Just looking at potential end of season list changes and it's getting particularly competitive for spots with Kennedy, Owies and Cottrell performing above expectations this year. My current thinking is that:

Definite retirements
- Murphy
- Casboult
Likely retirement
- Betts (r)
Likely delist
-
Parks (r)
- McDonald (r)
Trade Bait
-
O'Brien
- Gibbons
- SPS
- Setterfield
No idea
- Boyd (r)

It will be interesting to see if the list sizes stay the same going into next year, it would be handy to have a couple more spots added. I don't think we'll make many changes, getting someone like McStay or Lobb to take Levi's spot would be great. Taking someone like Gibcus in the first round to have a developing key defender would also be handy.

Why would you delist Parks?

Done well for a rookie

Agreed. Definitely re-rookie. Will be interesting to see him when he has another full preaseason. Lacks an AFL body for now and could be fantastic with more strength/ power.

Midfield starting to look stronger. Cripps & Walsh are stars, Curnow a work horse, Dow & Kennedy showing good signs as well as Fish. Just need Setters, SPS & LOB to show a similar work ethic and application to provide more depth.

The longer the season goes on, the more I think we should retire off all the old blokes except Jones.
Their bodies breaking down on them anyway so it will simply be a natural case of retiring for most of them.
Even though Eddie Betts playing well, would only take one more calf injury for his body to alert him, enough is enough.
Murphy must be sick and tired of his ankles and feet giving him issues so cannot see him going on.
Jones is not old enough to retire and we not developed enough key defenders to even consider it yet.
Levi will retire soon unless he got a contract beyond this season.
No way he going to be picked when De Koning, Pittonet and Mirkov all fit and McKay, Charlie and Jack controlling the forward line. He will read writing on wall and know time is up himself.
I cannot really think of any older players apart from those guys.

Couldn't help yourself there, could you you?

3rd for pressure acts with 21 (team average was 12.1). Of the players you mentioned, only Walsh had more with 26. Fisher 15, Curnow 11, Dow 6.
4th for tackles with 4 (team average was 1.9). Behind Kennedy (7) & Walsh (5) but ahead of Fisher (3), Dow (0) & Curnow (0).

3 of the players didn't even play and Curnow isn't even really playing midfield anymore, which for mine is part of why we're seeing improvement in that area.

Is Parks on rookie list? I thought he was on primary list.
Whatever list he on, you do not de-list after one season.

Ed Curnow, Newnes, Newman
Ed is only old one. Newman is probably 26 or 27 at most, that not old and Newnes is just a fringe player anyway and my guess 28. Hopefully they just use him as depth in future and plays in magoos with Ed captain. Ed can captain reserves and stay on list another year or maybe even two, via rookie list. Is Ed over 30 yet? If he is, he not an old 30, he is fit as all **** so whatever he doing he going to pay footy for a few more years even if not senior level all the time.

I agree that he's done reasonably well and shown a bit for a first year player. I just feel like he might be one of those unlucky guys who gets squeezed as he doesn't quite fit the list need. He didn't appear to be tall enough to play KPP or effectively play as the intercept marker and I don't think he'd get a spot as a medium defender ahead of the likes of Saad, Williams, Newman, Docherty, Williamson who all offer that playmaking skill set. I wouldn't be disappointed if he got another year, I just think he might get squeezed.

As I said midfield is improving and if others step up we will be even stronger

Newman & Newnes are both 28 & Ed turns 32 later this year.

According to footywire the following are OOC at end of season.

Kemp - Would offer him a 2-3 year deal.
Betts - Had my doubts, but has proved me wrong, would love to have had a kid take his place by now but it hasnt happened.. Happy for him to go around again.
Ed Curnow - Would give him 1 more year, but let him know he is likely to spend a chunk of time playing in the 2s.
Newnes - here nor there, happy to keep around if he is prepared to play for fa.
JSOS - Give him 3 years, he deserves it.
Honey - 1 year, although he may look for an opportunity elsewhere.
Fogarty - 1 year
Casboult - Unless we can attract another ruck/fwd (mabior Chol, Ratogolea) then we may be forced to keep Levi around for another year.
LOB - delisted
Parks - 1 year
Murphy - retired with fanfare
Pittonet - 2 years.
Cotterell - I have seen enough and happy for him to go, but something DT likes about him prob get a 3 year deal.
Owies - Give him 2 years
Kennedy - 2 years, performance based contract.
Gibbons - 1 year
Newman - here nor there..
OMc - see whathis body is like, happy for him to stick around for another year on minimum chips as insurance.
SPS - 2 year extension, less money than he was on, happy to accept trade offers.
Ramsay - 1 year extension.
Setterfield - Trade bait, but would be selling when price is low.. If no offers may as well keep him around a midfield depth for another year.

21 players out of contract.. Murphy retires, Betts and Levi likely to retire. LOB delisted, Setterfield and SPS traded.. That's 6 players which is a good change to our list, allows us 4 draft picks and 2 x free agents.

fu**, Ed, you old f***er. Get the walking stick out.
Ok, So Ed is genuinely one of the old blokes.
Just order more Horlicks for him after training sessions.

Reckon the young guys trying to keep up with Ed would be the ones needing help after training sessions....

you forgot Cam Polson - a 3 year deal out of obscurity

We have 45 on our list including Owies who will need to be on our main list next year. List sizes are most probably still going to be 42.

You'd expect 3 ND picks, 1 RD and maybe trade/free agent 1 player.

We will need to delist/trade a minimum of 8 players. My tip would be Murphy, Casboult, Betts, McDonald, Newnes, O'Brien, Gibbons and Boyd. I'd prefer to keep 2 of them and trade Setterfield and McGovern for what ever you can get. Pay some of their wages if you have to.

Chol would be ideal in almost every way.

Second ruck who can play forward or back as required. Capable of holding down the ruck spot for a whole game if required. Athletic traits would make him a massive headache for opposition sides already trying to contain Harry and Charlie.

24yo - the bulk of his development is done and he's got a good 6-8 years of his best football ahead of him.

Durable, pretty sure he's been mostly injury free for his career to date. Certainly nothing recent.

Unrestricted free agent, so leaves our draft picks free to keep building layers underneath the current crop.

Not going to command a huge salary. Don't have to offer stupid money to prevent a matched bid, so it's just a matter of convincing him we're his best destination and then negotiating an agreeable contract.

Just seems to tick all the boxes. Sure, it would be great if he was a more "dominant" player. But if that were the case he'd cost more and be harder to get. Smart pickup if we can pull it off.

I'd still take Chol

Not for mine. Inconsistent more poor/average games than imposing himself. Will be 25yo at the start of ‘22. Never
been considered a chance of being the no. 1 man. Nankervis, Soldo, CCJ, Ryan all ahead of him as rucks. Not an intelligent or even instinctive player. We should be looking at either someone capable of being no. 1 ruck with some forward creds or ideally a big, smart forward able to do decent ruck minutes.

There will be plenty of suitors and someone will overpay. We already have some big contracts to juggle, don’t want a big expenditure on someone not unlike Levi. If Harry, Charlie and OMac finish the season healthy, with JSOS, Kemp and dare I say McGovern in the mix, I would be heading to the draft.

I am absolutely convinced Teague regards Pitto as his no. 1 ruck and would play TDK forward 70/30 if he keeps the gig.
