To give all members a priority. There were only two windows, priority or general public. The club had to make a hard choice and decided to prioritise all members over a handful of high-paying members. There was always going to be backlash but I think it would've been stronger if the other approach had been taken.

edit: what Macca19 said.

Yep, acknowledged this in my response above.

Allowance for a Gen Public take up was never going to be required.

Could have split it BD/1870/Platinum and Gold/Silver?
Only two categories. BD/1870/Platinum and Gold/Silver/3-game/general public. So then you have Gold and Silver members competing with the general public.

Was including general public an AFL enforced requirement? If not, they shouldn't have been included at all. As others have said, there was never any chance that the ticket allocation wouldn't be more than exhausted by the members before we got to the general public.

Take out the general public, and the 3-game for that matter.

Yes, I didn't see it, sorry.

I wonder if the club could've organised tickets over the phone for BD and 1870 members or the AFL would've forbidden it. I understand there are only a few hundred BD and 1870 members, so the manual process would've been doable. Especially with ticket sales starting at 2pm.

With only 15,000 tickets available the general public shouldn’t even be in a priority group. We have over 60,000 members so it’s pretty obviously going to be a sellout twice possibly three times over as it is.

It should’ve been…
P1 - Platinum/BD/1870
P2 - Silver/Gold

La fin.

Yes, good point. The general public could have access on Thursday if any tickets were available by then.

I don't really mind how they did it, their hands are tied, but did there have to be a public window?

Could have done BD/1870/Plat and then Gold/Silver (may have not been any left though so I can see why they did them all together). Pretty clear it wasn't going to make it to general public, and it seems like there is a 3rd window in the event more tickets magically appear on Thursday, so maybe that could have been the public window in the case of some tickets materialising.

General Public should not get any priority to tickets.

If there are only 2 priority groups allowed, it should be
P1 - 1870, BD
P2 - platinum, gold, silver

Where would've you drawn the line? If the categories were any different than they were for this game, you would've ended up with some members bundled up with the general public. In that case, they would also feel that having a membership was worthless. And there are probably more 3-game, silver or gold members than Club1870 or platinum, so the club made the choice that was thought to be appropriate. It's another case of damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Yes, it sucks to pay for the top-level membership and miss out on finals tickets, but I assume you get other benefits of being a club1870 or platinum member.
I think this is the conundrum the club were in.

In the end they probably had to choose between pissing off their most loyal members who are likely going to stick fat no matter what and giving an opportunity to some of the newer members on the hope that a big final win might convert them into lifers.

Versus risking alienating all of the least sticky members to regard the faithful.

I dont like it and I would like it even less if I missed out but I can see the rationale.

Having Gold and silver members competing with the general public is a lot better than having BD/1870/Platinum members competing with Gold and silver
Depending on what memberships you have I suppose. I've been a member for almost 20 years and during that time I've had silver, gold, platinum and 1870 memberships. Now I have a gold membership because the seats work well for our group. Other members make a big financial effort just to be able to afford silver memberships. Is it fair for us to miss out to randos?

Would you have expected every membership category that didn't have grand final

I was about to post a similar view.

Outside the club buying the full allocation and then onselling the tickets on a case by case basis (which I doubt the club has the time and resources to get this done in such a small window) there was always going to be unhappy fans.

They could offer something back for those that missed. From memory the club was offering a credit to 2022 members if they missed the Carlton game. Potentially may need to look at ways of offering something back to those that missed this Friday night, scaled according to their membership.

E.g. GA members get upgraded seats or merch.
Black Diamond get game day experience etc.

However even that is hard to plan for when there's still a likelihood of covid restrictions into 2022.

Few other random thoughts we were 1 kick away from only having 1 final this year.

Members from Swans, Dee's, Dogs etc must be shaking their heads at us at least some of us get to go. Only Lions members are better placed.

When I signed up this year I told the lad we'd be lucky to get 8 games. We ended up only missing the Collingwood game.

I paid up for granny guarantee across all our memberships but really only saw that as a donation to the club. Still not convinced that we'll get that entitlement.
A BD/Club 1870 exclusive tent at Alberton the day after the GF win would probably do it

I think at the very least BD and 1870 members should’ve got first dibs. These people are contributing significantly more to the club than others and some are extending themselves to do it.

I don’t know the exact numbers but there definitely would’ve been tickets leftover for Platinum/Gold/Silver in Priority 2 had they done it this way.

I’m a Platinum member fwiw.

OK how about this. The current dollar value of your membership multiplied by years of continuous membership equals X. Calculate X for every member. The top 10,000 are in Priority 1 and the rest are in Priority 2. General public can still GAGF.

Today's covid 0 was the 19th consecutive 0 . Some people are trying to say by Friday's announcement it will be 23rd day and that will magically mean thousands of extra tickets will be released. It wont happen. The AFL have said no more tickets before Thursday.

If they do release them on Friday I will call every talk back radio program - current affairs and sports ones - and say we have a pemier, a CMO and chief copper who have sh*t for brains who have stuffed around thousands and are making illogical ad hoc decisons - and ask others to ring in if they agree that the 3 amigos have sh*t for brains and to let them know we aren't happy.

If we win on Friday night then the PF tickets will go on sale on Monday 6th September. On Saturday night 4th when the 2 SF winners are known, then that will be day 31 of consecutive 0's if there is no outbreak. Will that be enough to convince the 3 Amigos to allow 30k or 40k or will they say oh only 18,328 is a safe number to stop us catching the virus?

Bang on. We are well past a full cycle of infection with no cases so what rationale would there be to make change? Same with the requirement to wear masks in indoor public spaces. Neither are changing until vaccination levels are at targeted numbers.

I'm not going to argue if its right or wrong, but its clear from reading/hearing the commentary, they arent so much worried about whats in the State right now, but they are worried that they cannot contain it coming across the border frm the East. So their argument probably is, given we know its going to sneak in across the border, the more we can do now, the less impact its going to have before its detected.

Seriously, is that what the world is coming to

Let me off pls
I guess we just do what we have to and hope it all ends up being worth it, but this sort of thing, and just seeing everyone having to wear masks everywhere, so no friendly smiles and expressions, makes me sad.

The obvious solution. Some 1870/BD/Platinum won’t be able to go (interstate, overseas, etc), so that as priority 1 would give just about all of those who want to go the chance to. Then if by some chance they aren’t all taken up the Gold/Silvers would eagerly snap up the small amount left. General public (/ 3-game) shouldn’t be getting a look in.

No perfect solution whichever way you try and skin it. 30,000+ members with access rights trying to go into 10,000 odd was always going to leave more members disappointed than not.

You could sum total dollars of membership spent over the last 10 years and still not be fair. E.g. over last 10 years my lad was on a junior membership now concession (unreserved Western Stand with granny rights, assuming that's lower than platinum) but spends plenty on merch. Should he miss out to someone who's got a higher membership but only for 3 years. Probably but he'd still be p!ssed.

The whole BD /1870 not given higher priority access to their usual seats doesn't sit right with me either. Personally would have preferred that all bays are only allocated to membership that qualify (e.g. we could only buy in Western stand). At least that way if you missed, you missed to someone on the same membership level.
Others could argue your membership gives you access to those seats for 11 minor rounds and if someone wants to upgrade to cat1 for the finals then they should have the right. Allowing this could also lead to future upgrades, obviously others might also consider downgrading because of it.

Either way it blows, up to the club now to work out how to cover the gap.

Does anyone know what the NSW and Vic clubs offered their members back? Would suck to be a long suffer Melbourne supporter, first the snow fields and now not be able to go to any final matches.

So at last week's Crom game there were 15k allowed with no top tier Riverbank or Hill

So that's 15,000 out of a possible approx 40,000 available seats - 37.5%

This week it's 15,000 out of a possible 50,000 available seats - 30% - with the whole top tier of the Riverbank open

Following this logic and maintaining the exact same density we should really have at least 19k or 20k in attendance

Completely illogical to maintain the 15k

This is just SA Health grandstanding
People see through this crappola and are rightly peeved

Letting Marshall know that the inconsistent policing is losing votes is the only way this will change
The media are starting to turn up the heat regarding this and about time

Footy aside, the next 6 months will likely be the most interesting in most of our lifetimes
Buckle up it's gonna be a bumpy ride

I agree that there’s no perfect formula but there are definitely fairer ways of doing it than what they went with.

Agree but we're talking AFL.

Fair, level, even, consistent, etc. I don't believe any of these words come up. So I don't expect anything from them.

From what the club could have controlled sounds like most are saying it would have been fairer if they pushed GA/ 3 game members out of the equation.

BD/1870 and platinum in Priority 1
Gold and silver Priority 2

Leaving GA to try their luck with the general public knowing full well all tickets would have gone most likely in Priority 1 anyway.

Interesting to see what feedback they take on for the next home final.
