I might be reading too much into it, but both Hawthorn and Collingwood seem to have gone for players in the MSD who can make a contribution in the second half of the year - Hawthorn with Newcombe, who seems ready to go, and Jackson Callow, who's been playing against men in the SANFL; likewise Collingwood with a 23 year old in Ash Johnson.
Clarko and Buckley probably coaching for their careers.

Nothing’s guaranteed but he looks a few levels above the next best.

Let's put it this way, if he and Daicos contested the same ball, Daicos would be a skid mark left in Hornes wake. He'd literally get trampled.

Great observation and totally agree. I think Newcombe and Callow are both likely to make their way into Hawthorn's best 22 with Ash Johnson doing the same at Collingwood.

Ham might get a game for us but he's far less likely than the above 3 to have any meaningful immediate impact.

Probably a little unfair considering Callow is 19 and Newcombe is 20.

But both do seem more ready than others around the same age.

I think the point is that F/S bids can be matched in the 1st round but NGA can’t (1st 2 rounds after this year). Of course he’d still have to agree to be F/S nominated but if he’s a likely high pick you’d have to think he’d rather go to a nominated club than GC or whatever.

Thanks Rob,

You’ve answered my question perfectly.
So with keeping all that in mind , I’m pretty sure it slightly tilts the scales in our favour. All we hope now, is that Choppy juniors are guns !!

I see the kid Horne has been compared with Dangerfield, but I reckon once you factor the kicking, he's closer to a better marking version of D. Martin.

Even when you go back and look at Martin at 18, Horne appears to be another level ahead of him right now.

I saw Newcombe at Box Hill when they beat our 2s by a cricket score; adds a different dimension to their midfield - he's got some zip out of the contest, which with O'Meara and Worpel down a bit, and Mitchell the distributor, should help them a bit

The thing that was odd about that vid was how tall Dusty doesn't look.....he's now 187, but I haven't been able to find his draft height.

Dustin Martin (Bendigo Pioneers/Vic Country) - Draft Profile

Height: 186cm
Weight: 88kg
Preferred foot: Right/Dual Sided
Role: Midfield/Wing/HBF
Potential: 8-8.5/10

Horne looks as close to a sure thing as you can get.

The only redeeming feature of finishing stone motherless last would be selecting him in the draft.
He does doesn't he. Jy, LDU, Phillips, Powell, TT and Horne with Stevo and Scott on the wings and potentially more (such as Jed and Cunners plus draftees) rotating through generally has a really nice look to it in terms of balance and pure ability.

Wonder if we'll look at some pick swaps this year?..

NM: 2022 1st & 2021 pick 38 out to GWS.
GWS: 2021 pick 3 & 2021 pick 46 to NM.

Leaves us with: 1, 3, 20, 46, 71 (and potentially a priority pick too)
I suspect GWS will be moving players out and investing in juniors.
