My read of Gags's interview is this:

1. We want to fill 2 spots in our best 22. That means Crouch and one more.

2. We want back up depth from King/Membrey. That will be McKernan or someone of that ilk, and not someone like Ben Brown.

3. We wouldn't mind some KPD depth, but it's not a huge priority (provided we re-sign Carlisle).

This tells me that the second best 22 player we want to bring in is a midfielder or mid/fwd. This also fits with (a) we missed out on Caldwell who fits this bill, so we had already identified a need there, and now we have earmarked $ to spend; (b) Ratten's comments about wanting a midfielder who can hit the scoreboard.

Anyone's guess who that player might be, but you'd think they are pretty highly rated given what it will take to get a spot in our starting midfield at the moment, and the dollars we can reasonably spend on getting him.
The mid/fwd we are targeting could just be a mid while turning Steele into a mid/fed type

The thing is only one team has matched an offer for a restricted free agent. And that was back when you guys lost Danger. But that was a different situation as obviously Danger was a lot better and more durable and a year younger than crouch when he left, so he was worth more than what you guys wouldve got in compensation. So, I don't think your club will risk matching the offer to keep him when you're looking to refresh your list and midfield. Especially when end of 1st round compensation is absolutely what he's worth. He's not worth pick 2. I'd even say Jack Steele would be lucky to get pick 2 for us. Not that i'd ever want to lose Jack

He's not worth pick 2 but he's worth more than pick 20 so tell me why they don't match and force a trade? No way the saints don't trade for him. You don't commit to a player and then let him down. No one would ever want to go to the saints after that. The saints would have known the whole way that if we don't offer enough money, there is a chance the crows will match so I'm sure they are talking through their options.

BECAUSE NO CLUB HAS EVER MATCHED AN RFA OFFER... NO NOT EVEN FOR DANGER!

Worry about your own club's ability to get deals done knackers.

Is he worth a 5 or 6 pick upgrade? That’s the point of the argument.

in the end you take the pick and commit to a rebuild. 5/6 picks in a draft that’s as compromised as this one based on Covid and the amount of top end picks that will already be committed to going to a home pre draft means there is minimal to none level of improvement for Adelaide.

So because no club has done it before it can't be done...? The Danger deal was a match without officially matching. Geelong knew the compo wouldn't satisfy the Crows and the Crows would have matched so cut out the middle man and got the trade done. Will probably be the same for Cameron and Crouch this year.

They won't get Band 1 no matter what , and if its Band 2 or Band 3 makes no difference.
They won't match.
I can understand its nice for Adelaide supporters going to bed at night dreaming about pick 2, but its really no different to me going to bed at night dreaming about Jessica Alba.

I would suggest they are vastly different dreams!! Either that or you dream about Jessica Alba in a wildly different way than I do! o_O

Why are we letting him down if we don’t trade for himFWIW I think the club gave different opinions about this to the supporters here who seem to be almost unanimous in saying they do not want to trade for him if Adelaide does match.

but he elected to go to us as a FA. If Adelaide say “no that compensation isn’t enough” and we say “ok sorry we can’t trade for him. We don’t have picks to play with so we only wanted to do this under FA” then that’s not our fault.

don’t think you can say nobody would ever want to go to st kilda. It’s not like we’re saying we don’t want him.

Yeah I see your point and from an outsider I would say yeah just take it. But if it were Carlton I would want them to fight for any little pick upgrade we can get. Especially given how bad we have been, every little bit helps.

Haha not want to come to stkilda.

just refresh his memory about the trade targets we landed last year and how they failed in landing Papley. Then screwed up with Butler.

clearly we get things done.

Of course there's a chance they match the offer. But the club don't want him there as much as Ricciuto is leading on. Brad was on record multiple times over the last 2 years saying his preference was to stay at Adelaide. Crows weren't willing to offer him a good enough contract tho and essentially told him to look elsewhere. Now they're going to backflip over a couple of spots in compensation?

There's no guarantee he nets them pick 2 even if we up our offer. So what are saints left with? an inflated crouch contract that we weren't originally going to pay him anyway, and Adelaide getting pick 20 anyway and then decide, oh well we didnt get the compo we expected so were not gonna go through with taking Webster/Roberton/Dunstan etc.

Also look at all the previous free agents and what they netted their club and tell me what Brad is worth in comparison to all of those.

Surely you see this?

You want to argue a pick upgrade in a draft where realistically anyone from like pick 5-30 could be a lucky dip?

there is no exposed form. So how do you argue the strength of a 5/6 pick upgrade when you don’t need the points either?? It’s stupid and a stupid point your making.

effectively you want them to challenge us to a deal to save face for supporters who knew months ago he was gone when they didn’t re-sign him.

Brad Crouch surely has to buy Adelaide and their supporters bags the way they’re trying to get him a pay raise at his new employer.

There is a main board to discuss trades with opposition supporters. You are not even a Crows supporter FFS. Why are you here?!

What everyone is conveniently forgetting is that we MUST use a first round pick this year. Otherwise we can’t trade our first rounder next year which we have big plans for.

Might be a jack martin moment in all this Adelaide madness. Plenty of upside here if Adelaide shit the bed

So.. Adelaide say to St Kilda - we will match the offer. Saints say to them, sorry we only wanted to pick up Brad if we didnt have to give up any picks and will be keeping pick 15.
Adelaide end up giving Brad a 5 year deal on heaps of coin, when they refused to offer him a deal in the first place. They then have a player signed for that period of time who openly doesnt want to be at the club, whilst embarking on a rebuild. All for the sake of 5 picks.
Whilst I'm not on the inner sanctum of a football club, I can't think of too many organisations in the world (sporting or non sporting) that would think that is a good idea.

Or even funnier. They match stating they want a trade.

St kilda say 15 is off the table.

Goes backwards and forward until trade period ends.

Crouch goes into the PSD. Given clubs were cooler on crouch than expected and he wants to return to Victoria. We get him for nothing but the original offer.

Adelaide get nothing.

Far as I see it the price on crouch diminishes the longer this goes on. Pick wise.

yep, and that's what all the nuffies on here (and Dodoro) fail to comprehend.

Lol… at cartlon fans coming in with the trade and moral advice.

Pay this bloke millions but aren't prepared to offer up a pick. :drunk:

That wouldn't happen as Crouch would have a deal from adelaide

I think this is the trade period where gags needs to show a bit of a sharp edge.

To date hes been all about getting the deal done and being fair. Clubs have got away with a bit like the stuv, bruce and acres. Its major but they got a bit. Now of course those trades never eventuated to the levels those clubs would have liked.

Walking crouch to the PSD would be the type of ballsy move that would make clubs respect our openess to being fair at the trade table but not exploited.

This might be the time to show them we are not a walk over.

Crouch does not have to accept the Adelaide deal. The moment Adelaide match it goes into a normal trade scenario. If a trade is not done he goes into the draft.

Adelaide have no intention of keeping him. Theres no way they select him in the PSD.

If that worked it wouldn't be free agency.
They have two choices.
They let him accept his free agency offer , or they give him an equivalent contract.
They can't force him to move if they give him a contract.

Once the FA offer is made there is no going backward and forward.
