For the draft watchers, how does Matt Roberts compare to Tom Powell? At a guess I'd say the similarities are that they weren't / aren't particularly athletic but very competent skill and footy iq wise. Main difference Roberts a bit taller but less solid and not quite as good at racking up disposals as Powell?
Tom Powell has/had a heap of development to come both body wise and game craft given he'd played so little footy the 2 years previous, Matty Roberts not so much.
On the score of athleticism Powell is also quicker and more agile which seems to be an AFL trend when drafting for the midfield.

Agree , surely they would have realised there was a real risk of losing him , not making room for a big mid ?
who do you reckon they pick ?
It'll depend on GWS ....I think GC will take whoever GWS don't take between Callaghan and Gibcus .....both need a tall DEF

GWS Haynes is the wrong side of 30 ....so Gibcus makes sense & they need Callaghan the least ....that said over supply hasn't stopped GWS B4 ...they have tended to overstock commodities, then sell players off

GC need Callaghan more

LUKE NANKERVIS

Anyone know much about this young fella? Ive got very good word that hes been interviewed multiple times by Adelaide, and has just had a sit down interview with them.

Smells like a Hamish special, maybe he will be our pick 75.

#14 Luke Nankervis (Sandringham Dragons)
189cm/76kg | 25/05/2003 | Wing/Forward

Splitting his game time between the wing and the half-forward role as he does in the NAB League, Nankervis had some nice moments throughout the game, bringing his usual strengths with his leap, speed and marking particularly impressive. It’s been noted before that his ability to keep his hands free in tackles and contests is outstanding. It led to him getting some free kicks as the game went on, as opponents tried to get the ball out of his hands, pushing him in the back or getting him high in the process. He was the first link in a fourth quarter chain of play that led to a Metro goal, taking a high-leaping contested mark and then kicking it in front of a teammate to run onto. He showed defensive accountability as well throughout the game, running hard for tackles and spoils even when it wasn’t in his area.

Roberts goes to ground too much for my liking , Powell is ahead on talent for mine with his stoppage craft and movement through a stoppage and clean hands

Looks like you might be in luck

Completely different players ....Powell is a high stats accumulator, who knows where to position himself on a footy field ....Roberts is more an impact player

Roberts will benefit from AFL training and better fitness ....he was much sharper at the start of the season than the end, after his injury .....looked like he added some weight in the layoff ....better than he's looked of late

I’m all for drafting Rachele, just not at 6. I’m hoping for a split of picks with Richmond and take him at 8

Sent from my iPhone using BigFooty.com
Rachele at #6 would make the #33 choice interesting ......you couldn't see 2 x sub 180 cm players being chosen

Rachele isn't sub 180
I wonder what that "giant" Gary Ablett Jr played like at the same age, i don't recall him receiving All Australian honours playing for Vic Country as a 16 year old or M.V.P for the Carnival that year or being anything other than a reasonable prospect when it came to the draft in his draft year? I seem to recall he wasn't considered anywhere close to the top echelon of talent in his draft year? Admittedly the 2001 was some sort of draft that's for sure but I'm pretty sure the Cats wouldn't have taken him before Jimmy Bartel and I doubt even with the bidding rules today he'd have drawn a bid in the 1st round. My recollection is he played quite a bit up forward before he earned a spot in the Cats midfield?

Early life[edit]
Gary Ablett Jr. was born to Gary and Sue Ablett in the country town of Modewarre, outside the regional centre of Geelong, Victoria.[2] As the eldest boy among four siblings, Ablett's childhood coincided with the peak of his father's footballing career. Along with his brother Nathan, Ablett would regularly attend his father's training sessions and weekly games.[2] Geelong players regarded them as "barefooted pests in the rooms", and would often engage in kick-to-kick sessions with both of the boys.[2] He attended Christian College Geelong during his schooling years.

Ablett played junior football with the Modewarre Football Club until he was chosen to play for the Geelong Falcons in the under–18 TAC Cup competition for the 2001 season.[2] Ablett's selection was met with controversy, as some families of other prospective junior players felt Ablett was chosen on the basis of his famous family heritage rather than footballing merit.[2] However, the Falcons' football manager Mick Turner repeatedly dismissed speculation.[2] Nonetheless, as the son of a popular and famous football player from Geelong, Ablett attracted a large following even at junior level. Although he was still a bottom-aged player, Ablett received mid-year State honours for Victoria Country during the 2001 National Championships. After spending one year in the TAC Cup, Ablett entered his name into the 2001 AFL draft at the conclusion of the 2001 season.[2]
