Morris is saying the Saints might let Billings go if they can get first round compensation.

Offer both our first round picks imo. I think he would be a great get for us and would be just the kind of player we need. There is plenty of upside there I think.

Agreed. Really looks like someone who'd perform at a much higher level in the right team.

Billings would definitely give more than Prior or KColeman but not sure if he’s worth the salary cap space.

He’s a restricted free agent, so teams don’t have to trade for him, but rather offer a large enough contract so that St Kilda receive a first round compensation pick right after their own.

Couldn’t imagine any club offering enough for a first round Compo pick.

yep, Daniher's 3 year/800-900k is the minimum first round compo benchmark seen so far.
I'd prefer to pay that for Merrett instead of Billings.

This weeks Road to the Draft talks free agents and restricted free agents.

Billing’s is discussed at the 6 minute mark.
Another player they brought up being out of contract is Jordan Dawson, not sure if it's realistic but I think he'd be a great fit across half back. Found it interesting they mentioned Sydney have quite a tight salary cap as well.

Buddy's big payouts may be kicking in.

I have high hopes for Answerth. We know he can do a job defensively, he's tough and quick and tenacious. He's proved he can do a job on opposition small forwards. Also, I think he's about our only defender to have shown he has a natural instinct to run with the ball. It just hasn't happened since he's been out of the team. Sure, sometimes he will blast away it and kick it to an opposition defender down the line, but I always liked his dare and thought his composure and decision making will improve with more experience. I don't believe there is anything wrong with his kicking. Like Zac Bailey, when his career was in its infancy and he would get caught holding the ball alot when trying to take off from a pack, now he has a bit more awareness and knows when it's more likely to work. I'd love to have a fit Answerth available for team selection right now and think when he's fit he's the logical replacement for Birchall, albeit they are different types of players.

Answerth reminds me a bit of a young Elliot Yeo. Still a long way to go in his development, hope he can get his groin issues sorted & be back in 2022.

I can see why St Kilda would be keen to get a first round draft pick for Billings.

Right now they have a relatively old list, are rarely competitive, and have only pick 6 in this years draft (in terms of useful picks).

That's it.

Hopefully for their sake's, this year is just an anomaly (compared to a one off good year last year lol).

They are paying for trading away their draft picks now, as they have very few quality kids or players coming through.

I’d be pretty confident of getting two kids of a similar quality to Starcevich or Robertson with two late first round picks.

Or Bailey & J Berry - all taken around that mark.

People tend to underestimate the value of late 1st round & early 2nd round picks. Personally hope we keep our 1st rounders & even push up with one with regards to Will Ashcroft & our 2022 1st rounder.

Add two players of the quality of those mentioned with Will Ashcroft to add another quality mid in 2022 sounds like a plan to me.

Hope we arm our recruiters with picks to get it done in this years draft.

That's Starc IMO.

Yes, I said Starc to annoy chopperduck ;)

Really depends on what the draft depth is like.

2018 and 2020 had relatively shallow depth, to about the pick 15 to 17 range.

Where as 2017 and 2019 while lacking in much genuine top end talent, had good kids available out to around pick 30 odd.

This years draft crop was considered deep after the 2019 U16 Championships, and even with covid impacting on the Vic kids development, it’s still looking deep with a lot of quality WA kids, and some top end SA kids.

Vic metro dominated that championships, so hoping they really come through as well this year.

Every time I see this table I shudder at the deep strife Collingwood are in...

A total fire sale last year and nothing to show for it.

Some seriously average years ahead.

I had a bit of a giggle when one of the post round reports was shining of the potential talent of the list off the the back of the win against Melbourne.

Lol, give me a spell. Collingwoold will be shitsville for the next three years.

Each year there is good players that come out late in the 1st. The make up of the draft is almost irrelevant & in fact become throw away lines. It solely rests with recruiters ability to select well (some luck also helps).

I won’t use 2020 it’s too early but the example of 2018 is a good case in point.

Shallow depth to 15 & 17 range? Well I hope like hell we can pick up a replica of the player taken at 18 in the 2018 draft. Would suit needs perfectly 😜 in fact give us 2 of him please.

At worst 2 shots at the top 18 shouldn’t be sneezed at. No matter what the BF ‘experts’, let alone recruiters want to say about a draft in the lead up.
