Hey Souup could I ask for your opinion on Rhett Bazzo?

Was checking out his profile and he seems to have some goals to his name despite being labelled as a key defender? Would appreciate any insights you have of him as a prospect and fit for NMFC, as he seems a good size

As was mentioned by GR, he's been playing as a forward this year so that 's my recent perspective of him as a player. These are some notes I've written on him throughout the course of this year, and I've also typed out what I remember of him as a defender.

Strengths:
- Can beat you in a variety of ways. Very good contested mark, protects the drop zone really well in 1 on 1 contested situations, gets good separation on the lead, beating opponent over the back towards goal etc.
- Reads the flight of the ball exceptionally well
- Tackles with real aggression and intent. Think Dixon
- Very good foot skills
- Athletically excellent for his height in all the ways that stand out to the naked eye (agility, leap, quickness)
- When he plays defense he can do it all. He can play loose man really well due to his ability to read the flight and his defensive positioning as a loose is elite. He can play a lockdown role as athletically he's excellent and sticks close to opponents. Will need to put on some weight if he's going to play lock-down on some of the gorilla types you see at AFL level like Hawkins, Dixon, Darling etc.

Weaknesses:
- Undisciplined. Will let his emotions get the better of him and do something stupid to give away a free kick or 50m or just seemingly not put in the required effort in a contest. Think Matthew Richardson/Charlie Dixon/Barry Hall when they crack it
- I've seen him make some really puzzling decisions that make you think 'why would you do that?'
- Can be a bit fumbly below the knees
- I've never watched him dominate a game as a defender or forward
- Hasn't played any senior footy

Forward playstyle comparison: Eric Hipwood athletically with Dixon's temperament and aggression.
Defense playstyle comparison: Jake Lever

It's early in the season but I think he's a genuine chance of being there at our 2nd rounder. The real quality of this draft is around 30 picks deep in my view before it really starts to drop off and Bazzo's well within that range.

Would be in the "it's a lock" camp if Hawks sitting on 12, North 0.

8 v 4 is dicey AF knowing our history of "building a winning culture" late season dead rubber wins.

I know its shit, but damned if we get Clarko'd on this.

2022, with a fitter list, I think 7-10 wins is fair game. Im willing to take the pain for half a season more.

Waiting for end of season?

Would be rough to have the vid with the most 'likes' in your catalogue staring a Hawthorn player... 😪
Would have to pass Elijahs 20k and Jamarra's 17k views.

Anyway, still have half the SANFL season and the championships to come (if Covid doesn't destroy the season again).

The hawks would have to lose 16 in a row. Has that ever happened under Clarko?

We’ve won 1 game in 19 games. Winning 2 in 11 would be a definite improvement.

I’d by lying if it wasn’t concerning, but when you think about it logically, it would require both: Hawthorns worst ever losing streak under Clarko, & North to double their wins over the last 19, in 8 less games. It’s very unlikely.

Our only winnable game IMO is Gold Coast in Hobart, but we will only have Tarrant & Stephenson back.

AFL draft 2021: Rhett Bazzo proud to follow in late father Steve’s footsteps at Swan Districts

Rhett Bazzo and his late father Steve.

Rhett Bazzo and his late father Steve.

Rhett Bazzo is proud to wear the No.1 guernsey at Swan Districts and would be “pretty happy” to become half the player his late father Steve was.
One of WA’s top draft prospects, the 17-year-old always wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps and don the black-and-white stripes, and inheriting the same number has made it even more special.
Bazzo was just 11 years old when his dad, a WAFL champion who played 158 of his 230 senior games with the Swans and seven seasons with the number one on his back, lost his battle with cancer.

A few years down the track and multi-talented youngster was offered a sports scholarship at Guildford Grammar, representing the school in footy and cricket.
He has been a boarder at the school ever since and it was only fitting he joined Swan Districts through their futures program.

“My dad was a life member at Swans, he was at Peel as well but I got offered to come up to Swan Districts and head to Guildford which was a great opportunity and something I couldn’t turn down,” Bazzo said.
“I wanted to play for them from a young age and I always loved their logo and stuff like that so it’s pretty special to put the No.1 jumper on as well.”
Now in his final year at school, Bazzo will combine PSA footy commitments with WAFL colts duties at the Swans.
“I’m just trying to enjoy it as much as I can,” he said.
“I’ve got school footy with mates and Swan Districts with a lot of mates as well so it’s pretty comfortable there and I’m close with a lot of the boys.
“I’ll just slip and slide into any team whenever it’s needed so it will be good fun and hopefully I’ll be involved with the State side as well.”
A side-by-side Bazzo father-son comparison was done up on Swan Districts’ Facebook page last year of the pair flying of marks, and the resemblance is uncanny with the flowing locks and long limbs.
When asked if he thought he shared any football traits with his dad, Rhett replied “hopefully”.

“They do say that the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree so hopefully I can be half the player he was or even better, I’d be pretty happy with that,” he said.
The South Mandurah product has spent the majority of his time as an intercept-marking defender but was switched into attack this season under colts coach John Armstrong.
He’s averaging two goals, 5.5 marks and five scoring shots per game to show recruiters another side to his game.
“I’m pretty flexible, I don’t mind where I end up,” Bazzo said.
“I’d probably say I’m a bit more comfortable down back as I’ve been playing there a bit longer.

“Stiffy (Swan Districts talent manager Greg Harding) and Army (John Armstrong) came up to me during the pre-season and wanted to see how I’d go as a forward.
“So far it’s been pretty good. It’s a good challenge and good for my development.”
Bazzo will be one of five West Aussies lining up against Geelong’s VFL at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday as part of his AFL Academy commitments.
The 196cm swingman will join fellow AFL Academy member, Subiaco midfielder Matt Johnson, for a week of training at West Coast, likely during the next school holidays.
He was looking forward to learning of some of the best in the business down back.
“It will be good to train under Jeremy McGovern and some of their other talls like Oscar Allen, Jack Darling, Tom Barrass, it will be a really good experience,” he said.
