Essendon's first discussions with Carlton over a possible trade for outgoing defender Adam Saad involved an ambitious bid for one of a trio of untouchable Blues stars.
The opening gambit with the Blues centred on one of Charlie Curnow, Harry McKay or Sam Walsh as a provocative first suggestion of a suitable trade for their out-of-contract defender.
The Bombers' next demand was similarly bold, asking for Carlton’s first pick and Tom De Koning.

All suggestions were given short shrift by Carlton list bosses, who believe their existing first-round draft pick – presently eight – on its own is slightly too much for the talented defender.

Sources indicate that Carlton have explored options with Geelong about splitting their first-round pick – Carlton trading their early first-round pick to Geelong for two of the three later first-round picks the Cats have in this year’s draft courtesy of the future picks they received for losing Tim Kelly.

The Blues also have open to them the option of trying to push Saad through the pre-season draft if a trade cannot be achieved with Essendon.

The Blues did that last year when they could not agree a trade with Gold Coasts for the out-of-contract Jack Martin. The difference then was Carlton’s pick was much earlier in the pre-season draft than it is this year so there was less risk that another club would take him before them.
This year Saad would have to get through to pick eight in that draft and bypass Essendon at pick six. The Bombers would undoubtedly threaten to redraft him.
Any club taking a player in the national or pre-season drafts has to accept any contract terms a player could nominate as his requirement if drafted.

Saad has been offered a $3 million contract with Carlton over five years. Those terms would be very significant for a club to commit to for a player who did not wish to play for the club.

The challenge of securing a trade is going to be made more difficult by the fact the Bombers will be juggling other trade issues.

The Bombers will be fielding approaches from Port Adelaide and the Crows over Orazio Fantasia after the forward, who remains contracted at Essendon for next year, repeated his wish of last off-season to be traded back to South Australia.
The Bombers are also working through how to deal with restricted free agent Joe Daniher and his request to move to Brisbane.
If the Bombers deem the free-agency compensation pick they would receive for Daniher - expected to be a first-round pick depending on the contract terms the Lions offer - is insufficient and they match the Lions' contract terms, then Brisbane would be forced into trading for the player.

And after potentially losing players the Bombers will be searching and negotiating for replacement players to come into the club.

Maybe think abit more.... and then maybe ask what he was doing. He rejected an off of 850 for 3 years plus triggers for a 4th.... that's pretty damn good for a 28 fwd whose body wasn't up to it last year and there maybe doubts if he will live up to his precious heights at all.... north think the 3.4m is best spent elsewhere that's what they are thinking

I don’t think it is. That is the narrative we are building for ourselves to justify the illogical position we are in. Every player would have some back and forth on $. I am sure it could have been resolved.

North have decided they don’t want Brown because of the way he plays.

The Pies have been contacted about North Melbourne’s Ben Brown but have privately said they are not interested.

They wouldn't have the money, and as I pointed out yesterday, I reckon Melbourne's interest will centre around them moving on T. McDonald.

It'll be one of Dees, Saints or the Bombers now.

Pretty scathing.

"It was pretty disgusting"
"Running around like cowboys"
"Understand there are things they are working through. "
"Jade will get some sort of payout."

Pickering is always going to back his client.

Perhaps Jade was just a very overrated assistant coach and admin stuffed up badly by appointing him?

Thank goodness. I still can’t deal with seeing Levi Greenwood in a Collingwood jumper let alone Ben Brown! #keepben

Of course

Imagine if Pickering had've come out and been lukewarm on radio about his client getting sacked from North. All of a sudden Jade is looking for new representation. Pickering is not an unintelligent bloke and knows which way the wind is blowing - of course he's going to get on the front foot and tell you his bloke is hard done by and disgusted and all this

OK. I'm gathering it was Pickering talking about it.
Yes.

He also spoke about Jed. Pushed on whether Jed had any concerns with the current issues at the club, Pickers responded saying that the players had a meeting recently and Jed didnt mention any concerns, just wanting a decent contract.

Pickering: Jed Anderson is out of contract and we're just trying to negotiate our way through a contract with North at the moment, that's taking a bit of time.

****ing Pickering.

He would smell blood in the water. The fact we have to pay the minimum cap etc.

I'm sure he's probably shooting for overs.

I can see this dragging right out.

Yeah but super interesting to go down like the way he did and clip north when the club and him both share respective clients. I mean calling them cowboys and talking about his own personal emotions towards it, again, when they both share clients. Super unprofessional. The club should ask for a please explain, even if they may have a bit to explain themselves...

It just might be that. But it would have to be difficult for a bloke with ethics (Brown) to consider that option. I don't get it if he is really considering to go there.
Why would you tell Brown if you were doing that?

Blame Rama all you want, but if we wanted Ben we would have got the deal done.

We don’t want him in our team. It is not about his contract.
Welcome back Zebs

Obviously things changed over time.

Very nice contract offered to Brown, Brown rejected - shit hit the fan on the season, covid19 pressures, injury to BBB and the original offer was no longer available. BBB had his chance and blew it - I suspect there may be more at play here but to me that's it in a nutshell.

I love BBB but will back the club on this.
