**** is my second language.
Gutted. Yet so proud.
Too many tightened up. That’s just the fact of it. And that’s finals for you.
They didn’t walk the ball out of defence. So it’s not on Bell or Wicks, as frustrating as their misses were.
O’Riordan was horribly fumbly in the second as too was Melican indecisive (punching when he should have marked). And our forward entries were awful. Both lifted to their credit.
McLean tried but we’d have been better with Reid’s smarts. Warner had a stinker and really they might have been better with Fox as the half forward. But I’m dirtier on Florent than I am on Warner because he has more experience. We really needed more poise from him.
We were just too tight. Hopefully the experience will make us better.
You're being very, very kind to McLean to have him as one of our best.I felt we lost it three areas tonight:
1. We were far too lose in our D50. McCartin handled the tall ball, but Melican clearly was outclassed by Hogan. The defensive stoppages were woeful (again) with not enough win on the inside or protection on the outside. Warner got caught a few times being sucked in and not playing tight. GWS did a good job nullifying Lloyd for our post-scrabble outlet. At the end of the day, that 2nd quarter defensive laps cost us an extra 3 goals.
2. We didn’t take our chances. There were some late howlers from Bell and Hayward here, but let’s not forget Papley burned quite a few early too. F50 entries were possibly as sloppy as I’ve seen this year and it seemed we couldn’t create any space. Forwards were running into each other’s territory and it looked generally uncoordinated. Irrespective, that was our game to win, but we blew our lines, through a lack of composure.
3. I think we all realise that we were undermanned tonight. Bell, Melican, COR are probably out of there depth at this level. Warner was not tuned or battle ready (as could have been said of Campbell and Stephens). That’s enough critical mass which any team will struggle carrying. I’m not sure why Fox is on the outer, but the coaching panel will have their reasons.
McCartin
Heeney
McLean
Parker
Hickey
Hewett
can all be proud of their effort today.
4/10 tonight, 9/10 for the year. There should be enough post-game rage and regret to fuel next year, but I’m really worried about our back line.
People on here the last few weeks were making out like The Chad was the saviour of the human race. Our fringe players - Melican, Wicks, Warner, O’Riordan, Bell - were completely exposed.
Good choice to interview Cogs after his BOG performance - 11 possessions at 45%.
Said it earlier. He is Craig BirdI’ll go against the tide on Hewett, happy to stand alone.
With Mills and Kennedy out it was a chance for Hewett to stand up. Now I think he was good for most part save a quarter or so, had a dip as the tackle count showed and he won some clearances. But I just feel like whilst he had a go, 19 disposals as the second best mid (behind Parker) doesn’t really cut it, particularly with the other two out. I think we needed more than that from him today.
He is a good 3rd to 4th mid but he isn’t going to lead us out in my mind…
Well sometimes the stats don’t tell the story. GWS were a swarm that never allowed us a clean possession and totally put us off our game.We had 40 inside 50s to 25 to half time. GWS couldn't miss in the first half. I mean that's good football in terms of taking their chances but we dominated general play. I'm sure the Swans of old have won plenty of games in opposite circumstances but going into half time 4 goals down in this game was not reflective of the performance of both sides.

Respectfully disagree. That was a game that got away.Well sometimes the stats don’t tell the story. GWS were a swarm that never allowed us a clean possession and totally put us off our game.
Don’t get me wrong, I hate the turds, but they were clearly the better team for most of the day.
They set up well defensively. That's all it was. They're average when it comes to moving the footy. Time after time they chopped off our inside 50 entries because they lead our forwards to the ball. And with us being defensively inept, it gave them a chance. And they took it.Well sometimes the stats don’t tell the story. GWS were a swarm that never allowed us a clean possession and totally put us off our game.

Lachie Ash and Matt de Boer executed their assignments on Dawson and Lloyd beautifully. Dawson never got into the game and Lloyd's influence was sorely missed in the second quarter.Well sometimes the stats don’t tell the story. Our forwards got caught behind their direct defender too many times. It was a poor forward performance as much as it was a solid defensive performance by them.In the 1st half we kept kicking long & deep into our fwd 50 which played into gws hands as Taylor etc either marked or easily spoiled. This was a coaching direction which our coaches got wrong.
We shouldve looked for short 1v1 targets & leads. That's where we lost it.
This would've been an easy 4+ goal win if we didn't have such poor i50 entries. It sucks more knowing that we should've won, they didn't beat us we just beat ourselves.

Horse has done a great job with the team this year but he failed tonight
They play us like fiddle every time in that sense. It's their trump card.Thank you glad someone mentioned it. We always struggle against their defence. They seem to always be content to let one of our forwards off the chain but then clamp down on all the others. I lost count of how many times Dawson - who is usually our best deliverer inside 50 - was kicking to leading forwards who were behind their men.
