Training 2020 Pre Season Training

Just flicked through the last 60 pages to catch up... I wish we had a separate no discussion thread, would have been great to read the 5-10 relevant posts :D

Has Fog been injured much this pre season? Reason I ask is he didn't play in a practice game that someone reported going to on this thread and then he also missed the first pre season game. Might have just been a minor one as there was probably only a couple of weeks between the two games, hopefully he's firing though.
Played very well in the second half. If we can deliver the ball to him he’s going to have a big year. Give him 6 kicks in the forward line a game and he’s good for at least 3 goals a game

Just managed to flick through that thread as well, good to see his up and about again.

Hope he plays every game he's physically able to this year, he's a natural talent.

Please provide the list of coaches who were at the top of their game and said, I think I have had enough. Arguably Leigh Matthews but he had a choice of continuing to coach or taking up a very lucrative, low stress job in the media.

If we are going to dismiss the views of coaches who have been sacked/not reappointed then we are going to be able to hold the press conference in a phone box.

Constant - coaches get sacked
Variable - coaches win flags

Simple concept.
Hint: it's the second bit that is the important one.

I'm looking forward to seeing just how far FOG can kick this season. We've seen him bang 50m+ goals through post high a few times. I think he could realistically slot it from 65 on the run. Maybe 60 with a set shot!

I don't say this about many players, but I think its pretty much essential to play him in every game he's fit for, regardless of form. He's in all likelihood going to go through patches of amazing form, followed by fairly lean spells that could last upwards of 4-6 games.

But what most important for him is to know the new regime is behind him no matter what. He's at the stage of his development now that really he should be looking to take the mantle of best player in our forward line. And potentially in a few years, could be the best player on the team.

I agree in most parts, I’m not familiar with the type of fella he is,having a quiet period at this level and given his age trying to work through that could knock his confidence around a bit, a chat and a game or two back at the 2s is ok, otherwise go for it

Atkins whilst he can frustrate us massively at times he is actually one of the most talented players on our list.....anyone that says he's a total fu**in spud of epic proportions clearly has no fu**in idea to use their words..
This is probably why no1 else was keen and we got him at pick 81. His skill was never a concern more his attitude, Atkins was booted from the AFLs Elite Junior Academy for poor work ethic and was still tipped as a top 35 pick. I think you are right he has a tonne of talent but he only does enough to get picked every week instead of striving to be the best he can. Looks like a gun with 30 touches 1 or 2 times a year but then almost always follows it up with 14 or 15 touches the next week.
"I think I just got kicked out because I was young and didn't know what I had to do or what the process was to stay in that kind of elite level."

I hope someone has told him how to stay at the elite level by now and also hope it wasnt David McKay!

Why? Mackay has stayed at the elite level by virtue of having exemplary training standards, a flawless work ethic, and consistent two-way running - all of which are things which Atkins desperately needs to learn. For all his flaws (and Mackay has many), his strengths are things which Atkins would do well to learn from.

Atkins has played 90 games now and is 25.

He’s been through that part of his career where players are often inconsistent. The 100 game mark is generally that watershed achievement where we expect much more consistent output.

I think he’s got himself through the worst and there’s been no denying his talent along the way.

That said, I think this is a make or break year. I think he either kicks on to become a valued mid/wing - or he will be moved on.

I've actually got a bit of a itch I can't seem to scratch when it comes to Atkins. Actually its not so much Rory himself, but the entire concept of outside mids on the Crows in general. And it all boils down to 1 simple question.

When we the last time this team had an Elite outside mid? Hell, when was the last time we had even a very good outside mid?

I literally can not remember even having an AA caliber outside midfielder that came from the Crows. And that got me to thinking, what is the lowest common denominator in this lack of positional development? And 1 name springs too mind. Scott Camporeale!

In his tenure at the club (2010-2019) he was in charge of the midfield essentially the entire time (even Godden said in an interview that last year Campo still ran all the stoppages). And in that time we have never developed any player above whipping boy status. With this in mind, perhaps Rory's shortcomings as a player might be largely compounded by a coach with a track record of not being able to develop or exploit a consistent outside threat. I mean, even when we were good, we were slingshotting from our defense coached by Podsiadly, not from our midfield.

Fingers crossed Nicks and Godden can reverse this. Because this team and this fanbase is absolutely screaming for one!

Brodie Smith? AA in 2014.

Seed has had patches where you could consider him elite but it's always been derailed by injury and it takes him a bit to get back to his best.
There was a patch of about 7-8 games 2 years ago where he was averaging over 700m gained on a wing and commentators were throwing AA around when talking about his output. Then injury struck. He is a weapon when he is up and going.

I loved Seed, especially his first 8 games on 2018. But in 2019 his consistency and injury problems have really held him back. For what its worth I still think he could take the next step if in the right setup!

Still an outside midfield position.

The last Adelaide AA wingman I can think of is Anderson, in the early 1990s. However, he was developed by Essendon and only returned to Adelaide in the twilight of his career. Even our premiership wingmen weren't anything to write home about - Vardy was the best of them and he was nowhere near AA standard (Koster, Connell & Thiessen were the others).

Any way you care to look at it, our shortage of AA wingmen goes back a long way prior to Campo's influence.
