That was really poor from our 'team'.
Some very selfish senior players out there.
I wonder how Draper is viewed internally?

Fans obviously gush over a new first rounder, coaches are excited about what they can bring.

Players...? Particularly those at the fringes of the 22 or who might be squeezed out of the middle maybe not quite so enamoured. Have put in years and years and now see someone jump ahead of them.

Is that partly why he was sub and occasionally training in the B team? Just clip his wings a fraction, keep him grounded. Make sure other players see that he is having to earn his stripes and do some time. Not just the Chosen One given instant A Grader status.

Surely not.

Rachele was taken at pick 6 - had his debut RD 1 and played the first 10 games. First Rounder Max was put into the side and has now played 46 of 47 games.

They weren't pushing anyone out because we sucked donkey's balls

Sure, Ben Davis was possibly miffed that Rachele went straight in but who cares or noticed

Now we legitimately have more than 22 players deserving of a first 22 spot and that will have to be managed by Mr Relationships.

Even though that's exactly how those now-senior players also started their careers, too - by pushing their way into the team ahead of whoever the senior players in those spots were back then.

Tex was a Swans supporter growing up, but you are right with Burgess and Murphy.
Nope

From memory although I cant find a source to confirm, he also had Collingwood initially approach him to contract him to the NSW Scholarship Program and took Collingwood's offer to the Crows to convince them to sign him up to it instead so he could play for the club he supported.

I reckon if they were annoyed, which i doubt, its toward the 3 senior players.

Effectively the club said "you guys aren't good enough, so we've gone and got these guys instead".

Don't think there would be too much in it though, if anything

It's a really odd take.

To think Mathew Nicks wants to clip Drapers wings and keep the scrubs happy so he selects him as sub. Meanwhile pick 8 Daniel Curtin is given a full game.

Yes and no.

I think most players have had to bide their time, fight their way in, wait for their turn.

Laird's midfield spot was hard-earned and a long time coming for instance.

He finally is there, finishes in the top handful of our B&F every year and is shunted for some young whipper-snapper. Why isn't he dishing out high fives?

Team first sounds great in theory.

By "given a full game" you mean:
Given no game
Not selected
Sent to full back in the SANFL
Given a debut before being subbed at half time
Dropped instantly
Begrudgingly recalled
Sat on the bench as sub for 119 minutes and 30 seconds
Rotated through a bunch of different roles

So the complete opposite of Golden Child instant A Grader status. Making him bide his time, earn his stripes.

3rd qtr SE pocket

To be more specific, it happens when there's around 2 minutes left on the clock.

To be fair, the footage doesn't actually show whether people go to Draper afterwards. The tackle is laid during play (the third of three defensive efforts in a row by Draper), the ball continues further down the ground and is seen out of bounds by Keane. The camera doesn't pan back to Draper. I think someone mentioned that Cumming went and congratulated Draper, but it was actually Michalanney that Cumming came up and high-tenned. By the time the camera zooms back out everyone is back in position for the ball-up, and the Saints then immediately win the clearance and snap a goal.

I was talking about Curtin getting a full game in Rd 1, 2025.

But its your imaginary made up scenario - so carry on.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Dowling or Taylor were thinking "well, shit" when Draper came in the door. But that's what elite sport is like. I'm sure Murphy saw the recruitment of ANB as a death knell on his career, too.

Sorry, talent wins out - unless the club has introduced diversity quotas?

I was there and not many did if any.
Most went to the goal kicker.
Same with JP’s goal, a few of the backmen stayed back without going to celebrate.

Most likely the ones directly affected:
Murphy for ANB
Taylor/Berry for Draper/Peatling
Dowling for Cumming (I’d put Nank here too but he should really be in the 22 anyway)

Huh? When brought I have brought up the 7 players being gifted games in round 1 (and many more after) Berry, Rowe, Rachele, Soligo, Max, McASey , Draper- none of them had to bide their time. But you said it was only because we were crap.

So now despite Nicks gifting games in his first 5 years as coach - he changes strategy and puts Draper as Sub in rd 1 in some weird way to put him in his place and make Rory laird happy?

I am sure that making Draper sub was done to appease Laird after he was shunted from the midfield.

Normally you're bang on (except for the Collingwood thing and team sport definitions) but I reckon this take is just slightly off.

Most of the lads get around each other in an AFL environment. Sit around the changerooms for hours just chewing the fat. Playing pranks, having a laugh. Geeing each other up. Lots of different personalities and backgrounds but ultimately they're just a bunch of lads wanting to have a kick. I reckon Sid comes in, this kid is a star, especially if he has a good attitude which is looks like he does, everyone is stoked for his debut. Even the Harrys and Berrys of the world that have been pushed aside. Most of them will either think "gee whiz what a talent. I'll have to push myself to get back into this team", or they will just cruise along and be out of the AFL system in a few years.

Harbouring animosity within an AFL club is pretty rare I reckon.

If you were talking about a team maybe like the 36ers? - absolutely. NBL has a lot of different salaries, roles, the import factor, and a far smaller team fishbowl than the AFL world.

In this case, it was the Saints who kicked the goal. Crows players weren't celebrating at all after that.

Whether there were some high-fives for Draper beforehand or not, I'm not sure - but there would have been only a few seconds to do it because the ball was getting thrown back in.

Yeah sorry my bad, it was their end. 👍
