I really hope the incumbent St Kilda admin can initiate a virtuous circle of competence and effectiveness before the key players inevitably get poached by richer clubs.

I know we won't be able to keep Gubby and Lethlean forever, probably not even Gags and Finnis will stick around til they retire but it would hurt like hell to go back to chancers like Pelchen, Trout, Nettlefold and Butterss again.

It's really a dream that we're so well run ATM. From the social warrior Finnis who is responsible for laundering our image so effectively that Donald Trump is considering hiring him to campaign for a Sainthood and turning nightmares like Seaford into RSEA Park, to Lethlean, the Keyser Soze of the AFL who can carry out detailed long term plans so immaculately that Hollywood want to make a series of films about his life in the style of Clooney's Ocean's Eleven, to the player whisperer Gubby who's next trick will surely be to make a sewerage treatment plant in Dingley appear to be Anfield, to the list manager/banker/hostage negotiator Gallagher who is banned from every casino in Europe and plays Supercoach exclusively with players whose first names start with J - and has won every year since 2003. The way these guys operate around each other, it almost makes up for the mismanagement our club has historically had to endure for the preceding century. Almost.

There's about 14-15 clubs who are scheming on ways to headhunt our dream team. Let's hope that we can keep them here until we've got a dynasty of success behind us and another generation of star wheelers and dealers.

Amen.

I don't understand why we would entertain this… we give up two decent AFL standard players and overpay Crouch by about 200K per year so that Adelaide get the pick they're after?

How about get ****ed.

If the crows weren't a complete basket case and had finished mid table, no one would blink at band 2 compo… but because they're a complete train wreck they want us to come to the table… for a free agent.

I hope we make it clear that either we take him as a free agent and they can get whatever band is appropriate or they can match it and keep him.

If the name is Treloar then the concern is some of these trades are not really looking after the future. That would be one that would be really divisive here. At least Crouch (shouldn’t) hurt our draft pick position.

Exactly. We wouldnt get anything out of this.

Roberton hasn't played a game in ages, if another club is interested surely we just say "yep, he's yours".
Webster seems to be out of favour, I'm guessing he's just not rated as highly as Long, Paton, Coffield and Clark. Fair enough too, if we can get a packet of twisties I say we take them.
Lonie I would rather keep, if he's got to go I hope we get something for him because he's been pretty decent the last 2 years.
Dunstan is just down the pecking order now with new mids coming in an injury interrupted year.

Coupla 3rd and 4th rounders in there, can't see us getting much else.
3rd and 4th round picks will be in demand due to the number and quality of the NGA kids this year.

With a bucket of junk picks we'll be able to secure perhaps 2x 2nd rounders, plus we'll have 2 rookie selections.
If we end up keeping our 1st then so much the better, but building equity in next year's draft aught be the priority IMHO.

Two players not best 22 on decent coin. Makes sense to punt them.

Id hope we negotiate a better pick that a real late one. Considering that by paying Crouch extra we bump their pick up by 18 spots or so?

And both are still decent players, if we didn’t bump up the offer then they’d be getting pick 14 or keeping Crouch. So I hope it’s a decent pick otherwise what’s the point

Hard to fathom the bombers have paid 550 per season over 5 years for Jye. Word is the money for Dunkley is even higher.
Imagine being the likes of Ridley and McGrath, who have just re-signed and watching these new blokes get absolute bulk cash, particularly an 11 game player from gws.

Dunkley on decent coin is fine. He’s a proven premiership player. Bringing in an 11 gamer on huge coin has to rock the boat doesn’t it?

mid we paid him around the same, he’d be on $100k less than we just signed Steele up for... and he was AA, third in the Brownlow and won the B&F.

Anyone that is coming out of contract at the Dons would be demanding the same money. Feel like it only ends poorly tbh.

There's no way North or Essendon would have done us a solid on Dal Santo & Goddard to help us ramp up the compo.

Not sure why we should be expected to do otherwise.

This exactly! I am all for trying to get "Win win" outcomes, would much rather have a good trading relationship with as many clubs as possible, it's in our own best interests, but I don't recall seeing any other clubs lining up to do us a solid and improve our compo when we were having to strip mine our own list to try and rebuild post Lyon era!!

Not only that, no-one actually knows yet what the compo will be!! Basing it on previous years is fraught with peril because the salary cap is going to be reduced. The AFL has a grand history of manipulation to suit it's own agenda, and a strong Adelaide is part of its agenda. I could very easily see the AFL grading it a band 1 compo and using reduced salary caps as its justification!

I honestly don't see why we would pay overs to assist the crows with compensation. $200K out of cap for a few years makes little sense, especially when we will need to start paying our younger emerging players more as they mature.

The club still needs to operate beyond 2021, we need to continue to develop our list as we play finals. otherwise we risk another decade down the bottom, and I don't really want to live through that again.

I don’t buy it. Would cause too many internal issues with other players.
I thought it was a football club not a social club, lets never trade or delist anyone because it may upset someone , neither of them will get a game for us year baring injuries , i think the club is actually dong them a favour

You save salary off the spuds that can't make your team. You will actually have more cap space if Web and Dunstan go. and it saves you wasting a first rd pick. It's a no brainer.

Wow.

I meant because it would set expectations from others on our list of increased payments of Crouch got $700k a season. Why would we do that for the single sake of Adelaide? Doesn’t make sense to me - I don’t buy it.

I agree, trades should seldom consider the feels of who may or may not be friends. I doubt that is a real issue for most players.
