I was probably a little too absolute in my last comment - in Australia it is a bit different given the complete lack of personality of our pollies leading to populist policies. In the USA, I reckon its around the populist candidate with soundbytes that gets it. Career politician would have no chance against an Oprah Winfrey candidate or Trump as a candidate.

You're still discounting the extent to which Trump ran on policy.

I can think of a few ... lock her up, build the wall, drain the swamp ... he's done well with those so far.
My favourite is the repeal and replace Obamacare. Had something ready to go which was bigger and better. The Best!

Had the majority in both houses too.

It is populist but people want populist policy not just popular candidates.

Unlimited immigration and free health care for illegals will go down like a lead baloon outside the Dem bubble. Biden is the only sane Dem candidate with a chance of appealing to those who arent a six pack short of a slab.

I may have missed it but has any primary candidate suggested unlimited immigration?

Have you heard Biden speak lately? Maybe if he doesn’t talk until mid 2020 he might be in with a shot.

Most want to stop illegal immigration being a criminal offence, want to end deportations and offer free health care.

It doesnt take a rocket scientist to work out what would happen if those policies were put in place.

Thats a major depature of the policies in place when Obama was president.

He seems rather gaffe prone from what i have read, then again Trump says some rather out there things so Im not sure thats a death blow to his campaign.

I have been going through a number of boxes that I brought back to Australia two years ago and found a few interesting political things in one.

1. A bumper sticker and two pamphlets from the 1968 campaign of Eugene McCarthy for President.
2. A incomplete scrapbook with newspaper clippings beginning Jan 3, 1969 on Senator Edward Kennedy for President 1972. The last entry is from Jan 23, 1969. I guess I kind of gave up.
3. Two bumper stickers from the 1972 Democratic Gubernatorial Primary in Texas for Frances "Sissy" Farenthold. She lost. She came in second to Tom Eagleton, the eventual Vice Presidential candidate, at the !972 Democratic Convention. I mentioned this in an earlier post.

I also have other election material I have yet to find. When I do so, I'll let you know in case you'd be interested. Most of the stuff is from the 60s, and 70s.

There'd probably be an archive somewhere interested in this stuff too - some of that may be rare material

I do have an embossed "Thank You" card from Ted Kennedy after the Chappaquiddick incident. I sent him a letter of support after it. I think my collection of campaign buttons might be worth a bit. The first one I personally obtained was a small Goldwater/Miller button from the 1964 campaign when I was 12. I also have a small lapel donkey that was given to me from the woman who was my student teacher supervisor. It was her father's from the 1944 Democratic National Convention when he was a delagate. I'm yet to find the 1984 Reagan poster which was autographed by Nancy Reagan. My brother got it for me when Mrs Reagan was at the 1984 Illinois State Fair. Also looking for the personally written letter from Senator Barry Goldwater's widow after his death. I wrote to her about my admiration for him back when I was 12.

Gee you really have been an active voter. Well done to you.

Thanks. I liked politics from an early age, mainly elections. My first real involvement in a campaign was distributing pamphlets for a Democratic candidate who was running for the Illinois state house in the Democratic primary in March 1970. My American History teacher, a nun, who was a member of the non-partisan League of Women Voters asked me after a class if I could help a campaign. The precinct I lived in was solidly Republican and the local Dem candidate needed help. I had doors slammed in my face by some of my neighbours! I was an 18 year old who couldn't even vote at the time. I also worked in the 1972 Democratic campaign in Texas for Frances Farenthold for Governor who I mentioned in another post. It wasn't until 2008 that I worked on another campaign after living here for 25 years.

If Warren's support was to collapse sometime before Christmas due to a scandal or a bad debate performance, expect Hillary Clinton to run again. Betting Odds of her winning the nomination have been steadily going up over the past fortnight and she is now third favourite for the nomination according to the average betting odds despite not running.

Clinton cannot and will not run again

Like coaching gigs, if you get passed over enough your cards are marked regardless of your suitability as a candidate

Then there is the issue of organisation, she doesn't have one any more, and the general is less than 13 months away

More importantly her time has past, and she knows this

The only reason she is attracting punters is name recognition, and the fact no single candidate has YET to excite the base. This will change once the primaries commence

If she were to run again with and Impeachment inquiry still hanging over Trumps head, expect a third party run from a anti establishment type, e.g. Tulsi Gabbard.

If Hillary does run, I can recycle my old Hillary 2016 campaign buttons. Oh yeah, I don't have any, just a small lapel pin. You know, the old H-> one.

Hillary won't be running. There is not enough enthusiasm for her. Most of us wish we would have had another candidate to choose from in 2016 besides Hillary or Bernie and what did we get? Old what's-his-name O'Malley. Warren has the momentum at the moment, but as we've already seen this season, that can change rather quickly. Have a look at the Democratic polls around this time back in 2007. Hillary was the odds on favourite to win the nomination according to the polls and odds makers. It was Clinton 47% Obama 21% on Oct 15, 2007 and we all know how that story ended up after people started to actually cast votes.

As I've said previously, it's far too early to make any accurate predictions at this stage. There is no real precedent for what's happening.

What I think Hillary can do is point to where moderates will go once Biden inevitably implodes. The plan b for moderates is all over the shop, and her backing one will be a boost for that part of the party

And to the others (not chi town), Obama will not endorse anyone until the primary is decided. The most senior party elder in the USA tends to wait till then (although quite a few have engaged in dirty pool under the table to ensure their man gets up)

A Hillary endorsement would help a centrist candidate, but I'm not too sure that Biden is going to implode. So far his popularity has continued in most polls, though he has slipped a bit, but that's to be expected based upon the impeachment inquiry stuff. He's even 16 points ahead in one poll and the latest Iowa poll has him tied with Warren and Sanders. Anything can happen. Bernie's heart attack doesn't seem to have hurt him too much. Things are still too fluid.

And you are correct about Obama. How can anyone with any kind of knowledge about American politics think he'd endorse any candidate at this stage. He'll remain silent until the successful candidate has it wrapped up. It doesn't matter that Biden was his VP. Of course if(when?) Michelle would decide to run... :p

Warren really fits into the Overton window that was shifted by Sanders in 2016. She’s a less objectionable version of Clinton who has adopted some of Sanders’s policies (and seems to genuinely intend to deliver them).

Biden is a multi campaign loser who is only in the running because of Obama nostalgia.

Just watched a segment on SBS's PBS News Hour showing a town hall meeting with a purple district Dem representative who won last year trying to find the balance in the impeachment debate. Poor guy. He got it from both sides. That's something that OAC and someone like Kevin McCarthy will never have to face. Too bad.

Just a reminder that the next Democratic debate featuring the next President of the Unites States is on Wed morning at 11am Melbourne time. It can be seen on YouTube through CNN and probably other sources. I don't know if we are able to watch it directly on CNN online or if it's on Foxtel. Hopefully this will be the last time we'll be seeing some of the list cloggers. I shall especially be watching the moderates who could be the standard bearer if Biden's support collapses. Oh yeah... and Bernie to see if he tones down the anger so as not to have another heart attack, this one on stage.

The debate is being held in Ohio. Have you ever been to Ohio? The only good thing about the state is Cedar Point, especially Millennium Force. I've been on it at least 60 or 70 times.

*sigh* To be young(ish) again. :(

Whoa! 60 or 70 times! You are braver than I am! (That would be 59 or 69 times more than I've ever gone on a ride like that.)

If I remember correctly, the debate was shown on Foxtel last time. I know I watched it, but not sure if it was on line on my iPad, or on the TV via Foxtel. It went on for hours.
