-season with no lingering issues. That is not the case with Kaine Baldwin, not even close.

Knightmare had Darcy Chirgwin going at 36 to Sydney but he went undrafted. I believe he's back at the Sandy Dragons as an overager so it will be interesting to see how he goes when footy resumes now he's fully recovered from a long term injury that saw him miss a big chunk of his draft year. Speculative pick/rookie

  • 36. Sydney - Darcy Chirgwin (VIC)
    Height, Weight:
    191cm/80kg
Profile: Ball winning midfielder who does his best work at stoppages. Wins a high proportion of his ball contested and is a strong tackler.

I'm getting to a place where i'm less and less excited about the perennial 'Luko and Rankine' trade scenario. It just seems like a unicorn at this point!

Would be massively overpaying for them. Rankine has shown nothing at AFL level and is constantly injured. Luko has shown less than the King brothers

Very easy actually, a mid that generally only gets a game when their proven guns are out injured is not a Pick 7.
What do you reacon he’s worth Mutineer?..

I agree that pick 7 would be too much.. even though he was taken in the first round in a draft year that was stacked to the hilt with great draft prospects..

Would something like pick 15 and above be worth it?... or 20 and up?..

He does look like he has some great potential when he does get a game and you can understand why he’s not getting consistant games when you look at GWS’s mid stocks!..

Let me put this scenario to you.

The virus in Victoria means we don't get a full season of AFL. There is an even more condensed version and a shortened finals.

The AFL then turn their attention to the draft. Clubs start pushing for a lottery style draft as the competition was too compromised to rely on ladder positions. The AFL look at the Crows, who would have pick 1, but are not happy.

So, the AFL come to the Crows. They lay down the long list of poor errors, including the Camp and the Barossa. They tell the club that if they are to get pick 1, they need to get their act together.

So in return for keeping pick 1, they demand the following;

  • Crows must turn over the board.
  • Chapman and Roo must leave.
  • A new Chairperson, from outside the current board, must be appointed.
  • They must also appoint an external group to review the off field structure of the Crows, with an agreement that they will implement recommendations.

What does Chapman do? Would he step aside and take Roo with him, to ensure the Crows keep pick 1 (and a bonus of generous judgement of B Crouch's Free Agent compensation)?

On one hand I'd be pissed that the AFL want to influence how the club is run. On the other hand, change must happen and if this is the way to get them out, then so be it.

Regardless, I think Chapman would suggest we take pick 10 instead, just so he can stay on as his input is very vital to the clubs future.

Thoughts?

Why would the Suns do that?

There’s no one in this draft, of the class of Lukosius and Rankine, and it just puts their rebuild back further.

Nor are Lukosius and Rankine wanting out of the Suns.

I would be surprised if Hately or anyone else would be nominating us as their preference for the next couple of years. Once there is some sign of improvement that may change but for now we are right at the beginning of the long rebuild.

Hold on, why wouldn't we have any capspace? I still don't understand how we are currently paying our 95% TPI, even with half of JJ and Betts salary on the books.

And that doesn't even account for the inevitable 2020 offseason list cull.

Dare I say it we could well have the North Melbourne Warchest by the start of tradeweek
Nah. We will still be paying Tex, Gibbs, JJ. The Luke Brown extension proves JR still hasn’t learned.

Remember Roo saying if we had matched Keath’s offer then other players would have been forced out?

It's not uncommon for a struggling club to attract players. Look at how many GWS rejects Carlton got as an example, and in terms of terrible clubs, well, that was the terrible club of the 2010s.

We can offer money, and we can offer the opportunity to have an easy path into the best 22. That might just be enough for a talented player who is struggling to break into a good side to jump ship.

Yeah I guess money can make some guys do crazy things! I think if we are starting to show signs of improvement next year then we may be able to start attracting some better players over for the 2022 season.

Hately isn't going to cost that.

A player that they don't play and can't afford to re-sign doesn't end up costing you more. The list of recent draftees who are traded for MORE than they cost in the draft is really limited.

It would be a very GWS move to sell one (or more) of those guys off for a kings ransom and restock the shed with young talent.

No it's not.

GWS have consistently traded out young players for less than they spent on them in the draft.

Adams, Treloar, Shiel and Smith were good deals. Marchbank, Setterfield, Steele, McCarthy, O'Rourke, Jaksch, Pickett, Ahern, Plowman, Bruce, Tyson and others were all traded for pennies in the dollar (which, for some of these high picks, was still more than they were worth).

That GWS used an early pick on a player whom they don't play doesn't mean they'll necessarily get one in return.
